Can you run an older Diesel Truck in California? This is a good question for anyone with a commercial vehicle going into the state and this video talks about the regulations that apply to older trucks. For more information, please call the CARB number at 866-634-3735.

Give an example how bad CARB is. Fire Fighters coming in from out of state we’re told that if there equipment didn’t meet CARB requirements they couldn’t use it. This was during the worst years 2017 and 2018. Entire towns were burned up into the air. But CARB didn’t care. I can only imagine how many structures and people were effected by it. Great channel!

What it's going to come down to is Cali legal truck will haul say refer "containers" to NV or AZ or OR and drop them at a transfer yard. You'all 49 state truckers pick them up there and continue on your merry way. The Cali legal truck will back haul the empties to the processing plants and do the cycle over again. Emissions trucks will get put in the shop every 100 hours or so for a tune-up and system check. Then back to the yard to work.

It's not just carb, it goes beyond air pollution. The reason California imposes these inane regulations on the trucking business, and all other businesses, is because California's policy makers are hormonally challenged. #LGBTQ. They think and feel differently. I say to all intelligent natural men and women, the more you think about this the more it makes sense. Indeed, this is the primary cause of everything that is wrong with California.

It's extremely hard to stay in bussines if your truck is 2007 and up. Those emmision systems are a real huge lose of money. You will actually run your truck just to cover the problems of those emmision systems. Also,those are not just expensive,those systems are impossible to maintain if the truck passes 500000 miles. I know many drivers who have been forced to delete the emmision systems because the couldn't work at all,their trucks were broken down all the time. The engineering have failed to provide reliable and affordable emmision systems for the semi trucks. That's the source of all the problems.

I couldn't agree more. I work for a truck training school and our old yard Freightliner (94) with a CAT engine (no DPF) runs like a champ everyday for hours on end without a hiccup. Our newer Freightiner with a Cummings ISX engine in it has cost us $13,000 so far this year in maintenance for the stupid DPF filter constantly getting plugged up and needing to be "serviced" ( and this is with a lot of highway driving). My only last question is I have seen a lot of CAT trucks (Dump Trucks, Tractors) on the road lately that look like either a rebadged Freightliner or International. Is this the case and it just has a CAT engine in it, or has cat thrown their hat back into the truck market?
@billyyoder8171
@billyyoder8171 7 жыл бұрын
Tim Acosta Hi Tim. the Cat CT660 and CT680 Vocational Trucks was Cat's failed venture of trying to get into the vocational truck market. They partnered with Navistar. It only lasted from about 2012 to 2016. Navistar built them for cat. Downfall was poor quality control, over priced, and only thing Caterpillar on the truck was the emblem and optional cat transmission. The engine was an International maxxforce painted yellow. I taught for Holt Caterpillar for seven years and learned how lacking and inaccurate the service info was and how overpriced the trucks parts were. Example, the simple "fuses" (actually circuit breakers and ptc smart fuses) had a mark up cost of approximately 600+%. They charged $30+ for the identical brand fuse you can buy online for $3-$5. Plus minimal support between Navistar and Cat made it difficult to get accurate information. From my own experience Pete and Cummins are still the best choice for Medium/Heavy trucks.

I don’t think CARB was made for anything except selling customers a new vehicle every 10 years after they cease production of parts required for vehicle maintenance. For example, i am unable to purchase the parts needed for my vehicle in CA and the car manufacture is sending me around on wild goose chases, hoping that I will give up and purchase a new vehicle. It seems extremely illegal to me and I’m sure people have lost their jobs and livelihood because of these regulations that make it outright impossible to get the correct parts for your car in CA.

Did Calif. take into account the environmental cost of all the engines that have to be replaced with engines that don't last half as long as the old version? Re-gen engines blow out raw diesel all over everything and are more frequently out if tune. And whats the environmental impact of recycling DPF canisters? Your just moving pollution from one area to another. And one more thing, If you get poorer fuel mileage your going backwards. They should increase the cafe standards, Less fuel burned is less emissions.

It really is, All those resources and engineering just to make a engine burn the fuel "cleaner" I don't care if its 0 emissions. The trucks with DPF's and EGR's get LESS than half the fuel economy and at least 3/4 the power. So your gases out the tail end are "cleaner" but you have to burn 2-3 times the fuel... which has to be refined, and so on. Making all those man hours engineering this junk null

As far as "Filth", a diesel engine would both take longer to kill you in terms of carbon monoxide, as well as produce far less overall. They run at a higher efficiency than gasoline engines. And as far as being obsolete, if they were obsolete, then why are they the backbone of any infrastructure that relies on the mass transportation of materials/goods? Trucks, Trains, and boats to name the biggest contributors.
@PistonAvatarGuy
@PistonAvatarGuy 7 жыл бұрын
How often do people get in a position where they can be harmed by the carbon monoxide emissions from any engine? Diesels produce more smog forming emissions, and that's harmful to everyone, all of the time. Modern "clean" diesels don't have lower CO2 emissions than comparable gasoline vehicles, they usually just break even, so the slightly better fuel efficiency of a diesel does nothing for it. Diesels are obsolete, but the market takes time to adopt new technologies. Series hybrids with turbine ICEs will replace diesels in most heavy equipment and heavy on-highway vehicles, and trains will likely be powered by something similar, or some kind of electric propulsion (like linear motors), or an OCS.

Natural gas might help. Especially in shipping as they're actually looking at ammonia as a fuel for medium-speed (typically 720/750 RPM and 500/600 RPM) and low-speed (under 300 RPM, like the large 2-strokes in container ships) Diesel engines. It would help reduce CO2 emissions by a lot. For example, if you used to run your engines off of pure crude oil, changing to 20% crude oil and 80% ammonia would cut CO2 emissions by at least 60%. That's a huge amount and would help ships be a lot greener. (And it would be another big breath of life for the internal combustion engine.)

@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify 2 жыл бұрын
@@electric7487 that is a legitimate concern, and the answer is situational. In a densely populated city more emissions control would be needed than in a rural area, because in a big city you expose more people and the noxious emissions are concentrated due to large numbers of vehicles operating close together. Gasoline vehicles have no excuse, modern fuel injection and catalytic converters are so good that there is essentially zero performance cost to emissions control, and the converters themselves are also pretty cheap ($200 or so for a 'performance' unit). Diesels have it harder. I think all diesels should at least run an oxidation catalyst (cheap, reliable, and at least cleans up the CO, HC and some soot) but the use of EGR, SCR and DPF systems clearly has a much greater cost. Generally they should be used in urban areas, but non urban operation could probably dispense with some of the NOx abatement (i.e. stop using EGR, which also makes the soot less of an issue) for greater reliability and fuel efficiency. At the moment we just have blanket regulations that lack the nuance to cover all these cases, so naturally the laws cause issues.
@electric7487
@electric7487 2 жыл бұрын
@@nerd1000ify The only emissions devices an on-highway Diesel needs are an oxidation catalyst followed by a DEF system. You just run extra boost to minimise the formation of PM, and then use the SCR to take care of the NOx output. DPF's are really unnecessary anymore, same with EGR, as modern SCR systems consistently demonstrate real-world efficiencies of 95% or better. Additionally, urea and ammonia are organic substances that are easy to mass-produce with environmentally-friendly means.
@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify 2 жыл бұрын
@@electric7487 there are some new injector designs that more or less eliminate PM, even at very high EGR ratios. So we might actually see a return to just a DOC and EGR. Thankfully with no PM production the inlet coking issue should be greatly reduced.

Hydrogen still has a long way to ho before it becomes practical for an on-highway Diesel engine. Although in the marine sector, they're looking into _ammonia_ as a fuel for Diesel engines, where a port injector sprays ammonia on the intake stroke and a direct injector injects HFO or Diesel at the top of the compression stroke.

Its not all bad if you already have a well maintained engine that ran good before the DPF retrofit. My 96' Pete still runs its original N14 with about 800K.....never much smoke to begin with and the turbo seals are good. Been running a passive, continuous regen DPF on it for about 5 years with zero problems. No loss of power, about the same noise, and the tailpipe is clean as a whistle. Mostly county highway and backroads, 7 days a week hauling heavy equipment(dozers, exes, lifts) so no pussy footing around here! Yea, it was 25K for the DPF and I still have to retire the old girl in 3-4 more years, but that retrofit gave me a solid deadline to work towards, and a good 8-9 years of working the old truck and saving up for a replacement. Now, we will see if Im singing the same tune when I out her replacement to work! Perpetual check engine light and seemingly no power, although it never really broke down on me. I have heard some horror stories from guys who suffered some big power losses on older trucks and/or ended up with blown engines some after putting on a DPF. I imagine it likely had more to do with what filter they bought and whether or not the trucks were taken care of.....that's why I'm glad I was/am a mechanic before I became a driver. Too many operators just keep on trucking with a smaller problem and it just spreads like cancer.

You do realise that engines with EGR systems and DPF's have consistenly shown to get WORSE fuel economy than older engines (that didn't have any of these things), right? Running an older engine or with deleted/disabled emissions equipment isn't about not respecting the environment, people do it because the older engines were a lot easier to work on and a lot more reliable. Newer engines with certain emissions items removed from it are more reliable than those with the systems installed. While your tailpipe emissions are cleaner, your fuel economy going down means more fuel has to be produced and transported, and a lot more energy has to be used to manufacture all of the emissions system components. Not only that, SCR canisters often have precious metals (although zeolites would solve this problem to an extent) that are very expensive to manufacture and replace. All you're doing is shifting the pollution from one place to another. DPF's also cost a lot to replace and a lot goes into making them as well. If I owned a Diesel, the reason I would delete some of the emissions equipment is so that I can do away with the astronomical costs associated with repairing them, not so that I can roll coal. Crack down on the people who roll coal, not on the people who delete in the first place.
@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify 2 жыл бұрын
@@electric7487 Moving the pollution somewhere else is to a certain extent the point of the endeavor. The problem with vehicle emissions is that vehicles tend to spend a lot of time around humans, who then breathe the emissions and (eventually) get sick as a result. All these pollution control systems are really meant to mitigate these health problems, either by eliminating the emissions or by displacing the emissions to somewhere fewer humans will be affected by them. Electric vehicles are the ultimate case of this, they move all the emissions to the power station (if it is fossil fueled) which is probably well outside city limits where the pollution will be less concentrated and fewer people are around to inhale it. The payoff is in healthcare costs; fewer people get asthma or lung cancer so your insurance premiums are lower.
@electric7487
@electric7487 2 жыл бұрын
@@nerd1000ify I'm looking at it from a diminishing returns point of view: At what point are the "health benefits" of these emission control systems getting outweighed by the problems they cause? My guess is that with the current on-highway emissions standards we've already gone way too far. I feel that the reduction in tailpipe emissions has become far too small compared to the problems that are popping up. For one, the fuel economy of newer trucks with DPF's are actually _worse_ than that of older trucks, as the DPF is quite a significant exhaust restriction. Which means you have to produce and transport more fuel, negating many of the environmental benefits. Is it really a big deal if trucks are allowed to blow a little bit more black smoke than they are now? Probably not. Add to that the fact that almost every manufacturer is having problems with the emissions systems breaking down constantly and being very costly to repair, being so bad in some cases that the EGR's and DPF's have brought thousands of one-truck owner operators to near bankruptcy. And what's the environmental impact of making and recycling DPF canisters? At least urea is renewable (as it is an organic substance) and can be produced with clean electricity. This is why, IMO, a truck with a low-smoke tune (that uses a large amount of excess air to minimise the formation of smoke), an SCR system to take care of NOx emissions, no EGR, and no DPF is ideal. The engine doesn't get choked down, but NOx and PM emissions are brought down. CO2 goes down as well since you're burning less fuel than if the vehicle had a DPF. You have to look at the situation as a whole, because if you regulate tailpipe emissions too tightly, you're shifting the emissions but not reducing them overall. That makes no sense. I'm not saying that we shouldn't have any emissions regulations; I'm saying that we need to roll back the ones for on-highway Diesel vehicles to a point where they can be met with no EGR and no DPF while still minimising pollution to people in the immediate vicinity. In crowded urban environments, a big issue is that catalytic converters haven't warmed up due to the frequent starting and stopping. Once we have a truly clean battery chemistry and generating our electricity via clean sources like nuclear, most people (who are not car enthusiasts) would be driving EV's for commuting, reducing pollution in the cities significantly, to a point where DPF's on Diesel vehicles may no longer be justified. Biodiesel and synthetic Diesel can be made to be much cleaner than petrodiesel, further reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions as long as the electricity used to make them is produced from nuclear, renewables, and clean fossil (if it can be done in a cost-effective manbner, which seems unlikely). To sum it all up, California's 2010+ engine mandate is extremely short-sighted and is one of many examples of California shoving their own problems up other people's asses.
@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify 2 жыл бұрын
@@electric7487 I think a big part of the problem is that diesel emissions control is actually really immature technology, at least compared to the catalytic converter on a gasoline engine. We're sort of in that '70s to '80s malaise era for diesels right now. I've got some experience of a particularly fraught example (Suzuki's implementation of a DPF on the Renault F9Q diesel- an unreliable engine to begin with, and then they added a first generation DPF...) so I'm familiar with how much of a pain the emissions control systems can be, especially when the mechanics don't tighten the hose clamps on the inlet pipes, and the engine thinks it's running leaner than it actually is! Currently I drive a 2014 diesel Hyundai that didn't come with a DPF to begin with (Australia's emissions laws are lax compared to most of the western world), and while I like the lack of emissions control issues I'm always a bit offended by the plume of black smoke I leave behind when driving up highway onramps. There's some great research going into trying to resolve all these problems with better injector designs, see Ducted Fuel Injection for an example. With some luck as technology improves the reliability will go up and emissions will go down, and of course we'll get the lost economy back.
