In this video I review the Caline Pedal Power Supply.
This supply appears to be identical to the Joyo Pedal Power Supply.
All in all this product is great value with the exception of the polarity reversing adaptors which appear to only be straight through and do not reverse the polarity.

Wanted to thank you for posting this helpful meat 'n taters review Paul. Although 4 years old now, I just discovered it whilst researching PSUs for my pedals, so it's still super helpful. Can't believe with over 32,000 views, it only has a miserable 280+ thumbs up,....and 7 tossers who couldn't find their own arse with both hands. :) After checking out the current state of the marketplace in 2018, I bought the same Caline CP-05. Joyo, Caline, and half a dozen other rebrands all appear to be the same (Caline HK?) unit rebadged/reboxed. It's in transit, so when I get it I'll test those supposed polarity conversion cables and let you know if Caline are still shipping with extensions rather than converters in current stock. Thanks for the heads up on that BTW. Like most I expect, I probably would have taken them for granted and only discovered them flawed when I fried a pedal if I actually tried to use them. o.O !!! Super value unit. Although not true isolation, with its individual port protection and low noise it's still better than daisy chaining directly from an unregulated switching wall wart. I was going to go a Vitoos DC-08 with isolation, but sourcing one *at the right price* supplied with an AU plug PSU has been a challenge so far. Persistence will eventually pay off and I'll eventually get one, but the Caline CP-05 will serve for now. Again, thanks for taking the time to post your down to earth hands on review of your experience with the Caline CP-05.

The Blytonian, pleasure is mine sir. I have noticed more of these PSU's getting around with other brands on them. After all this time my two are still going. One gets used on a regular basis with not one ounce of trouble. Like you said they are great value despite not being isolated. All the best!

Strange... On mine it reversed the polarity. However, I couldn't use it in conjunction with other pedals that were the opposite polarity because it wanted to short out. Kind of no point in having the cable.... Great review, btw. I like that you opened it up.

I have two gator G-BUS-8 power supplys for my pedals. One I had for a few months and worked fine, the other I just got yesterday and it doesn't work at all. After the new one was plugged in and didn't work, suddenly the other one stopped working too except for the 18V side. I tested the new power brick I just got, and all the 9V slots were jumping between -0.01 and -0.02, but the 18V read at -17.95 on all three slots. As I said earlier, I bought the exact same one a few months ago and got the exact same read out. -0.01 and -0.02 on all the 9V slots, and -17.95 on all three 18V slots. However, the 18V side still works on all three slots. Also, while both are plugged into two different outlets, there's a buzzing sound it makes even when nothing else is connected to it. As of now, I have 14 pedals and no power source for them :( I understand if the new one I just got is faulty, but why was it that suddenly the first one I bought prior (came attached to the pedal board) suddenly doesn't work either? That's what I can't figure out.

This power supply is basic electronics 101. From this video it is two linear regulators run off a 18VDC wall wart. Each output has an output capacitor to help hold up load impulses. It does NOT have isolated outputs because the input power is common to all outputs and all outputs are also common to the linear regulator. All grounds are connected. You have to spend more to have isolated power. In the proper circumstances this will work fine for some but it is one common power supply. There is a small difference between this and a daisy chain as the box acts somewhat as a shield and if the cables are kept short you may see an improvement in 60hz hum but ground coupling will still be a possibility.

Hi, so I only recently found out about this 'polarity' business when it came down to effect pedals. I checked all of my guitar pedals and they seemed to have (+) - (C) - (-) and I think you call this negative polarity? Without knowing anything, I've tried to use some random AC/DC Power Adaptor but they never worked and now I know why it didn't work smh. The power supply adaptor only supported (-) - (C) - (+) polarity. So now knowing what kind of crazy things could've happened with life, I've got a bundle of questions if I could grab some help from you Paul and the gentlemen who seem to possess brains that I don't have. 0) With the caline Pedal Power Supply from the video, does it support (+) - (C) - (-) polarity or the other way around? 1) If the polarity on my DC 9V pedal indicates (+) - (C) - (-), will I have to find a DC 9 Voltage Power Adaptor with the same polarity sign? Is it safe or allowed to use AC/DC 9V Power Supply Adaptor? 2) All of my pedals indicate that I need a 9V power supply but it doesn't mention anything about the ampere. Does it matter when it comes to amperes? Since my pedals use batteries, should I refer the amperes to the amperes used by the battery? 3) I've heard posts saying that I should never use a daisy chain with reverse polarity DC Power supply Adaptor. Is this true? 4) If my question 3 is true, does that mean I will have to purchase a separate DC 9V Power supplies for every single one of the pedals? I did hear about a reverse polarity daisy chain, but does that actually exist? 5) If there is a reverse polarity daisy chain, and if I happen to possess both positive and negative polarity pedals, will I need to have two different power supply adaptors (One with positive polarity, the other with negative polarity), and two opposing polarity daisy chain and connect them to the compatible pedals?
@PaulGrahamGuitarst
@PaulGrahamGuitarst 7 жыл бұрын
To answer your questions. 0) Yes it does support a positive outer and negative inner connector polarity. (Like Boss, Ibanez, Maxon, ect.) 1) Yes the polarity of the supply must be the same. reverse polarity can damage the pedal. AC/DC power adaptors are fine as long as you adhere to the voltage requirements and the supply current is higher that the pedal requires. Although some adaptors can induce noise into your signal path. 2) Power supply current figure must be higher that the combined current of your pedals. To achieve this look up the spec of each pedal online and add up the figures. Generally distortion and overdrive pedals are 50mA and delays can be up to 300mA. Choruses and flangers somewhere between. So if you run say three pedals each consuming 50mA of current that would be 50 + 50 +50 = 150mA. Make sure your Power supply can supply more than that. So a 300mA supply would be ok. A 100mA might not work so well. 3) This is absolutely correct. It will short out your supply. The shield in the instrument cable between each pedal connects the grounds of each pedal together. This means when one pedal is positive ground and another is negative ground, you basically short out the supply through the instrument cable connecting them. Supplies with isolated outputs can get around this. Or run a separate supply for the two polarity types. 4) Yes you will need separate supplies or a supply with isolated outputs. 5)Yes you will or run supply with isolated outputs.

For about $4 you can get a daisy chain lead. Power a couple of your less power hungry pedals (lower mA) from one 9V output. Usually overdrive, distortion, tremolo, chorus and fuzz pedals have low current consumption (less than 30mA). I would daisy chain a couple of these together. Delays and reverbs tend to be on the higher side ( above 50mA) so only use one per output on the pedal power. If the pedals combined power consumption exceeds the current limiting on the power supply the Pedal Power will go into fault mode on that output just disconnect it and try a different combination.

I have mains hum. All my pedals run fine with 9v Batteries (absolutely no hum or fizz). When I run them (even only one each time) I get a deep humming noise. You opened this device. @PaulGrahamGuitarst

InTheSh8 The version of this Power Supply I have uses a switch mode wall wart style of supply.By its design it does not transfer mains hum to the low voltage side like a linear supply can and as a result the supply voltage is clean and quiet.The wall wart puts out 18 volts. The Pedal Power 5 unit has voltage regulators in it for 9 and 12 volts.These regulators only need small capacitors for stability and RF blocking, they aren't really there to smooth out the voltage.Now this makes me wonder when you say even with one pedal connected it has a deep humming sound that maybe the wall wart Power supply is a linear supply?The only other possibility is that there is a fault with the unit you have and it is generating the hum.My two are still going strong after two years.

9V pedals can generally get power from outputs 1-8. The line six if it requires AC, I would use a separate supply. I have heard however that you can run them off 9V DC and if you do work that out I would use power output 8 for it higher current rating.

@PaulGrahamGuitarst
@PaulGrahamGuitarst 7 жыл бұрын
Well 1200mA is way too much for this PSU. Better look at other options. There are adaptor leads that swap the polarity but you will not find any to switch from DC to AC. AC to DC is possible though. Switching DC to AC requires lots of circuitry it would be easier to run a separate supply. I would run the OEM supply for the Line6 and another supply for the rest.

@@PaulGrahamGuitarst Direct current (DC) is the flow of electrons in one continuous direction. Alternating current (AC) switches the direction of electron flow at a specific frequency. In the US, the direction of electrons is reversed 60 times each second. To convert DC into AC, you would have to create a switching device capable of reversing the electron flow sixty times per second- which a simple cable cannot do.

@PaulGrahamGuitarst
@PaulGrahamGuitarst 7 жыл бұрын
No. I would not recommend that. You can however run more pedals off the existing 9V outputs with a daisy chain lead. I would power overdrive, distortion and most modulation pedals from one output happily. No more than two pedals per output from outputs 1 to 7. On output 8 you could run a few. Leave delays and reverbs on their own output as they generally consume more current. With this particular power supply if you overload an output it will go into over current and the LED will go out, no harm done, just change things around and try again.

Since you ask this question, the short answer is "No". But the fact is, if you knew more about electricity, the answer would involve adding some resistence between the 12v or 18v port and the 9v pedal and it would work very well.

If you are running an old wall wart it may be contributing to your noise problem. These Caline supplies are regulated and supply very quiet power. While the Caline Pedal Power is isolated from the mains and earth the outputs aren't isolated from each other so if you run negative and positive ground pedals you may short out one of the outputs and have it go into current limiting mode. It should not damage anything though. Most pedals are negative ground these days. so this is rarely a problem. Power supplies are not the only potential source of noise as single coil pickups tend to pickup 60 cycle hum, poor quality cables and bad connections can also contribute to noise problems. High gain stages will amplify the noise also making even more noticeable. Also try running your pedals on batteries just to see if the problem goes away. if it does you know its you power supply.I have been using Caline CP-5 for about a year and half now with out a single issue. I run 9 pedals and a graphic EQ off it and gets gigged regularly.

Musictrading 张 Sorry to ask same question again, is it really isolated? Does anybody verified output grounds continuity with multimeter? Just curious, because that isolation usually requires either transformer with separate junctions or switched mode DC/DC islolating converter (IC) for each output. If it is really isolated, it will be bomb for that price.. :-) Thanks, Michal
@PaulGrahamGuitarst
@PaulGrahamGuitarst 10 жыл бұрын
Michal Šmucr Sorry for t he late reply. It turns out that when I checked the continuity between outputs all of the negative outputs are tied together as ground I guess. This will be a problem if a pedal with positive ground is used with negative ground pedals as the power will be shorted out via the ground conductor of the instrument cable connecting the pedals. So while a short circuit on one output will not pull the rest down the outputs are not truly isolated. Hope that helps.

***** Hi Paul, thanks for testing! I don't think, that is specially problematic with center positive pedals, this is just matter of connector. But some pedalboard setups benefits from breaking of ground loops between pedals to avoid 50/60 Hz hum. But it is not general requirement as humming susceptibility depends on particular FX pedals combination, its construction and circuitry. So it couldn't be problem. And if somebody, who is looking for that PS, currently use plain daisy chain without any hum issues, he will be fine also with Caline with added benefit of independent outputs filtration, short and overload protection, plus two additional voltages. Still, it looks like, that this PS is good value for money.

***** Hi Paul, great review. I'm thinking of bagging one of these but it will only be a worthwhile option if it works happily with my Line 6 Echo Park. The problem with the Echo Park is that when used with the same PSU as other Boss style pedals it causes terrible hum. If it gets it's own PSU then the hum is gone. Do you know if the fact that this has some level of isolation between each output stop this hum problem?

The Caline CP-5 has current limiting. There should be no reason for it to fail running a few pedals and if they were too much for it current limiting would kick in. I would send it back. I have been running 10 x 9 volt pedals on mine for hours at a time for gigging over the last six months with out a single problem. Contact the seller and explain what is happening. I am sure it can be sorted out.

Raymond27 I do not recommend running 9V pedals off 12V supply as this could damage pedals. You need daisy chain power cable to run two pedals off one output. Looks like this images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/312o5m%2BEy-L.jpg Hope you find this helpful. If you look at the specs on your pedals you will see the current consumption. Its usually measured in milliamps (mA). Outputs 1 to 7 on the Caline power supply are good for 100mA and output 8 is good for 500mA. So if you have 3 pedals each 30mA you can put them all on a single output between 1 and 7 since they will only consume 90mA combined. Do you know what I mean?

@@mahoganymarco9199 The price!!!. Anything below or in the range of 35 USD has Isolated outputs. Sometime product descriptions are misleading because they write "isolated outputs". This one does. "isolated" can mean different things depending on the context (like ground). Sellers know that and they used often because they are aware about the lack of electronic knowledge of the potential buyers. They don't lie, they just tell outputs are isolated but they often forgot to specify "against short circuit" i.e. if you shortcut one pedal output the rest are safe of DC shorting, just that. The kind of isolation people want in this context means: "None of the outputs are sharing common return path to the source". Wich is a key aspect in noise reduction specially when using a Effects Loop (active or passive). I can tell you that is not the case of this DC PSU. Or any other in this range of price. I had one Caline like that in my hands a couple of weeks ago. A friend of mine brought me a screaming pedalboard having one of those. And all the outputs are sharing same return path to the source so it is not isolated.

doesnt look like you actually checked the PNP adapter? you showed the positive ground adapter with one female end and one male end- then didnt use it. you have to use a regular male-male cable and plug the female end of the positive ground adapter into it then the male end of positive adapter into your positive ground pedal. Also, did you check to see if these are isolated supplies as they advertise? they really need to be isolated supplies to safely power a PNP pedal anyways- then you dont even need an adapter.

The first thing I've noticed about people who comment or ask questions here is that they are either too lazy or too stupid to read the directions. Every pedal I've seen and every power supply tells you the polarity of each conductor. Failing that, the information is certainly available on the Internet. The second thing I notice is that because this guy made a video, people think he's an authority on the device or some kind of electronics technician. Paul, if you take this personal, it's not my problem: I don't mean it to be, And while I commend you for realizing the "reverse pole" pigtail was bogus, I'm curious where you obtained all your electrical and electronics knowledge. I believe it needs some work. As to your review, It may have helped some people, but it fails to address more than it covers. Taking the ends and cover off the device was, largely, pointless since nobody gives a shit about the cap values. What else did we learn from that? I didn't hear mention of diodes, resistors or any other components, but I'll bet there are some and they have a (unmentioned) purpose.

Been using one on my pedal board for about 10 months now. I am probably running that power supply to its limit. Even daisy chained a couple of the lower current pedals. It is silent, no hum what so ever. Since it uses a small switching PSU in the form of the wall wart you will not get the 50/60 cycle hum and beyond that it uses regulators to reduce the voltage further. Is it worth it? Yes as long as it remains reliable and doesn't die.

@PaulGrahamGuitarst 10 жыл бұрын
If you only need 9 volts then the 1 Spot will do but bare in mind it has no fault protection but it doesn't take up much real estate on your board. The Joyo and the Caline are pretty much identical and you have 12V and 18V and over current protection on each circuit. Makes it easy to find a fault. But they take up more room. They all should be relatively noise free. Hope I have helped.

These outputs are not isolated, they don't need to be! That isolation chased after by guitarists as a "must have" nowadays is a totally unnecessary feature. Guitarists are a marketing man's dream in their ease of being led to believe something technical is an absolute necessity. "Of course our unit has the latest boutique-stoppy-noisy-costy-lotsy-technology built in! What, you don't have that already? (slow hissing intake of breath through clenched teeth.)" If you have a noise problem through non-isolation when you use certain pedals or combinations of them then you have issues elsewhere in your pedals and other gear which should be sorted out. The overall supply is being blamed for a problem in your gear elsewhere. I have come across and dealt with noise immunity on data gathering survey boats where grounds can differ by up to 50V between the front and the back of a boat, and that is not due to a fault, that is the nature of a real current loop with noise problem! The terrifying prospect of the "ground loop", (another guitarist buzzword dropped into a conversation to sound knowledgeable), should be a non-issue in normal gear. They are even reported by the non-electronic (but "internet knowledgeable") to be found inside guitars which are absolutely immune to them, (they are caused by stray currents through the ground paths, now remind me, what current is there inside a guitar?) I have two of these units which I use because they were cheaper by far than anything I could even design and build myself, (my day job is running an electronic design and development lab). Neither has any significant noise at all in use and neither has ever given me a single problem. My usage is pretty light, about a half dozen pedals not all in use together, and the 18V lower current wall wart they come with could be upgraded to a 2A model but only for situations of very hungry total current use. For the money they can't be beaten, and compared to the utterly moronic money people are prepared to pay, £100+ for a box with a handful of dirt cheap and easily available components inside which give no better performance in sound terms but offer great bragging rights with other guitarists, they are a steal. I didn't experience the problem of the non-inverting inverting tails but, as you have shown that to be the case, that is a very bad mistake for them to make. I'd bet that would be an external supplier sending faulty manufactured bits, though they should accept the responsibility got the error themselves of course. Once rectified, the rest of the unit should not be unfairly criticised on the back of a badly produced cable. Great review!

I went with the MXR ISO-Brick, and its been great. The main thing is to make sure that it is Isolated. Most sellers advertise the Caline as Isolated but it's not, in fact inside the product catalog they send you with the supply has an isolated version inside. That is what brought it to my attention. The sellers just either don't know, or don't care. My one spot was less noisy than the Caline. Lesson learned, and I got what I paid for.
