Andrew Tate should watch this movie. Caligula was a drama queen who had sex with all his sisters and raped a groom on his wedding bride, after raping his virgin bride. He also played a game of Caligula Says, and executed everyone who failed just to take their money (balance the books of Rome). The west isn't perfect, but at least our presidents can't order our arrests and steal our stuff.

Finally after a long wait! I got to see this masterpiece today and all I can say that it was worth the wait guys! No doubt the best version of Caligula that you will see and should of been the one and only cut released to the public! Bravo and kudos to everyone that was involved in the making of this Ultimate Cut! Fantastic stuff! Some years ago, I worked on a film with Malcolm McDowell in the cast. After lunch break, McDowell was late coming out of his trailer. Normally punctual, everyone waited patiently. When he finally did, the AD got on his bullhorn and announced "Ladies and gentlemen, Golden Globe nominee and star of the award-winning film "Caligula", Mr. Malcom McDowell is now on the set!" McDowell's face immediately went red. Unfortunately, I could not actually make out any of his curses over the applause except for "... son of a bitch...". Personally, as terrible as the film actually is, McDowell's performance is absolutely fantastic. I hope this cut can begin to do it some of the justice it deserves.

@@JoesephTechnicolor I'm sorry if you don't believe it is true. The film was Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius, which was released 20 years ago this year. The specific shooting location was the second day on the Bobby Jones golf course in Atlanta, where I lived at the time. McDowell played a famous Atlanta newspaper journalist. I played a number of different extra roles in the film, but was specifically a news photographer in that one. If I recall correctly, that setup only lasted about 30 minutes due to the threat of thunderstorms. Jim Caveziel, who played Jones, was trying to get some shots right (they were later simply made with CGI), and he quickly threw down his metal club at the first sight of lightening, and we headed indoors for a press conference scene. During the setup, the soft-spoken Caveziel, whose previous film was the popular Passion of the Christ, entertained us with stories of his unpleasant encounter with lightning while playing Jesus on the cross in that picture, hence him not wanting to tempt fate on an open golf course holding a metal stick. McDowell, though seemingly pleasant other than his fury at the aforementioned AD remark, did not spend any time on the set unnecessarily, generally choosing to avoid the oppressive Georgia humidity whenever possible. Indeed, I never saw him without an umbrella to avoid the sun unless the camera was actually rolling. I suspect that not a lot people on the set had actually seen Caligula, but enough people laughed out loud to suggest awareness, at least, of its infamy.

However, instead of expanding scenes with the new footage, the entire film was recut from scratch to create a unique version that doesn't contain a single frame from the original. This was done with the goal to be as close to Gore Vidal's original script as possible. Great care has been taken to select alternate footage to not only change the tone of certain scenes, but also to honour the instincts of the actors. Additonally, visual effects were used to enhance scenes and to replace the cheap sets and backgrounds. AI technology was used to restore dialogue performances that were previously unusable, since they were plagued with background noises. A new music score was also composed for this new cut of the film. Originally planned for a limited theatrical release in late 2020, this version later premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.

sadly this was a failure......they changed the good things. the music used here was boring compared to the divine score of the original 155 minutes version. the way the actors performed their voices were changed. the only worthy part was those deleted scenes.

Saw it in New Haven CT in 1980, presumably the 156-min version. I recall reading the novelization, which was of Vidal's original screenplay, NOT the finished movie--Vidal's screenplay was VERY different though after 44 years I don't recall HOW it was different 😉 Supposedly this 178-min Ultimate Cut is meant to come closer to Vidal's version. I'm not sure if I'm up for seeing it in the theater again, even after those 44 years but when it comes out on DVD, I'll certainly watch it then.

@@adityajaishankar9520 I really enjoyed it; the editing made much more sense and there were some sex scenes in the movie but it wasn’t like every 5 minutes we cut to a dick, someone jacking off or an unnecessary orgy scene The performance were great, the sets and costumes got to get a better limelight and look great and even had a few scenes that were never in the theatrical cut that were historically accurate My only criticism would be the new music score; it kept going on but I get that the composer for the original soundtrack disowned the movie(for obvious reasons) and they had to make a new score for this new far superior cut of the movie. I just wish the music wasn’t constantly on, but that’s about it All in all, I’m glad this movie finally got the version that the cast, crew and people who love the theatrical release; myself included; finally got to see the cut of the movie that should have been released all these decades ago! Deep down, I always knew there was a great movie underneath all that porn and we finally got it!

Today she is one of Englands greatest Moviestars, this trailer make you believe, she is in al leading role in this Film. But this is not true. Regardless of the public's, Vidal, and McDowells opinions and the second director medaling in the editing of this movie. this looks wild. I crossed paths with this on Tubi a year back and watched some scenes. This definitely fed into the madness of 70s cinema, the set designs, historical psychedelia, and spectacle. Truly worth a look. This definitely sits in a similar realm with the who's tommy, litzsomania, and jodorowskys the holy mountain. Definitely going to take a watch

A vast improvement from the 1979 original. I totally enjoyed it. The cast was perfection. I hope McDowell is a happy camper, now that his movie has been de-Guccioned. Anytime you de-Guccioni something, it's an automatic improvement. I expected a certain amount of lewdness, because what the crap. We're talking about Caligula who was deranged. But the debauched scenes were scaled way back. It's already a part of my movie collection.

It might be available in non-U.S. formats around the world, but it is not easy to get here. I bought the DVD version a good while back because I did not remember the film and was curious about it. I hope to eventually see the recut and remastered version.

The new version has been castrated leaving all the controversial pornography on the cutting room floor, what is left is a rather theatrical depiction of Caligula's rein with some over the top performances.
