Thanks for the tips! I clean & store my lettuce much the same as you. I soak mine in cold water with a large amount of table salt. I find the salt helps crisp up the leaves. After about 10 minutes or when I remember I rinse each leaf off quickly and put them into a salad spinner. I then use either the veggie zip lock bags with paper towel in it or place it in a large Tupperware container and store in the fridge. My lettuce will last for weeks like this.

Hey there, Joe - thank you for your kind words! it IS amazing how much food can be grown in a little space with a little planning, - utilizing vertical space is key. AND you can't go wrong with the combination of Smart Pots, Good Dirt, Vermisterra worm castings and tea - veggies just explode with growth! Glad you are ordering Good Dirt - you will love it! I just replanted some of my other Smart Pots that have had Good Dirt in them for nearly a year - the soil was still loose and fluffy and looked as amazing as the day I planted it. I just added a handful or two of new Good Dirt, worm castings, watered with worm tea and they were good to go - you will love it! How are those seeds you won growing?

Hi Kim. I forgot to mention the Smart Pots. I cannot wait to try them. The one the I won in your giveaway I am keeping in my grow room. So far, I have planted the Tiny Tim tomato, Genovese basil, and Grand Rapids lettuce in my grow room. I am waiting until fall to plant the peas, chard, and kale. I will have to wait until next season to plant the rest. I am extremely pleased with the choice of seeds in your Small Space Kitchen Garden Collection. I intend to purchase more of your seed collections for spring. Again, great content on your channel, great instruction, and your enthusiasm for gardening is inspiring. Thank you and take care.

A tip for for future plantings: always trim the flower stalks as soon as they pop up. Also, if you’re plants are bolting or sending up flowers, that is a sign they need a little bit of pruning &/or TLC.

I've been watching your vids and others for close to 7 or 8 years. Since I started thinking about container gardening. So thank you for the info. This one is new to me. And I started growing lettuce the last 2 summers. I tried earlier, but the rabbits kept eating it. So the notion of harvesting it so it keeps grown is very helpful. Since what you describe happened the last 2 years and I had to keep replanting the lettuce. I do have to say. While homegrown lettuce is better. I don't mind eating it out of the store. Or radishes, onions or cucumbers. It's not as good. But tomatoes in the winter suck.

How fun to grow veggies for the first time - glad you are loving it! Make sure your basil is getting regular watering, the soil is not waterlogged, or getting super dry. Here is a video with some watering tips, including how to check for moisture, bit.ly/calikimwateringinsummerheat. It needs at least 6 hours of sunlight a day, and should be pruned regularly to encourage growth, as in this video, bit.ly/calikimbasilendlesssupply. Hope this helps - keep me posted!

The tomatoes I have are a patio variety that I bought. I didn’t discover your KZbin channel until after all my starts failed. ☹️. I think it is to late to start any of them now, but I might try the Arkansas traveler. I am going to order your lettuce collection. I have my shade cloth ready. We are heading into triple digits soon so it may be in vain. But I think gardening is trial and error and learning from those errors. Have a wonderful weekend and keep those videos coming. My method is a bit different, I put the harvested lettuce leaves in an ice water bath will about 3 tbs of salt. I let it rest until all the ice is melted. The salt kill the bug and critters. Then I spin it dry, but I have found using a rung out wet paper towel in a zip lock plastic bag allows the lettuce to remain crisp and tasty for about 2 wks.

You can also store lettuce heads tightly in aluminum foil. It'll last for months. I use this method. It really works.
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 Ай бұрын
Somethings to think about in using that method. Here are some concerns about using aluminum foil. Please note that if it works for you and you are fine with that, etc. no judgment from me, keep on :) Aluminum foil can create and trap moisture around the lettuce heads, leading to faster spoilage/rot, etc. Lettuce needs airflow to stay fresh. Foil can also trap ethylene gas, which accelerates the ripening process and can lead to wilting and decay. Ideally, store lettuce heads in a perforated plastic bag or a breathable produce storage bag. OR, you can wrap lettuce heads loosely in a clean, damp cloth or paper towel and place them in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator. Best results: the refrigerator's crisper drawer, where the temperature is slightly cooler and humidity levels can be adjusted. Keeping lettuce cool and dry helps to prolong its freshness and crispness. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I hope you have liked the video and subscribed (I can't always tell who has!) Best -- CaliKim

Hi great video on lettuce. I have several varieties that are just about finished i believe. I just received my seed order from you and look forward to see the new varieties of lettuce. How long should i harvest? I have several that the main stem is now about 14 inches tall with a few leaves of lettuce growing only on the very top. The full length of the stems are bare? Is it time to pull these and plant new? I am using a raised garden bed and was wondering since it has been about 47 degrees here in Ventura, California at night, can i plant your seeds directly in my garden bed or must i start the seeds indoors? Suggestions? Thanks for the great videos! Me and my Sister recently received our order from you and were pleasantly surprised. You really pay attention to the details! Congrats on the new book! Hope you sell out multiple times! Have a great day!

@Grizelda1227
@Grizelda1227 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that means your plant is “bolting”. It will send out flowers and die after. It is the plant’s last-ditch effort to spread its pollen/seeds before dying. If you keep up with regular pruning and maintenance, it will not bolt. 👍 cut and remove any flower stalks

Every youtuber's garden always seem to grow much faster than mine. I started my tomatoes before you and yours are already ripening lol.

Hello Jack - you'll have ripe tomatoes before you know it! Just think how good they will taste, a reward for all your hard work and patience! How the garden grows is so dependent on the weather - tomatoes thrive once the nights are in the 60's and days are 70-85. Hang in there!

Thanks for the great video. I am struggling with vermicomposting and was wondering if you were still doing that.

I’m not anymore -my garden is full of worms bc of all the organic matter I’ve added. Vermicomposting can be tricky and I did not have good results with a batch and therefore decided to focus on building a healthy environment for worms in my entire garden. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!!

So when we buy lettuce in the store, I assume they are just cutting off the whole plant so that it says in a bunch type thing right? I just planted my first garden so I’m trying to figure out how this all works

Thank you! for my thoughts lol my question is how did you get your lettuce to grow through the crate holes?
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 Ай бұрын
I cut a hole in the crate liner. I started the seeds indoors, when they were ready to go outside, I pushed them through the crate and in the hole. I cover this in my video: How to build strawberry lettuce crate tower. Thank you so much and my apologies for the delay. CK

I planted romaine and was trying to harvest it for it to continue to keep producing (not really knowing what I was dooing).. but it seems to just keep growing tall one of the plants does have a flowering at the top. Does that mean it is beyond and not any good? Also... the places where I removed leaves to harvest don't seem to be growing back, Any ideas?

I followed someone’s advice to cut the head, of course leaving enough for grow back, but I feel like the romaine didn’t like it. Red leaf was fine and is growing back, but the romaine which I cleaned from first, is not doing as good.

The cut and grow method will make it last longer. Basically just take what you need from the putter leaves, so it keeps growing without being chopped
