I'm almost 70 and I had to give up the game for 15 years because of health issues, but with some luck and modern health care, I'm just getting back on the links. My game is coming around, but I soon surrendered to the facts that if I wanted any chance of getting back my distance and compensating for my advanced age, I would need the help of modern golf tech. My old blades weren't going to cut it anymore. I bought the Wilson Dynapower irons and I love them. If my game keeps improving, and I continue to take money off my friends, I might consider trading these irons in for the forged model. Good to hear, the Wilson forged models won’t quite match the distance of the Dynapowers just simply because of the difference in loft. So keep an eye on that if you’re thinking about changing. Sounds like your friends are going to help fund any changes at least!

Hi tested both Wilson dynapower and ping g430s do you think think the Wilson matches the ping as in quality’ same sort of distance with both ,ping certainly are more expensive

Yes, arguably a slightly more sophisticated slick presentation to the Pings than the Wilsons but the Wilsons are still nice looking, great value compared to lots of other things.

I had the opportunity to play a round with a full paradym set driver and all. The irons feel great but I did find myself fighting the offset on the long irons. I don’t really like the look of them. I think it’s the color scheme because the profile is nice and compact. It’s hard to deny they are great clubs and the power lofts make you feel great bombing a 7 iron 200 yards. I feel like they’re making these sets to force people to get hybrids earlier in the set because of the lofts, making you spend more overall. Maybe I’m just a cynic.

I kind of agree on the looks side of it, the irons and the woods don't inspire me much but thats just my opinion, other people might love the looks. You may be right about the hybrid thing. It is a bit harder to hook long irons so maybe thats why the offset doesn't register as much in those.

Why are you quoting total distance ? Does that matter with a 7 iron. Isn’t the ball data more relevant - spin, height, decent, etc. so it rolls 20 yards. The roll is based on ?

I've had this discussion a few times with people. The full distance is relevant for me playing on the courses I tend to play on. The ball lands at a certain distance, takes at least one sizeable bounce and then tries to spin and stop. By the time it has done this the total distance measurement becomes relevant. I have been told off for this before and I thought I had remedied the situation by trying my best to quote carry only, because most people prefer that. I will continue to try to speak about carry only, but can't promise I will occasionally slip back by accident. Apologies if this was annoying!

Interesting video. I can’t get my head round the lofts on these types of club. They are ‘game improvement’ but a 7 iron is 27degrees. (That’s a 5 iron) The 5 iron in that set is 21.5 degrees and again that’s a good 3 iron. Do players that need / want game improvement clubs want to look down at such a straight face when they pull a 5 iron? Doesn’t make sense to me but hey, what do I know 😂

It's a very fair point, and I am seeing more and more customers stop at 6 iron now. They just don't have the speed to get the 5 iron airborne, I think we'll see a few more 5 hybrids in people's bags soon and a load of clubs called wedges in the bag too. There's definitely a psychological advantage using a higher number iron and also a shorter shaft is easier to strike better, but yes, people need to think twice about just ordering 5-PW or even worse 4 - PW.

It's a fair comment, but how the manufacturers compensate for the strong lofts is by putting so much mass in the base of the sole, that they to get it to launch higher than that loft would normally be expected to do. What that does, is give those with a slow swing speed a bit more distance on their iron shots, but a better chance of getting the ball airborne than they would with a conventional iron of the same loft.

As a lefty it's hard to find clubs to test and often sets are sold as 4-PW which is OK in traditional lofts. I'm a mid hc and use Srixon Z785s. I swapped the 4i to a 4H so have a redundant club. This would be worse on stronger lofted sets but I guess that's how they make the big bucks....

That's a really valid point. But when you're 70 years old and hitting 9 iron approach shots from 150 yds out, they're heaven sent. I get them dropping in at almost 45 degrees, so they grab pretty well on the greens.

A set of Wilson Irons are near $500 that’s not budget friendly if you ask me.

I don't think you're going to get any major brands with a history of clubmaking and a bit of pedigree much under that anymore. The only way you'll get something cheaper is if it's an old model that's being discontinued and even then, if it's a major brand I doubt it will go much under $500. Maybe in the U.S but certainly not in the UK.

New Dynapower looks really good, big aesthetic upgrade at least. Will test early in January hopefully.

Whats the point in battering a improvement irion at 90 plus mpr swing speed! The golfer these are made for will never get that speed, hence why they need game improvement irons. A completely irrelevant review, when every other reviewer are intentionally slowing down their SS to get a more accurate idea for who the clubs are made for.

Slowing your swing down is one thing but actually a lot of the people using these will crucially attack the ball very differently to a low handicapper, ie. steep and with added loft, which produces a lot of spin. It would be too difficult to start trying to swing like that during a test. But that would be the only real way you could try to make it more realistic ir failing that I'm sure there are some real high handicappers hitting these type of clubs somewhere on KZbin. I was also just having a bit of fun when I was trying to hit it far. Anyway thanks for the comment, because its the critical comments that help improve things in the long run. I will take on board what you've said.

@golffm6924 it's not really fair to say that someone that needs these irions is a straight up higher HC bad striker of the ball either. They are called game improvement irons, not useless golfer irons. Someone in their 60/70s who have been playing for years can be hitting the ball absolutely flush but have a Slow Swing Speed and just need the help in from a distance club. They just want to see how this club performers. Click on the video, then watch someone hammering it on an ego trip for a youtube video. Do you really think this video is helpful in any way to an older golfer who just wants ti see if it's reasonably straight and longer than their current clubs? No I don't think so either.
