California is all about the climate and location. It's that sweet spot on the west coast, especially SoCal. We might have an earthquake every so often but for the most part we don't have to buckle down for crazy weather and then pick up the pieces afterwards like other places do. This is one of the reason it's so expensive to live out here but people will pay for it. Seeing supercars/hypercars just about everyday on the freeways here proves that.
@philspaghet Жыл бұрын
As a Californian, I think the mass appeal is the weather, roads, and scene. California easily has the most diverse car scene in the US. BUT the laws and regulations make it way more difficult to live here. Basically every car guy in California is breaking some law of some kind. But there is some fun in avoiding the cops because the reward is being able to enjoy the greatest driving roads and greatest weather the US has to offer. That said... I'm moving out of this hellhole lol.
@flyingphoenix113 Жыл бұрын
I've had the chance to experience car culture in a variety of states, and California is by far the weirdest. You have an incredibly passionate car community, an abundance of race tracks, incredible twisty roads, phenomenal weather, and truly mind-blowing cars. A lot of people (as this video showed) are willing to do whatever it takes to get around California's absurd legal nonsense. That said, states like Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida are the future of the car hobby in the US, particularly modded cars. You can always visit California, but living in hell is not advisable.

The rules are absolutely absurd, I agree. However, videos like this and others just blow it out of proportion of how bad it is. It's not a life changing problem like many of you like to believe, it's a once every 2 years problem and some counties don't even have the problem Besides, many other states have emissions checks, not just California so why do all these car guys always get worked up on California And out of the states you named, only Texas or Florida would even be viable as a moving destination and that's only because of costs...especially if you want to compare car communities lmaoooo
@joshuaho3150 Жыл бұрын
CA is only weird by the standards of the US. Go to any other country and CA is remarkably lax. The UK/French MOT, German/Swiss/etc TUV, Japanese Shaken, and all other flavors of vehicle inspection are far, far more stringent. Even within the US CA is very lax compared to other states on many things. No enforcement or testing of headlight aim unless a police officer pulls you over for it. Exhaust noise tickets are "fix-it" tickets that are back to being trivial annoyances. Absolutely zero road safety inspection for rust, brakes, or anything like that unlike just about every salt state. The only thing that is remotely enforced is emissions and if you can't be bothered to care about that for your neighbors and people behind you in traffic you are part of the problem.

California car culture is very strong and goes way back. Many major car trends like hot rodding and lowriding started here in California. One thing I don't think he ever dove into was why we have smog laws here in the first place. So many Gen X and older Millennials have respiratory issues because of how bad the air was here. Most of the greater Los Angeles area sits in a basin. Even in the 90s, you couldn't see the mountains even though they're less than 30 miles away from most places down here because of how much smog was just hanging out in the air here. So while they seem dumb to a lot of people, it really was for health reasons. And everything got hit; passenger cars, big rigs, boats, planes, everything. If you look at photos of the downtown LA skyline today compared to the 1990s, you'll see a massive difference because of these laws. That being said, people here are always going to find ways around them. I personally don't care about people having a high flow exhaust system. But we have too many people running around with no emissions equipment at all making it harder for everyone else. Forgot to add that California has more vehicles registered with the DMV than like 10 combined states have people living in them. Like it or not, California sets the standard. And everyone likes breathing fresh air.

We are very silly indeed. The main reason I stay here is because we have literally hundreds, if not thousands of miles of amazing mountain roads. As a Northern Californian, the Touge/Canyon scene is very popular up here (and also in Southern California) which is all about lightness and handling over straight line speed. Basically all the fastest drivers I know have stock engine miatas, brz/86's or E36's and they would gap basically anyone (including me) on a twisty road. Here's an example of a local driver in his 170whp E36 323iS doing absolutely ridiculous speeds: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3nRo316dthqa7s I totally understand all the issues with California and have no problem with people not wanting to live here, so it just depends on what type of driving you like and how much you like modifying your engine. I also respect all my friends who do drive very illegal cars that are dope as hell, but it's just not for me, cause I prefer seat time, twisty roads, and race tracks over having a fast car that can go in a straight line that also breaks all the time
@Icecoldyoungster Жыл бұрын

The weather and twisty roads are worth it tbh. Plus the used car market is god tier. Most cars are rust free and there’s a ton of everything like American, euro, Japanese, etc. The community is massive as well. 34 million people means a lot of enthusiasts in your local area. You’re easily going to find people with similar interests or niches in your area. There’s always something going on and new people you’ve never met. Plus there’s a decent amount of racetracks near the metropolitan areas. Overall, great state to be a car enthusiast with bad legislation on cars. Luckily, being too broke to modify the power train on my NA Miata means I still pass smog no issues and get to enjoy the twisty canyon roads.

There are just miles and miles of smoothly paved mountain roads. You have multiple race tracks, and so many people own cars there that its not hard whatsoever to find a fun car on the market because they are everywhere. There was almost never a day where someone else would ask me about my car. Almost every night there was a car meet somewhere and every weekend there was a cars and coffee. Some of my best memories are driving up mountain roads 15 mins from where I lived and driving to get boba some random nights just to end up in a car meet with a full lot lol.

The aftermarket is not very good but it drives halfway decent for what it is and how inexpensive it costs. I did a few autocross events and I did very well with it but it is not worth modifying. Maybe some lowering springs, wheels and tires and that’s it. Not worth throwing too much money at something that will never be fast no matter what you do.

How to pass smog without a working cat sensor: clear the obdii of any codes. Drive the car roughly 20 min until all sensors turn on and register. The cat sensor is usually the last to turn on. Smog the car with all the sensors giving feed back except the cat sensor. Usually you are able to pass smog because all readings are in compliance and the engine light isn’t on even though the cat sensor hasn’t given any errors since it registered last

one thing is, Norcal seems to be even chiller than socal as far as having any problems with cops. I personally just focus on suspension/handling and carb legal engine mods, or things that are basically impossible to spot without deep knowledge. if the smog tech doesn’t notice it during a visual, a cop surely won’t if they pop your hood. i’ve been pulled over like 10 times up here in my life, and every time was for speeding no more than 30 over, never had my hood popped, and gotten off with warnings like 7 times.

Scion lovers are fueled by the haters! BTW, Alex your both wrong. xC isn’t a thing. Scion xA and xB were the first two models, in 2004. The tC was introduced a year later. Californians are car people in spite of regulations. The question could be posed similarly to the jdm culture in Japan!

What did a 300zx do if it was a z31 fair from what I’ve heard they’re 240s that are harder to find stuff for and sit on Jack stands permanently
