I have tested many irons and the test is down to 2 irons. A mizuno 245 and a Wilson dynaforged. Using the same shaft see how each iron is made and how each iron fared in the testing. Which would you chose?

Hi Jim. Based on your dispersion stats and recovery results, I would definitely give the edge to the Wilson Dynapower Forged irons over the Mizuno's. Aim at the left side of the green and fire away!

I currently game the Mizuno JPX 921 HM and would be tempted by the Pro 245. However, the Wilson “Dynaforged” seem to offer a little more forgiveness and I really like the look and aesthetics. I think I personally would go with the Wilson “Dynaforged”

I am a retired PGA Teaching professional. I am 76 years old. Where I worked , we were a Callaway fitting center. So, for the last 15 years I have been a Callaway pro. I am definitely changing over to the Mizuno 245. I like the Wilson, but there is nothing that feels as good as a Mizuno.

There's nothing that feels like a Mizuno when it comes to their forged cavity backs and blades. I still play a combo set of their MP18's and absolutely love them. While the new Pro 245's feel gratifying, they are not near as good of a feeling as their forged clubs. Of these 2 clubs here in the test I actually prefer the Wilson DP Forged better and if I were in the market they would be the ones I choose.

I ordered a set of 245s 4-PW the minute they were available this past winter. Got them with the stock Dynamic Gold S300 Mid 115 shafts. I changed out the grips for mid size grips and they are incredible for me. I've gained about a half a club length (due to the stronger lofts I'm sure) but my accuracy has improved a good amount too. I am very happy with the 245s and can see myself playing them for many years. My previous irons were the Mizuno MP-32 and MP-59, and Titleist 716CBs. They 245s are better than all of them. I was also considering Titleist T150 and T200s and the Taylor Made P-790s.

What I'm about to say might just muddy the waters more. I like the look of the Mizuno a little bit more, but I just bought a set of Wilson Dynapower, and I LOVE them. I'm a few months shy of 70 yrs old and getting back to the game after a 15 yr layoff. I'm hitting the ball now as long as I used to and the forgiveness is a god sent until I find my game again. That all being said, it came down to price for me, being retired and on a fixed income. Thanks for taking the time to read this. I'm a new subscriber who likes your honest, no BS presentation.

I have been playing Mizuno irons since 1994. Started with MP14’s my latest set was the MP 20MMC’S. As a “seasoned” golfer, I was very excited about the release of the Pro line, hoping to gain back some lost distance with the 225’s, as I watched my handicap climb from the low single digits due to age related loss of speed. My thought was Mizuno whiffed on that model. It was bulbous and clunky looking and IMHO felt nothing like the Mizuno’s that I had come to know and love. Consequently, I surprised myself and moved to what I felt was the best hollow body club at the time, the latest generation TM P790. Lo and behold this year brought the 245 ‘s and all those issues were fixed. I am still toying with the idea of going back to Mizuno 245’s. I’ve demoed them many times and feel they are every bit as nice as the 790’s performance wise and just feel better. For grins I hit the Wilson’s at a demo day and was thoroughly impressed. One of the easiest clubs to hit that I’ve ever swung. They did have the same shaft that I have in my 790’s though, which may have a bit to do with that. I tested many, many shafts and settled on the KBS Tour Lites. For me they helped get the longer irons up in the air like the Nippons you mentioned and kept dispersion very low. Personally I would pick the Mizuno’ 245’s fitted with those shafts. I would be interested in your thought on the KBS’s. The Wilson’s would certainly be my first alternate though. Good luck with your decision.

I used the Wilson AI fitting app and the tour lites were recommended. I have them on the Mizuno 241s and hit them great, the distance loss due to the players loft was a bit more than I wanted. Like you I thought the 243 a bit stronger would be a great option

Hi Jim - Phil K from Austin. You built me a set of JPX 921 Forged PW-5i, the 4i is 921 HMB with KBS Max 75g shafts. I like the look of the 245s, and rented a set from Global Golf for 2 weeks. Those were std length (i'm 1/2"-1" longer), with 115g steel shafts. I really liked the feel of the 245s and especially the performance of the 4i - my HMB 4i is tough to get in the air - not true w/ the 245 4i. The Maltby ranks the 245s as slightly easier to hit that the JPX Forged. If I could justify buying a new set I'd go with the 245s. I'm playing with the idea of get the 4i just to start.

I have hit Mizuno irons and some older Wilson Staff irons but none of the newer models and I absolutely loved the Mizuno’s . The grain flow forging process that Mizuno uses I believe to be the difference between their forged irons and other manufacturers. I’ve hit other forged irons from a variety of manufacturers and none of them matched up to the Mizuno’s for that buttery feel. I would love to hit some of the Wilson irons and the Dynapower Forged sound like they might just be the ticket from reviews that I’ve heard. Apparently the price point that Wilson has is well below most of the major brands so that is a very nice bonus when you are an old fart like me and watching your pennies closely. The next order of business when it comes to my golf would be to get tested for which ball would be most beneficial for me. I’m not as long in my advancing age as I used to be and have never had a problem with getting some height on my shots so I definitely don’t want a ball that has characteristics that make it fly higher than others so would like a ball that has a tendency to fly with a penetrating trajectory on well hit shots. The Titleist AVX is a ball interests me and they advertise that it has the characteristics I’m looking for but they are also expensive like the Pro V1’s so I’m hoping to find a ball that is s like the AVX but less expensive. Any suggestions are most welcomed.

Hi Jim, Stan from Central Florida, here. I’ve always been a fan of the Mizuno spinner irons from previous decades. So I gave a try to JPX 921s. My problem with them was that they were too beautiful to use. I didn’t even want to get them dirty, lol. With me it’s how the club feels 😂 after I’ve put the ball out there. Back about 20 years ago, when I could finally afford a decent set of clubs, I chose Ping BeCu ISI irons. Then, tried a whole bunch of other brands. Now, I’ve ended up back where I started, but with one change. I’m now using Ping ISI-K irons (game improvement) irons. I’m older, using a Senior flex graphite shaft and Golf Pride MCC+4 grips. To summarize: While your stats may be slightly better with the Wilson’s, I would suggest thinking about which clubs feel better after the hit. Because that’s when you’re gonna look forward to using those irons. Distance and accuracy is important, but to me what is important is how it feels after you’ve hit the ball.

I have played tried most of the major manufacturer irons and never significantly lowered my scores with any one of them. My length increases were always associated with loft changes or shaft length increases. When playing my traditional lofted irons I know I need to club up one club. I think I can say when taking time off from golf my Cobra One Length irons seem to score better quicker but after several rounds scoring seems to stabilize with all the iron brands I currently play with. I recently regripped and play my old set of Wilson Mendralla irons and shot one of my better rounds this year and their heads are half the size and offset my Taylormade and Callaway irons. I have always felt find the iron head you like the looks of at address but more importantly find the shaft that matches your swing.

Really tough choice. So many good irons out now it can drive one crazy deciding between them. Interesting your remark about the soles on the dynaforged because I found the D9’s to be a bit “bouncy” off the turf. I’d recommend trying both out on grass first before deciding. The 245 are very helpful irons in the 4-8 iron but are practically blades in the 9-GW so something to consider. The Dynaforged are going to be more forgiving throughout the set Also the feel is going to have to go to Mizuno here as the power holes in the dynaforged feel like crap. The 8-GW feel phenomenal but those powerholes add a very hard feel to them.

First off let's address the "Nothing feels like a Mizuno" tag line. In the late 90's when forging houses were closing down in the US due to the demand for cast cavity backs & environmental regulation Mizuno was one of the few companies to offer a forged, carbon steel blade. Payne Stewart loved the US Forged RAM Tour Grind and showed Mizuno reps an 8-Iron asking them to make a set like that for him. Ads from the time show the RAM was GRAIN FLOW FORGED (hosel and blade forged in 1 piece as opposed to forging the head separately and Spin welding the hosel on later, creating a break in the natural metallic grain structure). The clubs were Duplex chrome plated (meaning that there was an underlayer for increased feel). Sound familiar? Mizuno, in effect, reversed engineered the tour grind and released the famous MP33 line based on what they learned. Yes nothing feels like a club that is TRUE FORGED in this manner (whether Japanese OR American). That DOES NOT apply to all the other clubs they make with things like hollow construction or stainless steel faces. Having said that, being as how they are so close I would base my choice on this: "which club is going to increase demand for McGolf custom club services? Like the pros, you should be a rolling billboard on the course. The clubs in your bag should be custom fit for you and provide a talking point to showcase your skills to the public. Which club company supplies a greater variety of components direct to you? Which one allows you to provide a better fit across a variety of skill levels? If both are equal, which brand has a greater markup for you? Final thought. Mizuno has a great following BUT (as far as I have seen) they have almost ZERO tour visibility right now. Yes, PGACLUBTRACKER lists only 3 current tour players with Wilson Irons & 5 current tour players with Mizuno iron sets in their bags. The difference is I DO see Wilson bags on tour but I have NOT SEEN a MIZUNO bag in some time). Wilson is gaining VISIBILITY slowly but surely. Just 1 week ago Brendan Steele won 4 million in Adelaide while (virtual unknown) Martin Trainer tied for the lead at the Zurich Classic using Wilson clubs. All things considered, I give the edge to Wilson.

Since you asked. Go with the Wilsons. But for me I’d consider a good set of Ben Hogans, PTX Tour. Hot off the face, longer, and if you hit well enough, very narrow spreads. Hollow body irons are less accurate for me. And I’m 72 and still hit my Hogan Magnum blades.

Problem for Jim (and me) is Mizuno is less lefty-friendly than some of the other brands in terms of which models are available. 243s are RH only. 245s are available to lefties. I played MP60s for years. As I aged I realized I needed something more forgiving and gave myself a 70th B'day present 3 years ago of a fitting and new clubs. I REALLY wanted the JPX921 HM Pros but only the regular HMS were available to me. The Taylormade Sim 2 Max seemed to fit me better (I kept an open mind). I wish I had waited 2 more years as the JPX 923 HM pros DO come lefty. I made the mistake of hitting them in a simulator and am wondering why I haven't bought them and sold my Sims.

With all due respect to Mizuno, Wilson Staff! That Mizuno feel is about their blades, not so much in hollow body irons.

Dyna forged is what I play but as the other commenter said you can’t go wrong with either one. Dyna Forged straight and 1/2 club longer than what I previously hit

Hi Jim...DynaForged all the way. Tighter dispersion, more distance, more forgiving and way better looks....and probably a lot cheaper.

Wilson fan boy. I currently use the CBs, had the 923 Tours and the CBs are much more forgiving though feel just as good. For your numbers I think that lateral dispersion is more golfer related, but front to back is where the club will show its prowess. The Forged were more consistent and less drop-off with "not so great strikes" that should be the biggest performance metric. Full disclosure: I have a set of D7 Forged which I love, just a little to strongly lofted and not as consistent as the CBs.

Wilson fan here, currently playing TaylorMade Burner Plus Irons, but switching to Cleveland HB Turbo Hybrid set. Not happy even with doing that. My first set was Ram Jr. Senator’s at 10, my second set at 14 started me on the road to being a WIlson Fan, Wilson Sam Snead One Hundreds woods and irons. My third set was my Dad’s 76 WIlson Bullet Crease Staffs woods and irons. I’ve been buying old Wilson blades ever since. Owned a lot clubs in between what I’ve listed and currently playing. My eye has been caught by the New Wilson stuff lately as I want to buy, build or hav3 built what I call my forever set. At 57 as a former Maltby trained club maker I’m torn between the Maltby line up and the Wilson lineup. My decision is which company and what model? Had health issues and lot swing speed and distance. I would say if it’s not Maltby, then the Wilson’s. Your shop is close to me and I have told my wife I may come down and get fitted and have you build them.

I think it depends on your "normal" miss. The 245's seem to be slightly more forgiving on toe strikes (due to all that tungsten), where the Wilson's might be slightly more forgiving on heel and low misses. Even though "nothing feels like a Mizuno", I liked the feel of the Wilsons.... of course that's subjective to every individual. I had a few "jumpers" with the 245's and didn't notice any with the Wilsons. One more thing..... Price..... does that matter? If so..... choose the Wilsons and don't look back.

If you've narrowed it to those two club heads, you've weeded out the clubs with poor distance and dispersion, unsightly looks, lesser feel and so forth, meaning you could put either set in your bag. Question is which set of club heads will provide you with the best performance, the best scores? There you go. Knocking an iron shot stiff is the best feeling ever. BTW, you already know that 2* Upright is a big change in flight direction. Adjust your Wilson Dynaforge 1* upright than 2* upright and see how that impacts direction. Pretty sure it will bring that Dynaforge dispersion group inside the Mizuno's. Also, remember distance dispersion is a big deal as you play more difficult courses with hazards that have to be carried. I believe you said the 245's had a lot more short shots in the 160's than the Wilson's. Final thought. So often I've seen golf buddies lured to prestigious irons and several months later, after scores have not improved or worsened, they've gone back to something that helps their golf game. I've done this myself with a lovely set of Mizuno MP32's. My strike wasn't precise enough for really great distance control. I've also played lesser clubs that didn't suit me either. Finding that just right balance between some game improvement features and performance can be a little tricky. Golf is a never ending search for better shots which leads to better scores and more enjoyable rounds. Good luck.

Tighter dispersion rules the day, Jim. You know what I'm going to say...Lol! The other factor is turf interaction. Is one better than other? I'm sure a few tweeks could dial that in if needed.

Based on dispersion, I would choose the Wilson irons. I don't really get tied up on looks at address, I'm looking at the ball and my target area ahead of the ball that is the bottom of my swing.

Great review would go for the Wilson great looks and that price. Now Jim how would you rate the Ping 530i and Taylormade 790 on forgiveness. I’m a senior 15/16 handicapper and my stats for a 7 irons is 140 yards carry, swing speed 74, ball speed 94 , launch 23 degrees and descent 42-46 degrees all based on game improvement sector. Would love to move to players distance iron but want forgiveness, distance, and feel. Many thanks!

I play the JPX 923 HM Pro and am considering the JPX 923 Forged as the HM Pro is just too strong in loft and I would love the forged face. This Dynapower seems like a more comparable iron to the 923 Forged than the Pro Line. I wonder how that comparison would look? I am curious about that shaft you are talking about. I wish I could test it .....

After listening your discussion and looking at the numbers, I'd say the Wilson is your winner. Slightly longer, slightly more spin, better dispersion, slightly higher, and as you mentioned better on mishits. The feel is a bit more to Mizuno, but if the Wilson feels fine to you, I think they're your winner.

Sounds like the Wilson is your club. It has more speed, more distance more spin and more forgiveness. It has a better front to back dispersion and only barely lost in side to side dispersion. To me, that sounds like more GIR's with longer putts vs being off the green. So are you better with a wedge or a putter?

I would have to see how each one preformed on 3/4 shots and knock down shots to pick a clear winner. My guess is Wilson with the less flexible face will work better

Both clubs seem like a good fit. But looks and feel carry a lot of weight when you’re actually on the course. I personally don’t like a clicking sound at impact, it leads to thinking that impact is off. Or that the club face is damaged. And the reputation of a quality built club means consistency over time. But price does make a difference.

A suggestion...try getting out of your head, into your body and out on the course. Sometimes the specs and simulated performance get in our way. Put both brands of your typical go to clubs in a bag and go out and play your favorite course. Forget about the "performance characteristics" of each club, have some fun. By the end of the round (or sooner) you will know in your gut what clubs you prefer. Look, feel, confidence, sound, some unexplained tug towards one over the other. You will know.
