after growing my own strawberries i can no longer eat supermarket ones as they are so flavorless. also been growing them for 3 years and never once have i covered them and im in Australia we get 45 Celsius and higher. the hotter it is the more frequent you water.

Scotchskillz Hi!! Do u put them in full sun or semi shade? I’m in south Australia. My strawberry plants all have curling leaves with crispy brown edges. I tried both full sun and semi shade....
@Ylangla
@Ylangla 5 жыл бұрын
TT Hakubayi I live in WA and have my strawberries in full morning sun but as the day progresses they get more shade. To avoid browning edges do not wet their leaves but rather water the plants by keeping a watering can as close to the ground as possible (wet the ground only)

Crate towers are a good idea. Will try it with my own strawberries someday. 😉 Yout strawberries are gorgeous. Lots of love from Baguio Philippines
@Seezor
@Seezor 6 жыл бұрын
Nice idea with those towers. I do have a shade cloth tip. The color black attracts heat as shade cloth it works well to block light. Just a thought. If you were to use 4 stakes atop your tower set diagonally outward on all 4 corners, then set your shade cloth on top leaving the sunniest sides draped and the others a bit open, your shade cloth could work better by allowing air flow through and shade above. The shade cloth touching the plants in the towers can block air flow and become a semi-solar oven. Not so much to bake your plants but not as efficient as creating some air flow beneath the shade. Just a thought but I love your towers and your harvest.

Thanks for all those tips. I probably don't water or fertilize mine enough and didn't realize they need shade cloth when it gets hot. I grow mine in a raised bed -- about 22 inches by 13 feet. I built a chicken wire cage over them as the deer like them and keeps them away from the slugs. That also makes a nice frame for the shade cloth.Berries are just starting to form here in E. Wa zone 6b.

Hi Jennifer... Definitely plant from runners if you can. Seeds will germinate and grow quite easily... However, they don't fruit in their first year. It's a lot of work. Simply just clip off some runners in the early summer... Plant them high (don't bury the crown), and you'll be good to go!

I also used my own worm castings and worm tea but I've heard so many great results from using Vermisterra. Do you think Vermisterra worm castings would work better? I haven't tried it yet, but if it's worth going for let me know, and why? Thank you for all the great tips - Jocelyn
@CaliKim29
@CaliKim29 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jocelyn, so proud of you for making your crate towers - way to go! I've seen such a huge difference in my garden with the Vermisterra castings and tea. The key is consistency - your garden needs those powerful nutrients on a regular basis to be heathy and productive. It's hard for me to produce enough worm castings and tea on my own to feed my garden consistently. The Vermisterra worm castings are aged, which gives them time to stabilize so there is no concern of pathogens and virtually no heavy metals. The tea is shelf stable in the bottle, unlike homemade worm tea, which needs to be used right away to be effective (potential harmful bacteria develop pretty quickly in homemade teas). Lots of beneficial bacteria and microbes which really boots your plants along. More info at vermisterra.com - If you decide to pick some up use my code "calikim" so you get your 10% discount. Keep me posted!

Wherever you grow them mulch them alot and if you want lots of berries cut the runners and they cant make more plants if they are in towers nature does the work if they are on the ground. I remember having so many runners and extra plants into 2nd year having them i know i had to be doing it right lol i just didnt cut the runners like i should have would have doubled or tripled berry production

I’m growing them from a hanging basket basket container that I purchased from Lowe’s 3 weeks ago. I currently have about 6 berries growing right now and they look great and pretty healthy and I would like to keep them that way as more grow. However; I need a few tips from you in order to do so. What kinda fertilizer do I need in order to keep them reproducing & healthy? I heard that tomato fertilizer will help them produce rapidly and stay healthy. Is that true? What is warm tea fertilizer and where do I find it? I heard you mention it in this video.

They look a lot better than mine lol some are really small and some didn't look so good, I had them for about 3 years and I propagated (runners from another plant) some of the plants from previous plants and I was gonna pull them up this year but then they started producing some strawberries so I don't know if I should pull them or leave them, what strawberry type would you suggest to grow I'm in Zone 7 GA when you but the transplants from the store they don't label them well they just say Quinault berries

Some bug ate up my kale. Never could see what got at it but it chewed it up bad. So no garden kale this year. Might try again in the fall.

That is A LOT of HEAT! We are finally having some warm weather in Wisconsin. Your berries look great. I can see why you use a shade cloth. The heat alone seems like it could cook the berries.

Hi Lark! it's been hot early this year - glad you are getting some heat there in WI too! Bet it feels sooo good to get out in the garden. Shade cloth is a lifesaver! Do you grow berries? Thanks for stopping by!

Beautiful berries! I’ve tried growing different varieties of strawberries the last 3 years that all claim to have large berries but they always end up being very small when they get ripe. Any suggestions on how to get them to be bigger? Someone told me to try a water soluble tomato fertilizer but I couldn’t find any at the local shop.

Berry season has arrived here in bristol, tn didnt have the finances to buy the case or two from the local farm thats been in this our area for many years, but i did buy 1 qt to eat while driving to my doctors appt. I will get my usual berries and rinse them off then, freeze in 1/2 pt. Bags then us them as ice cubes! After drinking my ice tea i have berries to snack on. Oh yea! So good and healthy, now i need to build some berry crates like the ones you made. Starting my grow boxes on my deck like yours last year i did not grow anything because of illnes this year I've started my grow boxes now I just have to put some vegetables in them usually I grow a couple or three tomato plants I'm usually lucky with the zucchini green peppers and yellow squash I give some away to my neighbors in the park where I live because it's just me, the park manager she loves it every year I don't mind giving neighbors fresh vegetables it just goes to show that anyone can do anything you set your mind to! I asked my neighbors for nothing in return except enjoy what I do give them I expect nothing except I thank you and I usually get that. my deck like yours is 22 Buy 8ft I use 6 grow boxes and 5 to 6 round planters but this year I'm not going to use that many I'm just going to play and have fun and thank God for allowing me to grow some good food thank you for what you doing your videos I've learned a few things from you! I just wish my health was better so I can do more but this makes me feel better just getting my hands dirty and food always tastes better when you know where it comes from and you get the dirt on your fingernails now in the next couple days probably by the end of this weekend I have four of the grow boxes filled and to or three of the round containers with with the seeds thank you for you're insite on the easiest and the best way to do things from a fellow gardener who is a novice at growing things I enjoy watching nature grow I also enjoy eating the fabulous vegetables I'm in Bristol Tennessee we have pretty good weather here now I just have to plant wait and enjoy!

Some people say to put the seeds in a sealed bag in the freezer for 3 to 4 weeks. when you take them out wait till the bag and the seeds are room temperature, before toy take the seeds out to plant them.
