Calidoscopio always ran the most amazing races. He seemed to relish laying back a mile or three and then lighting the jets to win. This one was a really great example.

Invisible Ink was one of them. He placed second in the 2001 Kentucky Derby. That was the second fastest Kentucky Derby in history. Invisible Ink went off at 55-1 odds....He was the longest shot in the race. John Fort, who owned "Inky," saved Invisible Ink's life. You should see "Inky" standing in the gate. He's got his head up like a King. Love does wonders, including boosting self-esteem. Animals (and people) need someone who believes in them.

The only similar late finisher I know of is Winx, but even she has not been quite as far back as Calidoscopio was (albeit over a shorter distance). Phenomenal finishing burst, even more so in the last 100 metres or so. As for age, I saw Great Sensation win his third Wellington Cup (2 miles) in January 1963 at the age of 10. In the case of Calidoscopio, it was unusual for an entire to be racing at such an age; Great Sensation was a gelding. (Incidentally, the delayed to 2018 Welsh Grand National was dominated by two 13 year-old geldings, the winner ridden by a 16 year-old jockey!)

3:35 Calidoscopio really doesn't like being led by the outrider and several times tries to bite his pony. Completely unnecessary yanking by the outrider, and Calidoscopio is perfectly happy when left alone. He seems to like the interviewer's pony, though, perhaps a mare ;-)

"The face" is actually almost as worth seeing as the race. And this was an incredible race by a great closer and ten year old colt. He is now down in Argentina standing stud along side his sire.

Why can't we have more races run at the traditional "cup race" distances? You will hear the old and tired "mere plodder" label attached to them. Folks yopu also get horses like this old veteran! Our TB breed would be much better off if races existed for the horses who can run forever! That goes for both racing and breeding!

Yes, this shortening of races is disappointing. Still, the distances and weights of National Hunt jump races are so much greater, yet this year (Jan. 2018) the nearly 3 and 3/4 mile Welsh Grand National had the oldest horses in the race (13 years) come first and second, the winner Raz de Maree carrying 150 lbs. (68 kg). These horses race for many years, despite the very dangerous nature of steeplechases in particular.
