Personally, to get 4 more yards consistently on a new driver is pretty impressive. Technology has greatly improved the equipment over the past 10-12 years, so to get that much more yardage is quite a feat. More importantly, as you mentioned, being more forgiving over the whole face is more important. Great review, Rick!!

Thank you for finally addressing the forgiveness aspect. It really annoys me when people say the max distance not changing means new drivers aren't really new. They are pretty maxed out on how fast the can make drivers. Now, they are focusing on increasing your average drive distance, not max distance

I just switched from TM M6 to Epic Max. I am 56 not in shape with less than stellar swing speed. I hit both drivers on trackman. The epic was 20+ yds longer consistently and the mishits were less skewed. a 2 club difference for any golfer is a great thing. The distance difference has carried to the course as well. I am seeing parts of the fairway i have never seen before.

I used to be a callaway fan Rick until last year when I tried the mavrik. I took the plunge last year and bagged the titleist tsi3 and I'm glad I did. In my view this is the best driver I have ever gamed and my first ever Titleist club. This will be staying in my bag for years to come I love it

Just bought the Epic Max LS today, upgraded from the 2017 Epic ironically. Tested the Ping 425 and new Sim low spin options. This driver got my RPM down from 3950rpm (not a misprint) to 2200 rpm. Now carrying 30 yards further. Pay the money and get fitted and love the videos as always Rick Shiels

My weakness has always been drawing a driver on command and by how much. Put the Epic Max in my bag and played first round with it today. It's EPIC! It's the most controllable driver I've ever owned by far. I shot one over par today and I credit it to getting the ball in the fairways 90% of the time. Draw, fade, frozen rope! If I missed the fairway, it wasn't by much. When you drive it well, it builds confidence. I swing about 114 and it would carry 285+/- and roll out to 300 in most cases with draw swing, a little less on the fade. (70 comp ball) Can adjust from 11* to 14* loft. Played it in default 12*. Came to find how to change all the shaft adjustments to fine tune to my swing. Great video as usual.

Most people don’t realize that drivers aren’t getting better year to year because they can’t get better. With the current rules of golf a driver can only have a smash factor of 1.50 (ball speed divided by club head speed) which all the current drivers have. So the only way to get more distance is by gaining club head speed which is why in the past few years manufacturers have been claiming their new drivers are more aerodynamic. But they can’t get much more aerodynamic and stay rules conforming and not lose performance in other areas.

It feels like what we are seeing pretty consistently is technology isn't making drivers inherently any "hotter" on the center of the hitting area, but stabilization of the face towards the extremities of the face is getting better. I have long been a user of driver heads around 400cc because I love the visual appeal of a smaller driver head. I have noticed over the last 15 years that the distance of a "flushed" tee shot isn't really that much different for me versus my friends who have a 460 new model. However, I can say that the misses are very significant. I do think the "length" conversation is more centered around the non-pure impact now, if that area continues to improve we are certainly not at a limit of distance capabilities.

Thanks for another great review Rick! Your findings have shown a trend, I love your comparisons of clubs by manufacturer for a decade of releases, distances gain claims are marketing smoke. Went to a locally owned golf store (great staff and knowledgeable) with the hope of finding a driver and fairway wood. Tried all three of these and walked away with the Max. Hi Rick, thanks again for the great review. Thank you for highlighting the fact that the drivers are more forgiving in all the new brand models being launched in 2021. Us mortals need to remember that there are still limitations on how far a driver can go. It would be nice to see you hit the same drivers with a different ball ie new Triple Track and see then what your numbers are. you almost need someone not as good as Rick to show any real improvements. if your club speed is already 111mph, youre not gonna see as much improvement as someone like myself who swings at about 95mph. One thing I noticed about all these brand new drivers is rick still hits a 285 carry, i wanna say on all the driver reviews hes done its been a 285 yrd carry. Came to the conclusion that it really doesnt matter what year model driver you buy, just go get fitted and pick out a driver your eye likes, they literally all perform exactly the same- dont ever get scammed from golf. Im not bashing rick, im bashing the golf world, ive stressed my self out trying to figure out what driver i want next-ITS ALL THE SAME 2018 or 2021 gonna be the same performance. Love the videos and cant wait for new releases !!!

This is why you should never buy a brand new driver. Just wait a year or so for the driver to be less then half the price and then buy it used. Try it for a week or so.. and return it if you dont like it. Spending $500 on a brand new driver that gains you maybe 1-2% on performance is just plain stupid. Im using an M5 Tour from 2018 and still hit it further on average then a brand new sim driver. I got the M5 tour head for around $140 and already had the shaft that I prefer. Dont waste your money on brand new drivers. Thank you Rick for your unbiased reviews on these products, hopefully it will open peoples eyes to what is going on in the golf technology world. Just because its brand new doesnt mean its the best driver for your game. Love the vids! Keep it up. I liked the video before I even watched it.

I was playing the TM SIM and was going in to get the SIM2 and the sales guy was fitting it for me and asked if I was open to another brand I told him “anything but a Ping.” We went through the 3 models of the Callaway and the LS was giving me more ball speed. I don’t hit the ball a mile so I like the LS models to pick up distance on the rolls and I do launch high so the LS helps. My ball speed on the TM Sim was between 134-136 8*-10*. With the Callaway LS I immediately jumped to 140-142 13* and getting a few 260 total distance at the range today. One thing that I believe was the biggest factor is my grip tends to roll the club face down at address and the TM with that inertia channel was tilting the face down even more to where the crown was at the middle of ball and no face was visible. The Callaway has a more sweeping head on it. I was stunned. I went in to buy a standard shaft SIM 2 and left with the Callaway LS with a stiff Hazard Green shaft. The SIM and I have this on my skyTrack app never reached 255 total yardage over the last year on the range. How the Callaway did it in a few swings at the range Over and over total Distance 269’s today was crazy. I like it a lot

Liked the conclusion as it highlights what you're paying for with newer drivers. Distance peaked a few years ago, but forgiveness is now improving so you can more consistently hit it longer.

That's one massive difference I've noticed between my old TM R1 driver and my current Callaway Mavrik. Distance has definitely improved, but the most noticeable difference was the forgiveness and distance with bad strikes and swings. I'd say with a slice the Mavrik goes about 10-15m farther than the R1.
