This is a beautiful drive, no doubt. But you expect it to be, and that takes some of the shine off. What I didn’t expect (I’m a Brit so only visit the USA every so often) was the I-70 through the San Raphael Swell. Now THAT was stunning!!!

Anyone looking to take this drive (after the road reopens from the latest landslides that is), driving South is nicer as you would be on the right side/ocean side and it's much easier/safer to use the scenic turnouts. If you do choose to do the Northbound drive, don't take the 101 up to the 46 to get to Highway 1 as shown in this video. Instead, just drive through San Luis Obispo, North on Santa Rosa Street which turns into Highway 1 after about 5 minutes. You will get to pass through the towns of Morro Bay and Cayucos, and be driving alongside the ocean about 40 minutes sooner than is shown in this video.

I have a couple of questions: 1.) Might you know the average speed you were driving ? and 2.) It seems very lightly traveled, especially going North. Wow, here I am in Australia watching roads I have driven on quite a few times. I was a bit confused at the start as I would have gone via Morro Bay, but Google maps helped me out. Last trip over there in 2019, we came down the 101 from SF and cut across on the 46 but turned off at Old Creek Rd (37.50 on your vid.) A bit twisty but a nice detour. I've done the coast trip 5 times and if we ver get back, it will be 6. Great video and I'm interested as to your camera?

Do all those eucalyptus trees in California remind you of Australia? We imported those trees from Australia to the U.S. many decades ago and it was a BIG mistake. Their wood is useless, the leaves are poisonous (which kills nearby vegetation), and they burn like motherfuckers when exposed to wildfires.

@@tacocruiser4238 First time I saw one was on Alcatraz and I didn't know about them being imported over there. I think they were used for railroad sleepers (ties). Yes, they do burn but they regrow and they aren't as bad as pine trees. We have also imported things which would have probably been better off left where they were, but that's history now.
