Btw, dumbing down started with this game. Compared to Call of Duty1: UO they removed: Cooknades (patched it later it seems) Sprinting Leaning Vehicles (from the MP) Health Packs Maps became smaller for faster gratification. And they started fucking up weapon balance. After this they added hand holdy shit in the next iterations.

And I don't blame you because it was added with the expansion UO (United Offensive), which is the only game I played competitively. CoD2 removed a lot. They brought back some in WaW, some more in MW, but they also added the dreaded perk system and overpowered "killstreaks".

Rifling seemed 10x easier in COD2 than it was in #1/UO, not sure if it was the projectile size or the head hitboxes but rifles went from something that took a lot of practice and skill, to easy mode point & shoot.

Yea we had some people look into that and they theorized it had something to do with "hit registration" or "reg" if memory serves me right. They explained that as a combination of better fps, better ping, better pixel density/better textures that translated to : the chance of you actually hitting what you were aiming at in CoD1:UO was poorer than in CoD2 making the latter "more realistic" and by extent easier. For the record, this was true for all weapons, not only rifles. That's what I meant with weapon balance before: In UO_Rhinevalley it was virtually impossible to kill a sniper up the hill with an MP44 for example, in CoD2 you had a decent chance of killing a sniper in MP_Caen with an MP40.

COD 1 and its expansion united offensive had ironsights so no COD2 was not the first.. COD 2 was the beginning of the end for me, it was the first time they increased the size of the hitboxes, previous to that COD required great skill, the bolt action rifle only servers were amazing.

This all because of the new animations system.The animation is doing everything for you (new Tomb Raider,new Call of Duty,new Battlefield,new Assassins Creed,Far Cry and so on).I rather play an old Tomb Raider games from 90s and have some gameplay in it ,then all these new beautiful Tomb Raider games that I hate it.All the time quick time events !.Wtf ? Mack, you should review a bunch of World War II games. I personally love that time period and I think that it is incredibly underused in gaming. It is the perfect 'global war' setting for FPS, RTS, and Grand Strategy in my opinion. I just have this nasty feeling that if COD is really going back to World War II, it's going to be terrible... Cutscenes everywhere, a story that is the same thing just copy and pasted over to different assets, no FOV slider, bad gun play (no recoil), only the Americans playable, too much Political Correctness, and worst of all: they are going to find some way to add X-Ray vision. Watch me call it totally 100% right here. I hope I'm wrong.

Call of Duty 2 on playstation 2 had no regenerating health. It had medkits. Also, it has a completely different campaign than the Pc version. The Playstation 2 version is called Call of Duty 2: The big red one. It's my childhood. I also love the Pc version, but I think the ps2 version is more pure and hardcore with the health kits.

It's fairly expensive on steam tho, £15 for a game over 10 years old. Yeah in skint atm. Annoying I can't get my original Cd to work on Windows 10. Awesome game though. Found out the other day that Halo was in fact the first game with regen health, always thought halo was overrated. Compared to the ingenuity of goldeneye and perfect dark on the 64, how was halo combat evolved (rhetorical question btw). Also remembered you had almost mouse like aiming with a controller on goldeneye and perfect dark as you could bring up a reticule to aim accurately instead of having auto aim on or that crap we have nowadays on controllers, weird that no other fps continued that on console.

Holy shit this was the game that made me fall in love with PC gaming! My wife bought it for me as a part of our 5-year anniversary! Used to play together, Well... I played, she watched and screamed.. Aww such good memories. After the 2008 release of World at War I gave Up COD because I can't stand the mechanics and community. gotta pick this up again. Thanks!!! for the memories

Best CoDs... CoD,2, CoD, CoD World at War and Modern Warfare 2...OK, was almost in agreement until MW2. What are you talking about? MW2 brought us the rubbish 6v6, Per-to-peer servers through IWNET (or whatever they called it) and nothing new to the table from COD4: Modern Warfare, which IMO was the best all-out CoD. A better list of best cods would be 1:) C0D4: Modern Warfare, 2) CoD, 3) CoD2 and 4) COD:WaW. Black Ops was playable (imo) but every other one has been tripe. Basically, MW2...WRONG!!!!! Also, CoD1 had aiming down sites. ;)

Thousands upon thousands of hours in this game. This is my favorite FPS hands down. And yet I still find enjoyment in modern shooters, including Infinite Warfare. This game was FRIGGIN' HARD on the Veteran difficulty setting. Also, it kills me that they make Red Russia out to be good guys just because they were killing Nazis. Russia was no more righteous than Germany in WWII. Don't get me wrong, I like playing the bad guy from time to time, but why don't we ever get to play as Nazis? Communism is cool but fascism isn't?

I got a right wave of sentimentality sweep over me watching this - some of those locations were like visiting real places (it was funny watching Band Of Brothers with maps like Carentan and Brecourt and saying, oh look I've been there, some aspects of the maps matched up so well... it was the best FPS multiplayer experiences I remember) I've still got my original CD ROM version from back in the day - I just assumed they wouldn't run anymore... might dust them off and give them a whirl.

my absolute retro ww2 favourite is "Soldiers: Heroes of World War II" which over the years progressed into the "men of war series". it was a brutal commando style rts with full destruction, which was amazing at this time. i spent countless hours beating this game and all it´s missions. and guess what, there´s no xp or silly loot crates and shit like this ...

Tbh guys, the problem with regen health is not that its unrealistic, the problem is that the way you get health back is by hiding away from danger until it comes back, a passive action, compared to having to track down medkits and stuff or manage your resources, which would be an active one. Games should be about activity, not being passive.

You are right about one thing Mack the amount of ammo you use in this game is insane,and will say this, this the most realistic intense house to house fighting i have ever experienced was not the Stalingrad campaign,but the Americans in Normandy The Silo Mission you have to take about 5-6 houses you are literally being fired at from all directions whatever building you are trying to take its unmatched in my opinion in what house to house fighting in ww2 was really like.You almost have another round of respect for soldiers who participated in this kind of fighting.

In CoD2 there was also support for high precision hardware accelerated positional audio that was amazing for its time. Yeah it was only for sounds cards from one brand, but there was nothing like it before that. And not for many years after either since Microsoft killed hardware accelerated 3D audio with Windows Vista. CoD2 was a blast in LAN multiplayer.

Hi Mac. I have a kid. He plays Insurgency and recently, T. C. R. 6 Siege on pc. (mouse and keyboard). Hes pretty decent at it, usually staying at 2nd 3th Insurgency aftermatch, with highest difficult settings. Friends come over with controllers and copy of recent Call of Duty to PS3. They do multiplayer for some hours. Jumping and knifing all over the place. Conclusion: According to friends, my kid sucks playing FPS... Hidden and Dangerous review. Please Mac.

Cod 1 had ADS m8, CodUO(the expansion) introduced very short sprints. Cod 2 regen health bullshit, start of the decline imo. I think we were spoiled by Mohaa's no bullshit. I loved Cod 5 aswell when i could find a server with the least bullshit running on it. Hope the new Cod brings back Base Assault. You should try the CodUO campaign Mack, it's good. And the Brits have silenced Stens. ;)

I have the 360 version of this, which is an exact port of the PC version (though only 8 people for online matches lol), and it's backwards compatible on Xbox One. Runs at a full 60 with vsync so it looks quite nice! I actually have to turn the volume down lower when I play it because it's pretty much nonstop carnage until the mission ends, just yelling, gunfire and explosions. Awesome game.

It's the bridge mission in Call of Duty 1 that still gets me... Best WW2 shooter ever. And as much as I loved Medal of Honor, I don't think I ever played it again after I finished it. COD2 I played loads and loved, but I don't think it had that one big standout moment like COD1 and AA had. You should absolutely play the first COD again. Think I might too actually. Magic.

Hey ther Worth A Buy, Fun Fact early in WW2 the Brits didnt have any SMGs in Mass Production so they were forced to order Thompson SMG's from the USA, at a very expensive price, the Thompson SMG's cost around 200 dollars back then when the M1 Garand cost about either 16 or 60 dollars (unsure of what the host of Forgotten Weapons said, was a bit unclear (chanel on KZbin, def worth it to check out, i think you would love it since it seems your a fan of history)

Mack, I have an interesting fact for you about CoD2. They actually didn't want to make CoD2 in WW2. They wanted to go into Modern times right after CoD1. But Activision forced their hand and made them make it as an experiment for consoles. To me, the most funny bit is that CoD2 is the most balanced, graphicly appealing and well themed game from all CoDs. It's really really strange how it turned out.

The British ordered quite a few Thompsons, the British military didn't really like the idea of making their own SMG. They've actually made very few of their own SMGs throughout history, it's just never been popular in the UK. They did design a couple after they got sick of the Thompson's price, but they phased all SMGs out ASAP. Of all the major powers the Brits have designed and manufactured the fewest numbers of SMGs. The British military really likes the idea of unifying all roles into one ammo type.

There was no successor to Mohaa in the MoH series. The talent from MoH left and made COD. The closest thing to successors to Moh:AA was COD 1 and 2. The last single player campaign I ever played was Mohaa and it was MP ever since. Boy do I miss those games. Today's stuff is awful.

I'd love to play this again. Must've done the campaign about 10 times on the hardest difficulty and it was always near-impossible to get through a single mission without dying once. The multi-player was a great experience too; I can hardly believe I'm talking about Cod here.... err... mm... ye... I liked the D-day mission too because this was the first time I learned of the multiple beach landings that happened. Think I'm gonna have to get this again for a re-run.

Interesting note this game was created by the Medal of Honor Allied Assault devs named 2015. They left EA turn into Infinity Ward and now there back with EA called Repawn with the Titanfall series.MOHAA still the best game they ever made.

This is just weird to me. You are using Cod2 as an example of a good game, and comparing it to dumbed down modern games. Back when Cod2 came out, I was complaining that cod2 was a dumbed down modern game. I just don't see how you can suck this game off so much when Cod1 already existed. FFS you are calling it the best Call of Duty game Oh wait I see, you didn't even play the first one! It DID have iron sights. Heck I think it was the game that popularized iron sights. It also had no health regen and no nade indicators. It had a great campaign too, and an expansion with another great campaign: and the multiplayer was awesome. I skeptically recommend the game "Black". I believe it was available on PC. I say skeptically because it's been so long since I've played it that I might have nostalgia goggles, but I remember it being a tough, polished fps with great level design and no cutscenes (except during loading between missions).

as kiddo i liked cod1-2, when they came out. I felt like cod 1 had the better SP due to no hp regen,no grenade indicator and better story, and maybe better maps.Cod 2MP however was rly epic,gunplay felt so good :D. with my bro absolutly loved cod series, not anymore.P Hp regen was actually a good idea for MP, but in SP it destroys gameplay. last year i tried to replay Cod 1,but i couldnt. it was painfully bad experience, had to stop playing it. it was the exact same as modern warfare 1, but more dry. i found modern warfare 2 playable for me, even though i dont rly like/play cods anymore. these new ones never catched my attention as the first 2. Maybe cod is typical genre for kids/teens, and only for teens. u only need to play 1-2 cod game when u are teen and after that forget it for life and never look back :) Return to castle wolfenstein in th other hand, i can play and enjoy even today.very good game

Since you asked The sten gun wasnt produced until 1941 and due to Canada's and the british lack of factories they didnt have the ability to mass produce weapons for there troops So the U.S supplied alot of weapons for the british Such as the Sherman Tompson And P-51 Ect Most american weapons and vehicals were first used by Soviets and the british Im actually suprised there isnt a Sherman in the russian campaign since it was used in every front

Lately I've found myself looking for good story driven games (with fps elements) that don't play out like pretentious movies, and are not part of the Skyrim/Fallout-like RPG genre. I guess now would be a good time to replay Deus Ex (2000), and try Shadow Warrior (that I picked up on sale by your recommendation), eh?

play the original thief games. Thief 1 and 2 are the best stealth games ever made and have rich atmosphere. Thief has an amazing story and it shows the story through gameplay and level design.

if you din't play already..check out the S.t.a.l.k.e.r. game series, the first one and the 3rd (last one) are hidden gems!, also the modding scene is huge #miserymod

Deus Ex is one of my favourites and MKD is one of the only games I've played through twice. I remember enjoying the 2000 one but didn't everyone hate that one? I haven't tried the new one as it didn't look very good, anyone played it and think it's worth playing?

I love your vids Mack but there's no need to knock everything else off the shelf with your old-school boner. And I'm right with you in saying that shooters in 2017 are fucking bollocks. Edit: Just saw in another response that you said it makes the game more tactical to not regen. I can get behind that, but that's not the same as realism.

The British did use Thompson SMGs, but didn't have enough to fully equip most infantry units, so most of them went to Commando units. The Sten was dirt cheap to mass produce, so that ended up equipping the majority of officers and NCOs.

This and Call of Duty Finest Hour were absolutely great. I loved them to death. Even CoD 3 was pretty good but World at War was my all time favourite. I have been crying out for a historically accurate, dark and gritty WWII FPS ever since but everyone seems obsessed with modern conflicts now which, lets be honest, aren't as much of a threat. I had real hopes that Battlefield One would fill that void... It had all the potential, but it fell flat on its face by being exactly the same as the previous games only with a first world war skin on it. If they made a game telling the story of the troops on the ground and tried making it atmospheric (by being believable) then I would buy it in an instant.

Yes, but isn't the controls issue simply goes down to consoles becoming a priority in modern days game development? I mean old CODs and MOHAA were made for PCs only, and today devs are focusing at consoles, hence all the "dumbed down" controls and cover button system.
