@@TheChickenRiceBowl: It's average for an apartment rental, but, the big deal here is student housing with all the foreign students, paying $400 a month for a room in a shared house or apartment. My second story apartment is 850 square feet with a big landing at the door. The last battle where pre-Canadians defeated Americans is where I live.

Lived in Los Altos and Santa Cruz 1966-2001. Left then because a One BR Apt in Sunnyvale and Belmont was $2800 month. I made $40k yr. So I moved into the Sierra's 50 miles east of Madera-Fresno area bought a house for $1400 month. Living in an armpit for $3k+ month is a grotesque value system.

Tons and tons and TONS of people are going to retire early if they can, or buy a place out in a rural place where they can work remotely and be at least partially self-sufficient, or will just not be able to rent or buy anywhere and will be homeless/hobos. This is going to make the 1930s look mild.

2:51 Income equality? It's not about income equality. It's someone living in a city that one cannot afford to live in! $3,200 for an apartment is insane. At that price point, I'd expect only the upper-middle class and wealthy people can do it. Living in a city like Galt or Lodi is doable on $3,200 a month. Not only will that pay for rent, it also pays for food, utilities, gas, with money left over for entertainment and savings.

What happened to the unemployment benefits with $600/wk federal assistance? And spending $3200/month on rent means you're not hurting. Makes as much sense as the Portland rioters.

Kakashi Hatake 👋🏼 I’m in Reno and a S.F. Capital partners co./ “developer” bought the “low income 84 units” where I live. Of course they raised the rent $100.00 right away and 3 months later another $150.00. 3 months later they began charging for “water $17.54, sewer $35.91 & garbage $25.78” plus monthly svc charge averaging $90.00 extra a month. It’s all leagal accept two thing’s, they charge a single person in a one bedroom the same specific utilities as two or more people in a one bedroom. Minimum wage in Nevada is 7.50 and hour. They brought many “illegals” from CA to work here in Nv...it kinda bugs me. Anyway, I’m am grateful to still have a home and always hope to.

IMO and I live here, in DT SF, after years of hard work and no kids, I can afford to buy here. If you can't afford a million dollar home, and private school for your children, your quality of life such as public schools, parks, commute, etc will be better somewhere else. I don't think it should be a question for people who weren't born and raised here. The answer should be no.

Honestly, with how overpriced that POS city is, why buy a house there for a million when you can buy 5 houses that are better than than POS in a different state and make more money! Heck, why not keep one for yourself. I think one day you will realize how much you threw away at a young age giving a lot up just to save for a house in SF, LOL

Galt and Lodi are a better option if you can't afford the Bay Area. Yes, you won't have stunning views but at least you can afford food, shelter, water, utilities, and gas for what it would cost for an apartment. People need to be honest with what they can afford.

I am damn lucky that my house was paid off a few months before my spouse died in 2018, and I was old enough for Social Security and was able to purchase into a pension from a department of my county. I still would like to be able to work occasionally for my local library system. With shelter in place still in effect, this is not possible. But there are hundreds of thousands in the San Francisco Bay area who are not lucky enough to live in homes they own.

A lot of landlords will default and lose their properties because of they aren't getting rent money. Ironically, that will reduce affordable housing because corporate landlords will buy up all of those foreclosed properties.
