California cut valleys make for a great closed cut valley, however we have an installation trick to improve performance in areas of high winds, snow or rain. In addition, this installation tip will improve the performance of roof installers.
Please check with local code and the manufacturer to make sure that it meets their requirements. We know for certain that it will pass our local code and that Certainteed, OC and GAF allow for the installation of this valley, however you must not install on a slope less than 4/12 for GAF installs. Please consult with your manufacturers representative before installing this valley.

So I've been doing California valleys for years, also on the backside there is a tar line already so it's not necessary to apply caulk down unless your just being over protective, which is ok,not only is it a good idea to do these valleys this way,you do not have to pop a line later and then cut so your valleys come out straight, also it keeps the nails out of the valley itself which is a common mistake,I own over the top roofing here in midland Michigan and these valley's work excellent in colder climates as well.

a no cut valley,we do the same thing in Indy. guage 2 fingers on top 3 on the bottom. the shingles that are ran up first will seal to the other shingles. you don't have to seal unless you want to.works either way.

Great system. Here in florida the inspectors will not pass you if you do not have roofing cement under valley shingles. Great system. All my years in roofing from what I have seen on roof is the majority of roofs started leaking on valleys that didn't have roofing Cement under the shingles. Water shield or not.

Update (3 years after this video was made): Read the Owens Corning Technical bulletin April 3, 2020 regarding California Valley's. States if roofing cement is applied, it must be located at or above the nail line of the bleeder. My guess is that it has to do with water diversion - if the cement is too close to the valley it might divert the water under the shingles. I plan to add a single straight solid 3/8" line of cement on top of the nail line of tar or no extra cement at all.

Brian, thank you for your input. The biggest thing that installers overlook is applying a wide bead of tar in the valley, without the plastic cement on the vertical valley shingle the field shingles in the valley may blow off in high winds. We had 90 mph winds for 8 hours earlier this year and many valley shingles blew off the roofs that other contractors installed. We did not have any shingles that blew off. The modified installation is necessary for longevity.

Appreciate the information. We are a family owned Roofing Company in our local area for the pass 40 years. We also have several relatives in the local construction industry, my brother worked at ABC supply Tulsa for 16 or more years, and Gulf Eagle. My father who started us in 1979 was one of the first roof loaders in the area loading roofs for local lumber stores and couple shingle suppliers back in the early 80’s. My other brother runs our Siding, Insulation, and Seamless guttering side. We are all very passionate about what we do an have learned to enjoy what we do by watching our dad. I thought ur video was excellent, it’s always good to meet other individuals that share the roofing trade. Please keep posting.!! If your ever in the area lunch is on us! Thanks again! BFuller

I almost have to call BS on this. It would probably be okay doing it that way, and I understand why you do. But, in my neck of the woods, where triple-digit inches of rain is not uncommon, all it would take is one keyway in that bleeder strip being exposed to have a flood of water backed up behind all of that cement not able to get back into the valley where it belongs. Just my two cents. But if it works for you and you don't get call backs, then I guess I should shut my trap :-)

Can a valley be woven when there are two different pitched roofs meeting in the valley? I started trying to do this, but then began to realize that I was climbing fast up to the ridge on one roof, but was far away from the ridge on the other roof, and the ridges met at the top. I can't see this in my mind. I can't visualize it working. I don't know what would happen much further up if I was to continue. Can anyone help answer this? I just don't get it. The lesser pitched roof is a dormer.

Roy, thank you for your response, however this is how we install shingles and we don't have any issues. Earlier this year we had 100 mph winds and we did not lose any shingles in the valleys. Many other roofs that we inspected and repaired lost shingles because they did not modify their installations. We expect the unexpected and build the roofs to last. This is the best way to install the valley shingles to prevent loss of shingles in high winds.

The roof looks really nice great job other than the way he nails. All he needs to do is 1 nails in total to set the shingle because when he shingles away from the valley the shingle on top the nails from that shingle will set that shingle under perfectly with less nails in the valley and use roof cement in between each layer and dont be greedy with the roof cement eitherput 2 line in between each layer at that. Everyone is so quick to talk shit give rhe guy credit it does look good just give the guy some pointers instead of trash talking his roof and im sure his roof will not leak even though he's shingling between the nails in the Valley area everybody's so quick to get nervous with the valley I don't give a s*** what anyone says I didn't study loose 8 years and I guarantee I'm just as good as any veteran doing it for 20 years because I do study rooms I'm just as good as any veteran doing it for 20 years because I do study roofs I study different styles different in different ways and I like learning from experienced roofers that's the way to learn and it makes you even better I know a lot of 20 year roofer and roofers who have been doing it for 40 years and honestly roofers that been doing it for 20 years in longer actually suck because they've been doing it one way for that long when there are lots of different ways of doing roof now there's all kinds of materials have gotten much better in time and that technology with modern underlay prevent the roof from leaking even better the only thing a roofer it with over 20 years experience is good for is that they're quick that's it and I've actually beaten some 20-year roofers with speed and also a lot of Latinos that do roofs they learn it from a person and then they don't change up this style most of them are set in one way of doing it that is true they think the way they were taught is the only way LMAO and one last thing the guy obviously looks experienced in the video do you really think if his roof leak that he still have a job so obviously his roofs are not leaking don't you think the owner would have fired him by now now I think my comments how much better than any one on here I'm giving that guy compliment and giving him advice that's what people should be doing apparently you're on here to learn something the problem is a lot of vets don't want to teach no one cuz they're worried about losing their jobs to someone younger faster and more talented people that do roofs wherever you want in the video good job just be cautious that you're in the Valley that's all

Ice and water is installed in our valley systems, whether they are open or closed valleys ice and water shield is installed first. I would highly recommend installing plastic cement in the California cut valley system. Every year we experience days where we have sustained winds over 60 mph and this year we had sustained winds of 90 mph during the course of a day. Many contractors experienced a great loss, however we build our roofs for the unexpected. My fellow roofing contractors who go the extra mile do not experience a significant loss when the unexpected happens. I know it seems like over kill, but our clients are worth it, therefore we go the extra mile.

In florida we tar everything up the valley ridge ends down the rake along the eave around the penetrations, under and ontop flashings an just about anywhere else you might see a possibility of a leak. We have several different types of tar to include flashing cement specifically for adherence to metal, we have siliconized tar to prevent cracking we have tar that can be applied in the rain an stick! There's modified for coating membrane an your all around general purpose bull. I love it when you northerners come down south an tell us " A good roofer doesn't need tar". As we go about repairing your leaks. Cause you see we get some pretty wet seasons an the goblet raindrops often come down sideways in a hurricane force wind blown showers.

Thank you for your comment. From the centerline our nails our 6" from the center of the valley. This meets code requirements and all manufacturers installation requirements. In addition, shingles will blow off if they are not nailed properly. The 2" offset is critical. Once you have a 2" offset and you nail the shingle properly you will not have any leaks nor will shingles blow off in the valleys in high winds.

Installed properly with a coating of tar up valley at bottom edge of shingle to prevent wind uplift an water undertow. Does not need to be nailed when set in tar .and starter course shingle running up valley should be overlapping the next shingle creating a back lap.this way water running down the opposing valley side pushing up onto and down shingle will always be pushed out ontop of underlying shingle..to quote bruce lee.."think like water...be water my friend"

Hello Tommy, thanks for your reply. Installation instructions are to keep nails 6" from the center of the valley. At 16" shingles will blow off.

tabs running perpendicular to the flow of water in a valley is a shortcut to save labor, and not an acceptable method recommended by any shingle manufacturer. A proper valley using steel should always be the standard, and a closed valley is an option where the homeowner wishes to save money but at the expense of quality, which should be explained to them.

I bet nobody uses metal valley. It will last way longer, but then you won't get to repair it in 7 or so years.

The nails are not being set properly when fired that fast. Any angled nails will leak. This system is a complete joke in an area that has snow load. Only 26 gauge "W" valley metal should be used. Period. That nailing is a 100% fail.

Thank you for your feedback. Many manufacturers do not allow laminated shingles to be woven if they are part of their contractor programs and give extended warranties. In addition, many building code jurisdictions disallow woven valleys,
