Honestly the first time I did a muscle up it was the most exhilarating feeling. It literally felt as if I was on top of the world. Over time however, I realized that it was a movement that put stress on my elbows and shoulders. It was also replaceable with other movements and wasn’t some unique move for secret strength.

The muscle ups strangely feel awesome when you do them. There's no other exercises that feel as rewarding as them, not sure why. I love them, but I do them mostly as a 'warm up' before a workout. 5-6 clean muscle ups for a few sets and after that, I feel hyped and ready for my levers, pull ups, etc,

At age 21 I did 43, strict, no kips, double muscle ups in University of Virginia gym with a law student keeping count. I had started working on them at age 16 when I saw a guy do one behind the high school gym and was hugely impressed, made a horizontal bar behind my parent's house and worked very hard at it, getting that first one. I was a wrestler (not very good - average); so, was an athlete and weight lifter. The trick was an "over grip" on the bar and having very thin, light legs, lower body. My strength was all in my upper body. I am now 81 and can not do a regular pull up.

In my opinion it is simply a skill. The skills of callisthenics evolve and influence each other in such a way that some skills are king. We call them the basics. That however does not make them fundamental. What is fundamental are the principles and precepts. This skill falls under that fundament. I see it, not as a technique or a workout in its entirety, and don't believe it should not be viewed as such. When you reach a plateau, in any area, you must begin to switch gears and learn new things. Could be anything, but after you've learned and practiced enough new things, you will find in them the "answer" to your plateau. The muscle up is one such thing. It's simply something you do. Not a point of mastery. Not a manifestation. You learn it for it's heuristic benefit. It is a means in and of itself-by its sake-for its sake. Nothing more; nothing less. The fast and loose rule is to generalize, not specialize. Although "generalize" isn't even the proper word in this connotation. Appropriatize, actualize, and naturalize are more effective depictions of the Martial material. The very essences of what we're trying to achieve on the path to Martial mastery. That is the art of Martial Arts. The art of all arts no less.

@lionelbuffman57904 жыл бұрын
I believe that the muscle up has some carry over benefit as regards climbing onto surfaces (especially the grip transition phase) but a lot of the time in real life, surfaces you'll be climbing are walls or flat surfaces; not suspended bars or rings. There is also a biomechanical difference as regards what you need to do with your legs and posture when climbing a flat wall surface (as if you pull yourself too far from the wall as in a muscle up, you will fall); but I think the explosive pull strength and grip transition will still be relevant in these situations
