Im a rookie who only ever did 1 cff but they're doing that "splash" call wrong. Splash is initiated by the observer when he sees the impact. Why is the guns guy saying it and the observer responding before impact? Makes no sense
@thomoski7 ай бұрын
The Splash call is from the FDC to indicate 5 seconds to the round(s) landing - gives the FO time to make sure they're observing for adjust-fire missions - you can hear one of the observers counting down after the Splash call
@impulsiveDecider4 ай бұрын
For artillery, Splash almost always is a call by the FDC indicating five seconds before impact. This is especially useful if the target is able to suppress the FO and therefore, the FO should remain in cover and only expose to look for the adjustments. Five seconds are usually enough to pop out of cover and quickly down again. It's also just useful since in the moment you might miss the impact, even if not being shot at.
@mattm28944 ай бұрын
@impulsiveDecider right all of that is true except splash isn't what they say. It doesn't make as much sense imo. What the guys I went with did was FDC radios "shot" indicating all what you were saying and the FO responds splash. That way if the FO didn't see splash at all that's a quick indicator somebody fucked up the grid
@impulsiveDecider4 ай бұрын
@@mattm2894 Where was this done? Was this outside of NATO?
@impulsiveDecider4 ай бұрын
@@mattm2894 Also that's just superfluous. If you request TOF, you will know if something got fucked up. Splash is a standardized call, you can look this up in the publicly available documentation so you don't even need a CA for you to verify this. Google "MTTP-JFIRE" and go to the explanation, it will say: "SPLASH - 1) (A/S) Weapons impact. 2) (S/S) Informative call to observer or spotter five seconds prior to estimated time of impact. 3) (air- to-air [A/A]) Target destroyed." It details three uses of the word, 1) either when an aircraft employs a surface munition and weapons impact is observed, 2) Call to observer as previously described or 3) when an aircraft destroys an aerial target.

I noticed yall in the military use so much paper for stuff lol. Documentation from maps down to even call for mortars, it seems yall gotta write it down. Now I know yall dont wanna rely on an Ipad too much when shit gets real, but seriously it would be alot more simple lol. Especially when the transition to guided mortars comes along.
