Can't remember which author said it but horror and mystery are the exact same genre with one difference: in a mystery story, you're intrigued by the investigation's developments and want to know more, but in a horror story you're horrified by the clues you find and have no desire to know what's next.

I allow players to check their box on a fumble to reflect that people can learn from failure as much as success. I also allow it on any one failed roll per session, with an explanation from the player as to how their Investigator learned from the failure if I then approve their reason they get a check. Of course, I have the limit so people aren't just rolling all the time to get fails and a check on skills.

I like adding "personal secrets " to my rpg characters... it usually involves being witness to something they repress but are reminded of through the campaign, maybe a major crime they got away with and the guilt erodes a Stat until confessed... but all secrets have an added layer that it will dictate a behavior wherever possible (avoiding certain npcs or areas, trying to split off at every opportunity, being more susceptible to madness or wild temper.) These are great when you've got a good handle on character creation or are trying to encourage deeper role play in the table, which can help some newer players get more invested earlier

Had a house rule that when a character went insane, the keeper would roll a dice in secret. Even numbers meant you sit and drool doing nothing. Odd numbers meant the keeper controlled you for that turn/session. Roll again, 1 and 2 something useful (a clue to winning, etc), 3 and 4 something indirectly bad (open a door that shouldn't be open, etc), 5 and 6 attack a friendly. 14.48 that shadow on the far right is very CoC.

Always ask for a Sanity roll before describing what is causing the need for one... it always freaks out the players more, because they have no idea what they have just stumbled onto! :)
@SteveMND
@SteveMND 4 жыл бұрын
Yep! It also allows you to tailor the description to what it is that caused it. Had one investigator that failed their SAN roll, but succeeded in 'repressing' it, so the flayed skin of a victim that cultist was wearing over his shoulders appeared, to her, to just be some weird "soaking wet red leather jacket." Also, if your players are the sort that will allow you to make these rolls for them in secret, that's even better, because then they really don't know whether they actually succeeded, or if their brain is playing elaborate tricks on them.
@Nichoalsziv
@Nichoalsziv 4 жыл бұрын
Sandy Peterson himself the author of CoC, specifically talks about not doing that. Story first, then metagame jargon i.e. "roll for sanity" Not to mention, if your following the "maximise tension" line of reasoning; it's far better to keep the player weary of anything you say because any sentence could be ending with "roll for sanity." When you lead with "roll for sanity" the player has already moved on from the event and pays less attention to the rest, they've already gotten the mechanic information they've needed from the encounter.
@madquest8
@madquest8 4 жыл бұрын
@@Nichoalsziv I strongly disagree, try it out with your players. If you tell everyone what the threat is and name it, then they know exactly what they are up against and how to deal with it. Instead of being scared. First identifying things should require mythos rolls and research... and without those they may never know what that thing they encountered really was. Secondly if you are with someone and they open a door ahead of you... then the GM says "Make a sanity roll" and they fail, ending in them passing out or running away screaming... are you going to look through the door? If you already know its "Just a ghoul" and you are armed, chances are you might risk it. If you have no idea what just drove your friend mad, then the fear is REAL. My advice stands and has been proved by my play group... but perhaps it depends on your players. I say keep the fear real... roll for sanity first, let them wonder... then every time they hear those words, they will be on edge and worried about what exactly they have stumbled onto.
@Nichoalsziv
@Nichoalsziv 4 жыл бұрын
@@madquest8You're arguing against a position I don't hold. But I also understand what your trying to get across and agree with you there. Just not the method you take. The threat is the story, the thing that is happening. If you're afraid your players know what a ghoul is, use a different term. Describe the ghoul, it's smell, appearance and sound it makes. You never need to say it's a ghoul, keep that information for a roll. The sanity roll is just a mechanic, it's not the threat, the rotting pile of guts spilling from the corpse's stomach, and the buzzing flies that surround it -- are. Don't take it just from me, here's Peterson talking about this very topic. If it's real-life proof you want, I'm not sure you can get better then the game's original writer and by all accounts, also a veteran roleplayer. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXOYnJdmasSbp7s The link starts at the relevant bit, but the whole video is worth a watch.

7:09 - On the particular sentence you said before " Note: rolling a double zero on the 10s die and a zero on the 1s die results on a 100 or a critical faliure. If you "Keeper" is doing their job right, this means something very bad will happen next" - I would slolemnly argue with that. Because there ar no such thing when the highest number on the d10 is 0 which you know It is means 10, now you got 2 of these dice so your precious critical roll has 2 percent of the chance to get the best outcome from the interaction. So, I think this "or" word in this case means harassing your players. Although, I understand that, this is a hardcore and more demanding game, than casual dnd as it seems. An other comment on the particular sentence you said before, you can grab a d20 and divide 100 with the result, not as accurate as the method heard before, but if you want to see the most truly result therefore you should buy a true d100. If I got something wrong write a comment, beacuse this roleplayer just got know about CoC at the moment. *wink*

A simple starter one is everyone been cordially invented to the opening of a new exhibit at a museum by an npc as "single" player characters. The group forms during the events of the scenario. The new exhibit is either been hunted by someone who wants the guests as sacrifices or it IS the threat and mentally effects the guests. If the players are well versed in CoC and utterly paranoid then don't make it as easy been the NEW exhibit.

You should get the starter set, it has everything that you need to play, www.chaosium.com/call-of-cthulhu-starter-set/ when you buy the physical produce, from the Chaosium website, you also get a copy of the PDF. If you plan on being the Keeper, you can run only 1 player, or up to how many you think you can handle. Once you get the starter set, read through the rules, take one of the character sheets out of the starter box and roll up a character. If you start to feel lost, refer back to the section of this video where she explains what to do. Take bite size sections at a time, try not to take it all in at once, or you will become overwhelmed. I assume you have very limited experience with Roleplaying Games. The starter set does not cost very much, and is a very good way to find out if you like the system or not, without spending a lot of money. I hope this helps.

Not bad. The essence of "Cosmic Horror" is recognizing the utter insignificance of the human species; while all COC adventures aren't directly confronting cosmic horror, it's definitely there in the background. When the investigators are investigating a murder, they should never know whether the culprit is a gangland assassin, a crazed serial killer, or an immortal invisible alien god of immense power that came to earth a million years before humans evolved and who will one day destroy all human life. Played correctly, you'll be re-rolling characters often. The characters that don't die erode as their sanity declines, and a good keeper will usher them into becoming insane NPC's as the player rotates a fresh slate of SAN points into the fray. My favorite Call of Cthulhu Character ever was a grave digger named Edgar, who occasionally did favors for some of the professors at Miskatonic U in exchange for a boot of whiskey now and then.
