There are a lot of serious tactical considerations being overlooked by inept politicians and the Fire Chiefs they appoint at this point in time. How about a little more play-by-play from blue collar firefighters and retired Fire Chiefs that see fires through a different lens? I, myself, see many missed opportunities with respect to the way LAFD conducts structure protection. As a career firefighter and now retired Battalion Chief of 35 years OTJ, I am amazed by the inability of LAFD chiefs to direct their troops to stop the domino effect caused by what's known as Exposure Building Fires. The LA Fire Departments fleet of fire apparatus is well equipped with onboard firefighting foam tanks that extend the use of limited water supplies while providing superior exposure protection to prevent embers from igniting what buildings remain standing. I authored training on this very subject and its used in 26 States in the U.S. Using PFAS free structural firefighting foam should have been authorized by LA Fire Chief Crowley by now but all I see is plain water fire streams that result in 90% runoff and an UNTHINKABLE number of exposure building fires that are continuing to flatten what's left of LA. I'm not claiming to be a wildland "Fire Expert" by any stretch of the imagination, but once embers start occupied buildings on fire all I can say is: STEP INTO MY OFFICE!
