Good video but not sure about the wisdom of nailing through the flashing. Can you just rely on the shingle caulk? Also agree with other comments not to do continuous bead of caulk but inverted U

Do not run a solid line of caulking on your beauty strip. You want water to escape. Leave gaps every few inches, especially in colder climates with freezing and thawing cycles. Imagine water running off the sheathing under the siding, the. Hitting ice built up right at the angle change of the metal flashing, it could start running back up underneath the sheathing.

The presentation of "beauty shingles" is great but the demonstration of how to do it is absolutely 100% wrong in this video. Your video demonstrates the roofer putting a solid bead of roofing cement down to hold the shingles which in effect prevents water from escaping, which is the entire point of the flashing. The proper way to do this would be to do several beads of caulk in an upside down U formation with gaps between each upside down U bead formation so that water has a way of draining.

If condensation came down the wall on the vapor barrier and onto the flashing . The cement would trap the water under that top shingle. other than that it looks great.

When you nail the flashing, the water will enter underneath the top shingle and then finds its way to the house through those nail entries

I've always thought that headwall flashing works best with no nails going through the roof deck. They say not to depend on blackjack to hold water out but that's what's happening when you apply a beauty strip. I make sure to use a color that blends with roof and no dents or bends. I then install over the last row with a good bead of bj under the flashing. You can barely tell the metal is there unless your looking closely. Is this a bad practice? Is the beauty strip purely for looks I'm assuming? Id prefer function over aesthetics so long as it's not ugly

Beauty strip is only by opinion a needed thing, I learned a good trick from watching this video if I am ever asked to do one but personally I prefer the look of the counter flashing, almost like a trim piece.

Should caulk or cement every where you put a nail through that flashing though in my professional opinion. Water will find that in a powerful storm over time is why or even sooner with a good storm

If you have a three tab shingle forget the beauty strip. It is not Necessary.

I notice my GAF Timberline has pretty strong laminating glue, they call Duragrip. But you can heat up a knife with a torch and separate the tab to put a nail, better than damaging the shingle.

So if water was blown up towards the siding and dripped down on the flashing, that water would puddle up behind the row of sealant...wouldn't it? The whole point of the flashing being over that single is for the water to drain out on top of the next row. I'm not a roofer so what the heck do I know.

You are right. You never want a solid strip of sealant like that. Although, I like the other attributes shown here. Quality control is tough when they don't do their own work. These are all subs.

sure will, and it will eventually dry off too. But water can grow mold and could freeze there. Just dont bother with the caulk, or use a dab every 6 inches. I just think it is a waste of caulk doing this. This roofer is likely worried the beauty shingle will fly off in a wind and he will be blamed.

Water needs to run down the flashing, not be stopped and backed up because it a thick bead of roofing cement under the shingle is preventing it from flowing down.

I don't know too much about Roofing but the white trimming on top of the end wall flashing would be where the water is rolling off on top of the shingles passing over the cement..

The white trim is where the water should run in a perfect world, although if there is a failure above that point at say a window n water gets behind the siding on the house wrap it will be come out behind the trim on the flashing. That is when the bead of sealant would become a possible issue. Best practice would be 2inch strips with 2 inch spaces so water can escape

Just caulk nail heads on old flashing cut back to smaller exposer and bend custom beauty new flashing matching roof color over the ugly stuff, it's a way more professional looking job

Incorrect. A beauty strip is partially cosmetic as well as protection for the flashing and its nails. The flashing that it covers is used to create the protection needed at the wall abutment. Many roofers will cut corners and leave this flashing exposed nails included which can cause leaks and rusty nails. When done correctly, tar or roofing cement is then used in order to provide the best protection possible. These guys did a good job.

@@roberthazelton8824 Wall flashing should always be ontop of the last row of shingles. What do you think happens when water runs down the siding and behind the last course of shingles? It doesn't just disappear. It puddles behind that thick cement blob and sits there until the temptature drops to freezing and it forms into ice, and cracks the roofing cement, and continues to do so many, many times. Eventually it gets to the nail heads and causes a leak. I've seen this happen personally as I've been roofing for over 5 years now. Proper way is to install new wall flashing, a colour similar to the shingles but also compliments to siding colour. Overtop of the last course of shingles and tucked behind the siding. Then using neoprene washered screws to hold the wall flashing down if its a long piece. Could even go as far to mark where you're putting the screw then putting a small blob of caulking on the underside, then putting the screw directly through the cement from the top side. It's not cutting corners leaving the flashing exposed, it's the correct way to code. Now using nails isn't the best method as you'd be putting caulking on the nail heads that would need to be replaced every 1-5 years because the sun's uv rays will degrade the caulking causing it to crack.
