I found out about this on my lunch break today. It ruined my weekend. I'm a console player, and I waited years for it to come to Xbox. I play it daily. I'm a pipe welder, and every night after my shower, I can relax for an hour or two every night. They should open the ip to the community and allow mods. The community is small, but we are very consistent.

@ericgraham454 it's completely free if you dont want to spend money. It can be a grind if you make it but you can also just play at your own pace and enjoy the game for free. I've been playing on and off for years and haven't spent a cent on it. I've got basically everything but the Congo and the new ocean spot unlocked and haven't even fished half of the places that I have unlocked because I've just been going through and doing the challenges for each lake, catching all the uniques, and having fun. The game is what you make it.

We've been collaborating since day 1 and they never did anything towards realism. I'm a fisherman and I have 8000 hours in RF4 and they didn't let me join the Player Council. We were with a group of fisherman friends collaborating on discord and we were never listened to, they always listened to the people who wanted an arcade game, which was the minority. A game created for children and not for fishermen. A shame because the potential it had was incredible, it was the definitive fishing game. Open world and multiplayer was a dream. It's a shame that the development can't be continued by another company.

I remember very specifically YEARS ago when Hunter COTW First released and they had a community survey of things we would like added to the game and one of THEIR selections was fishing. I mean are you kidding me, it would have been great to have both in one game. DLC and all i would have paid for it.

@@yeahman9813 to be fair, fly fishing would genuinely be a nightmare for any skill or number of developers. there's way too many mechanics, motions and physics you have to figure out. But, when they released the game with the "STRIKE" mechanic, it immediately ruined the idea of buying the game for me. Starting out with that was basically telling me, "you don't understand what's going on". But clearly, the developers were the ones that didn't understand what was going on.

I put around 700 hours into the game, got most diamonds on all maps but I could feel this coming. I started learning to fish IRL during this time and quickly realized just how much they oversimplified the game. I still enjoyed it but was begging for more in depth mechanics and for them to stop relying on gimmics. I'm baffled at their choice for DLC maps when they must have known they were in trouble. I'm not saying the Spain or Japan maps were bad but they were never going to be the hit an open world Florida map could have been. That alone probably could have bought them more time. I hope fishing planet fills the void and continues to make more large areas that feel comparable to the angler maps but with the much better fishing mechanics. I still hate the grind on fishing planet though, as a new player I feel like I care more about the money than the fish I catch which is a damn shame. Like I love Red Drum IRL but they are bad for progress in FP so they should be avoided. That leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I signed up for the insider program myself but I think I was not chosen mainly because I am not a content creator. But I could post the fundamental things that should have been a must when making this game. 1. It should have copy and pasted the mode layout from theHunter...basically there should have been a story mode per map, multiplayer should have been separate from the story the exact same way as theHunter with choice of optional co-op. 2. There is no indicator for fishing pressure for locations, at least in offline play. There should be fishing pressure and the ability to spook fish. I get that the griefing was an issue but if the game had lobbies like theHunter than we would have more control over who is in the game with us. 3. Methods of fishing are lackluster. There is no lure immersion, the lures have no visual action. 4. Not being able to move and look around more freely off boat/on land while fishing is something all fisherman do. Surveying the waters and surroundings is very important when fishing not just for immersion but for skill and even safety. 5. Fish AI and spawn locations are not true to life. Fish never spawn in places like you would expect...like on points, lay downs and structure for examples. The lures are not really true to life made to target the right fish in some cases as well. For example, in most cases you will catch a bluegill on a worm or bread almost all the time. It should not be more difficult to catch a bluegill (or any sunfish for that matter) than a lake trout. 6. Some of the fish do not look right. The lake trout for example, the head of it does not look that great and is too fat. There are a number of genomes (sub species) for lake trout and I guess the closest the one in game resembles is the Lean genome. Where I am from Redfin and Siscowet are most common. I just think that the lake trout in game have heads similar to pike but with a short snout. They look like the model department took shortcuts.

Expansive Worlds is far from infallible. People always seem to forget that they inherited the blueprint for theHunter from emote studios, who were the original creators. COTW has few mechanics that aren't heavily influenced by either theHunter Classic or other hunting games from the recent past. The need zone system has heavy shades of Cabela's bgh pro hunts, and that in and of itself is the entirety of how the animals interact with their environment. In my opinion EW is very lucky that their competition in the hunting genre is so poor. Unfortunately for them their competition were the ones with a head start in the fishing genre. And they failed to make a game that was of high enough quality to overcome the lack of content, then proceeded to try to make up that lack of content without increasing quality while also hiding this content behind a paywall. Primal was abandoned, their mobile game fell right out the gate, now their fishing game has failed. Even cotw was heavily flawed at launch and still is not perfect. Many things in COTW would have been better if they were as they are in classic, some animals have weird weights and scores that arent realistic, tracer arrows are very dim in flight, scent sprays are borderline useless, animals stay in one place for 4 hours at a time which makes stand hunting useless, and the animal's schedules are too predictable which leads to the "grinding" culture we see today. In the end it was the things that were brought over from classic saved COTW. truracs, getting rid of quick kill and consecutive harvest, water fowling rework, trophy lodges, etc. I've yet to see anything from EW that proves to me that they can make a new game succeed from scratch.

This is so accurate. The game could have been amazing. They should have taken notes from dovetail. How you ain't gonna have trolling motors, electronics, and more lure and gear choices?!?! These guys don't know anything about fishing though unfortunately. They should have reached out to more knowledgeable people to help out. Sad to see it die, but some things were just never meant to be I suppose. I really want someone to make a hyper realistic simulation style ice fishing game. That would be sooo cool to see and play.

I just recently downloaded this game, and I have never played any kind of game like this before. So far, it's been alright, I just finished the entire exploration of the map. The simple fishing method isn't my biggest problem problem. It's the lack of setting up your fishing rigs. And the second thing I didn't like was the lack of interaction with anything at all. It would have been nice to touch or pick stuff up like rocks and or wood, open doors to explore some of the buildings and deeper more involved mines to walk through. And I would have liked to see us to be able to use cabins for speeding up Time, cooking eating saving the game, a place to display your trophy's

Great video. Really highlights the reasons the game failed. I feel same way you do. I really expected this game to last longer and improve over time. The development for features was always lacking. The focus seemed to be purely on maps and fish. With what you said about the engine not being able to handle features they want to add, i wonder if this was also part of the reason they stopped development. If they can take what they learned from this onto a new engine they could create something really good. The problem is i dont have much faith in them because of how they ended things with the angler.

This was my same opinion about Call of the wild. I played The hunter in 2009, loved it so much I have about 5000 + hrs in it. When Call of the wild Beta started and I was excited to get get in. But from the first video I was a bit skeptical, if that they were going for a great hunting game agian. We as the community that build up around me playing Classic, wanted Classic with better graphics. But even in the beta and I knew it was a broken mess of bad ideas. But I had high hopes this is Expansive worlds a company that brought The hunter. The reason I had to share one of my first hunts in that game to the world. Beta was a buggy mess I shared my input. When it released, disappearing animals , tracks and then appearing animals like from star trek getting beamed down on me. Then the major issue is animals felt like they were attached to a leash. So scare one or shoot one. In less than 15 minutes they would be right back almost to the same place. This went on for a year. ... They made promises of fixing things but always followed up by look a shiny thing we are adding! But then it wouldn't get fixed. It was buy the new map or new gun pack and not fix the major issues with the game. I took a year off from playing. Came back to the Mexico map I had animals frozen that would not run.... It took about 10 hrs for me to put the game down for another 3 years. I just have no passion to play the game.... after 1k hrs. ....... I played The hunter classic not long ago during hunting season. Went out for turkey had a great time. If they would just upgrade a few textures to modern ones I would be happy. But I feel its about money not game play which is why they are not doing so well. Like a lot of game companies nowadays.

Trophy lodges created my interest in theHunter COTW, then great ones killed it. In my opinion, it's an arcade game of killing hundreds of animals to spawn something special. Hours and hours of 'playing the system' to try and win the lottery. Seemed like a dumb use of time in my opinion, it's why I stopped making videos about the game and moved to fishing games. theHunter: Classic with current gen graphics/etc. would have been sweet. But I think they knew to gain a wider audience, they needed to simplify the game... at the cost of losing people who liked the original more.

It isn’t THAT different from The Hunter, which is also much more approachable and casual than highly accurate hunting simulation, like ‘Way of the Hunter.’ The formula just works better there. And it helps immensely that once you’ve gotten your toes wet shooting some deer, you can expand your experience to other areas, like duck hunting (which is what keeps me coming back to it now).

Once in the past, i suggested adding fishing to the hunter call of the wild. At that occasion (was a steam discussion) i was mostly criticized and told "IT'S A HUNTING GAME. NOT FISHING!"... I think it would have been a way way better choice.

I think the issue is that the game engine just wasn't built for fishing. As an example, the most crazy physics in that game is an arrow flying through the air. No where near what would be required for the physics of fishing line, the reaction with water acting with density and current... they just didn't have any of this in mind when they built theHunter. So it wasn't that they didn't want to combine hunting and fishing, I just think they literally couldn't even if they wanted to.

This game was doomed from the start, these devs have no knowledge of fishing and didn't respect the fishing community enough bother learning. When I see how the character holds the fish and then the weird sizes of fish, I knew this was a joke. Now I understand that fishing planet didn't have many of the features it has now when it first released however moving forward any new fishing game must see that games like FP and RF4 have set the standard, you cannot release a fishing game without having what those games offer. Also let's not kid ourselves here, theHunter classic is an amazing hunting sim, COTW was made bigger by content creators that manipulate the spawns of the game, they aren't hunting, they're just farming great ones. The fact that EW threatened to take away your partnership just for trying to help improve their game really tells me all I need to know about them....

I wasn't shocked at all. After I hit level 50 and got the 99lb baitcaster, I got bored with the game. The game only came to be, because people playing the hunter wanted fishing. There was never enough of a player base interested in it. Also, the devs are to blame. The hunter devs are constantly putting out surveys asking for feedback about what new maps or animals we want. The Angler devs never did that. They were asked for years to give us trophy lodges. Having fish variations made zero sense without having a lodge, or atleast an aquarium to put our catches in. We asked for an ocean map for a long time too. Which would have saved the game if they actually listened to their player base and implemented it.

I dont know if its just me, but my RX6600 is struggling to run this game, I have this on low and barely reaching 60fps. Not sure if my hardware is enough or what.

To be honest.. if they want to give up on this game. Then why just shut down. Sell it so it can be made better. As you said. The lack of fishing passion wasn't there from the developers sadly that is seeing. But the game was beautiful with it's visual. Minus the water. The water never looked as realistic as its environment. Perhaps if they dropped there so called own graphical engine and step up to Unreal Engine 5. This game could had more to show but sadly. It didn't and water and gameplay never was ever fixed even when they were given in how to. Hell I even made a water shader for them that was realistic enough. But that just lead my in getting banned. It is what is it.. I bough all the DLC for the game last year for Halloween. I was sad to see the new map with is crazy boundaries. You drive too far and the it just spawn in the other direction. 5 minute drive on new map and you reach the end. The map as unfinished to be honest. It was pushed to make a quick buck and with the shutdown prove to me that's all it ever was. A way to make more money. A money grab all it ever was.. I'm sad in ever buying into it but I did cause I love fishing and love the adventure this game had.. The most breathtaking scenery you can ever see in a fishing and that waterfall in Golden Ridge was like a beautiful art. But again that's all it ever way.. Thank for giving us this video. I'll just stick with Russian Fishing 4.. Where I be since 2018.. Again thank you.

An issue with both CotW and The angler is the devs aren't knowledgeable enough on the most subject matter. Hook size, lure colour, retrieve, weapon classes, ammo types. You name it, EW's devs NEED to start consulting more knowledgeable people and even professionals should they wish to compete with other fishing/hunting games.

think i have 90 hours or so in it, don't regret buying...walking around with a seemingly hobbit view of the world, it really did feel as if you were 3ft high at times, not to mention the strange distance perception where you had a 100ft of line out in a stream that appeared 20ft wide. The "big world" selling point never worked its magic on me, it's not how irl fishing is for most of us and I'm not interested in land when fishing anyway. The fishing was trash as well, for most of the game's lifespan it was down to the game as far as casting distance, not the player. A handful of lures and baits even after 2 1/2 years, they couldn't even add leaders. There may have been a very small crossover of players from FP to the Angler, but everyone I know who plays FP regarded it as a joke of a game and the same, if not even more mirth for RF4 players. I did think it may have survived with enough of an audience from those who have never fished irl or never played a fishing game, just wanting a very casual but pretty arcade game, but seems not.

Expansive worlds doesn't care one bit about their players, community, or even games for that matter. All they are are a bunch of graphic designers who just wanna design pretty landscapes. They should honestly allow their company to be bought out and front themselves as a design company only for other companies that actually wanna make games.

Well there goes any further support to this company for any future titles, Once burned twice shy. Maybe the Way of the Hunter Team might bring something out, good time to jump on the community from The Angler. Good luck Expansive Worlds and Avalanche in keeping your player base!

I tried it and immediately dropped it 😂 fishing planet just has better control for cast placement and ui plus lure variety and its kinda sad the freemiun did it better than the full buy to play game. I loved like trophy bass or cabelas type fishing games as a kid and those just did it better too then cotw

Soon as I seen black screen getting in or out of the Jeep and the player was backwards facing I knew it was cooked 😂 tried to kneel down and wouldn't let me cast and the character stiff as a board moving entire body side to side for twitching bro what even is this? They couldn't even hide it with FP perspective crazy.

What?! I'm currently playing this game. Booo. Just shoot the guy that keeps calling me buckaroo, and the game is gold. In all seriousness though, the whole leveling up thing needs to be nerfed. It's not realistic. And every lure should have SOME chance of catching any fish (again, just like in real life.) The only 'leveling up' should be you and your ability to use the right equipment, in the right area, in the right way, etc. Also fish NEVER tire for some reason. And the boats are SLOW. You also can't troll. Yeah.. there's a ton to update/fix/add. So sad. So much potential :( I was sooooo pumped for this game too.

I've played Fishing Planet and the Angler and I prefer the Angler. Sucks that they stopped development.

I played Classic, COTW and Angler. Let's face it EW don't fix many of their bugs and make improvements. Angler is the worst for that. I quite player COTW after a couple k hours as it became to much of an arcade game for me. Classic is better. Angler had so much potential. I really have been frustrated with EW as a developer for years. Good video Bo.

I've only got to play it once, and that was on the day of purchase, played for about 4 or 5 hours, so I seen alot of things you were talking about, I had it in my head, that they were working to fix things and would probably see some improvements in the next update, but after hearing you, going to the game, just seems like the excitement is pretty much headed out the window, and besides that my gold needs worked on in The Call Of The Wild anyways ! It's like you said, they should of just made it an add on !

If you write a negative review on steam about the hunter. The "developers" will respond to you with some BS just for damage control. You give them constructive criticism about they're product and they immediately try to shut you up.

If there's one thing that EW has ALWAYS gotten right, it's the music. But seriously, it's a shame to see but I can't say I'm surprised. It's one of those games that sits in my library, the one that's fun to think about playing, but when I actually play it, something is just missing. I'll catch one or two fish and quit. It doesn't have anything to keep you invested or entertained.

@@BoAngles And much of Asia. Still, RF4 is quality over quantity, and will still provide a player with a longer term challenge than FP, nobody has trophied every species in the game. Chess vs Checkers I guess, both are fun in different ways.
