Thanks for a great comparison. Just got the Steelhead XR's and love them. no problem stopping them on the greens. Can't justify the extra $ for Epics especially when they do not go as far. Distance is a big plus when you get older... 72 yrs. with 10.0 GHIN

Traded in my Mizuno 825 Pros for these. After 4+ years of watching my distance deteriorate, it's nice to get back to the numbers I'm used to. I don't give a whit about the spin numbers. I can tell you this 7 iron stops quicker than my "old" 7 iron and it flies 15-20 yards father. The look is amazing and the feel is acceptable. The drawback is the 5 iron has made my 3 hybrid obsolete!!!

Callaway is just doing what Taylormade is doing...the m2 is 25 degrees in a 7 iron.People keep talking about not being able to stop the ball. Watch the open champonship and see the pros running shots up 30-40 yards on the ground and everyone raves about how this is how golf is meant to be played.I play with a lot of people who struggle to get the ball in the air so if they can pick up 10 or 15 yards they would be thrilled.The shorter club length seems to be the most beneficial thing with this type of club.Most people struggle with their long irons so the shorter length really helps with strike.Keep up the good work Mark I always look forward to your insights.

I understand your comment about the lower spin on this 6 iron than your 6 iron, but isn't the question, "how does the spin of this club compare to the spin of your iron (4 iron?) that goes 190 yards in the air?"
@MarkCrossfield8 жыл бұрын
+Roger Shelton not sure I understand your idea. My 4 iron lands and launches much lower
@codered11278 жыл бұрын
+Mark Crossfield I think I sort of get where he's coming from. But I think he means 5 iron. That's kind of what I would compare it to since my 5 iron is same loft. Depending on the club that delivers similar dynamic numbers at impact. Thoughts?
@stepyourgameupplaya93608 жыл бұрын
when comparing clubs between manufacturers you can't just look at the number on the club. You need to compare similar lofts to see how the spin is different.
@rogershelton37138 жыл бұрын
+Mark Crossfield I'm suggesting comparing two clubs that travel the same distance in the air (in this case, 190 yds), independent of the number stamped on the bottom of them. If this club flies higher and spins more than your Mizuno 4 iron, then it might have an advantage when hitting into a green that is 190 yds away. If the green is 170 yds away, them you probably would be comparing the Mizuno 6 iron to a XR 8 iron, and see how high they fly and the spin they generate. Just a thought.
@MarkCrossfield8 жыл бұрын
+Roger Shelton my hybrid goes this far and the CG of that is very different to this ?
@jporter5046 жыл бұрын
Like many GI irons being made today, Callaway de-lofts the clubs.For example, I find that my Steelhead XR 7 iron is lofted the same as my old 6 iron. Spin is likely more like the old 6 iron. But it is not just a 6 iron disguised as a 7 iron. The ball flight is equal or higher than my old 7 iron. This allows me to play it like a 7 but hit it from my old 6 iron distances.
@golfninja64928 жыл бұрын
The point that not many people seem to get is the lofts in these 'type' of clubs are lower because the heads are designed to launch the ball higher anyway, so peak height is still up there so they will still tend to stop on landing. Perhaps not as much stop, as a more conventional she iron which delivers more spin like my MP4's but these irons aren't designed for players like me. The reason these type of irons exist is to help the majority of golfers who need more distance and also need to get the ball up in the air. Wish people would stop going over the 'jacked' loft issue it's somewhat disingenuous to what the clubs whole design is about.
@philkwon818 жыл бұрын
that is the idea behind the technology and stronger lofts, but having gamed a few of these types of newer irons, i can say that you won't be holding greens on approach shots. the spin numbers are so low on them that you have to play for big, forward bounces. these kinds of clubs are strictly for players that simply do not hit the ball near the center of the face.
@golfninja64928 жыл бұрын
Not looking as a Cat 1 golfer to change to these irons for obvious reasons. But I think the 'jacked' loft critique 'is a bad thing' that you hear so often is somewhat missing the point of who these Clubs are designed for and why. To that a player who would needs helps with strike forgiveness and also distance along with shot height would simply be able to score better if they gave these type of Clubs a go. But I think they are often off put in buying them simply because better ball strikers as a whole tend to talk about 'the jacked lofts' as a totally bad thing, this was really was the point of my first comment. Also if the golfers thinking about using these irons also used premium balls that would to some extent help mitigate the spin, stop, holding greens issue on all but rock hard greens.
@johnnymac22018 жыл бұрын
The problem with the lofts, is it is only marketing. Our 7-iron is longer than ever!!! Yeah, because it's a 5 iron with a 7 written on it. If you say the 7 flies to high as a 34 degree club and we have to deloft it, what are you going to do with the 8 iron that's now at 34 degrees? Maybe we need to rethink iron design. I propose single loft irons. All irons have the same loft, let's say at about 30 degrees, easy to get in the air but doesn't "balloon". Then we get different distances by having different length shafts. Sort of like single length clubs, but backwards. Remember, you heard it here first.
@davidbaker27786 жыл бұрын
golfninja , I have a set of these. People are completely over reacting. Sure a 7 iron doesn't stop like a normal 7. It doesn't have to because you're now using a 9 iron from your normal 7 iron distance. They work fine.

these kinds of clubs definitely fit a certain niche in the golf world, though. someone who can't find the center of the face is going to benefit from a set like this. they'll also probably be able to keep up with better players as far as distance is concerned. i think older players would also benefit.

would love to see them release a set with less offset like the steelhead x-14 series I gamed many moons ago. However those lofts are ridiculous!!!!! absolutely no chance of stopping the ball on links greens with the low spin on them. also just looked at the gaps between the short clubs and the are massive because of the cranking the lofts in the 6 iron that will be used for club fittings to impress the club golfer!
@cace818 жыл бұрын
Callaway's playbook is basically regurgitate clubs from 10 years ago and jack the lofts to market them as "XX clubs longer", so here we go again. I don't want a 6 iron going 2 clubs longer because I'd have to carry 5 wedges, hence why I won't bag any irons built like this. Give me a great looking iron with some quality forging (e.g. Srixon or Mizuno) in lofts that aren't ridiculous and I'll get them dialed in.
@nickblaken57748 жыл бұрын
Mark, would agree spin numbers are low for a more traditional 6 iron. But how does the spin compare with your club that currently goes around 188 yard carry?
@johnnymac22018 жыл бұрын
If the lofts weren't so jacked up I'd be interested. No wonder most peoples gapping starts bunching up around the 5 iron nowadays, the long irons are only 2 to 3 degrees apart, while the short irons are 5 degrees apart. Letting marketing get in the way of what could be an excellent club.

Lofts on these are exactly the same as the 2015 XR irons, so any distance gain over previous model isn't by loft jacking.

Hi mark, you commented that 190 is a 4iron using your current mizunos, what is the spin rate of the 4iron? 4000rpm? . Therefore if your hitting a 190 shot, are you expecting it stop as quickly as your 6 iron at 6000rpm because the number on the club is a 6 or at 4000rpm as you suggested your 4iron might? Intrigued......

+Paul Sylvester I would expect a very different flight. Launch/spin and land angle

Seems as though if it carries and spins like a 4 iron, but has the height of a six iron.........it should be a win. The shorter shaft of the six should make it easier to hit. I'm old though, so maybe I'm missing something.

+Stan Thomas this was my thinking also, I can't see how this could be really be a negative, two clubs that spin identical, travel the same distance but with different height and spin. in theory, wouldn't the club that has the steepest landing angle, roll out less, if both clubs had the same spin?

@thombendtsen3998 жыл бұрын
So when you compare your current 4 iron to this 6 iron what is the real difference? Peak height? I would think that would be a good thing. Would you be stopping it on the green with trajectory rather than spin? I think you should game these and see what happens. C'mon, you always wanted a set.....
@johnnymac22018 жыл бұрын
A good comparison would be the original X-14 5-iron vs the Steelhead XR in the 6-iron, since the specs on those clubs are almost identical. The only difference is the XR is about a 1/4 inch shorter.

Compared to an M2 from Taylormade 6i which is at 25*, they're not jacked at all. Titleist AP1's are at 28*, Mizuno JPX900 Hotmetal or Forged are at 27* , so are they are pumped up a tad but not crazy by modern standards I suppose. If you really want them to play more traditionally order them 2 weak and you still have a really great set of irons, if you're knocking them and you have not tried them, you really need to. It sure changed my opinion of them as here finally is a GI club that does not have a horrible looking top line, or a super wide sole. Great performance in a good looking package, what's to hate about that especially for those looking for some distance help?

Callaway kings of loft jacking. Whatever the cup face does it works creating extra distance which is great but most sets will end up being wedge to 6 as few people will be able to use the lower irons. The other thing then is wedge choice will become interesting as if the pitching wedge goes two clubs further what degree is your gap wedge going to be?
@davidfletcher68368 жыл бұрын
+Dean Mitchell I'm a relatively short hitter and they would tempt me but when your wedge is effectively an 8 iron I really don't see why you would want them. It's an ego based thing, ooo I hit a 6 yeah that's fine I hit a 4 hybrid so what. Callaway market their clubs around distance and that's OK by me as I can relate the fact that they've made every club nearly two clubs longer. The worry is for others who get sucked into thinking they are hitting the ball miles when actually they aren't it's cranked up lofts and cg placement not the individual holding them.

I really don't understand why they can't just say it's a 5 iron. I think it would definitely help someone like me buying a club like this. I'd love to be able to say I am hitting a 180 yard+ 6 iron, about 165M, in reality, you're a pro I am not so I don't think I would see such big gains, but if the club felt good and looked good down at the ball I wouldn't have any problem with it being so jacked up, personally it would help my game as we often play into 2 club winds, sometimes 3, down here. I wouldn't swap the extra distance for accuracy though, so that would be factor for sure.

They should, I agree. Unfortunately though the brands can categorise their clubs however they like. They can call them F iron, Z iron etc if they want to. The Ben Hogan brand went with a smart idea of getting rid of numbers on their clubs, instead electing to put the lofts on the clubs. Unfortunately their business model was poor and they ultimately failed.

Does it really matter what number is stamped on the club? As long as your gap distances are good, who cares. If the 6 iron travels and spins like a 4 iron, use it like a 4 iron. I bet its alot easier to hit then a 4 iron.
@johnnymac22018 жыл бұрын
I think that's where the problem lies, they put have to put 5 degrees difference between the short irons, and 2.5 to 3 degrees difference in the long irons, which screws up the gapping for most people. The 3-iron is 18 deg!!! If this trend continues we're going to have 3-irons with less loft than our drivers.
@tomthebattleaxe8 жыл бұрын
You need to look at distances via loft. I mean you hit my 4 iron loft basically. If you hit the 38* club which I would assume would be there 9 iron or PW. Does it spin around 8-9k and go 150-160 yards. Just because I take a 4 iron and stamp 6 iron doesn't make it a 6 iron. If I was buying that set I would stop at 4 or 5 just because that's 21° and that's a 3 iron for me. No sense getting there 3 which is really a 1.
@terryainscough41008 жыл бұрын
Callaway (and others) seem to be all about distance these days. Is it only experienced golfers who think about control?, we all need the ball to stop on the green if possible. At my home course, these new clubs would be in the rough over the green every time. To get it stopping I would have to play 2 clubs less, and expect it to roll 20 yards onto the green. I think I'll stick with my more normal lofted clubs, distance isn't everything.

It shouldn't matter how "jacked' the lofts are, if these irons give you that distance but you still retain that kinda height, they're gonna land soft anyway and aren't gonna need that much spin to stop. People hit irons onto greens, not concrete cart paths. It's not gonna roll out forever coming in that softly, regardless of spin. As Mark said, all these companies make other irons that are far truer in terms of loft, they're designing these clubs to go far and high. Lower handicappers wouldn't be inclined to play these anyway, and higher handicappers will moan but they need the help so i dunno why they moan anyway. Higher handicappers can claim they're great ball strikers and whatever and will scoff at these lofts, but if you strike an iron so well, where are all the other shots lost coming from? If you can strike a 7 iron well, you can surely strike a wedge well?
@johnnymac22018 жыл бұрын
My problem with jacked lofts is that the short irons and wedges have gotten to the point where there are 5 or 6 degrees of loft between them, meaning that in the scoring clubs you have bigger gaps then with the longer clubs, where there are just 2 or 3 degrees difference between clubs. Just the opposite of what most golfers need.

+Johnny Mac And you also don't have to buy irons with jacked lofts, buy more traditional ones? These aren't marketed to everyone, just because it means it creates gaps where another wedge is needed isn't the end of the world. Sure someone could use that slot in their bag on something else, but even if you stick an extra wedge in, you're still hitting it longer and higher

+Johnny Mac higher handicappers needn't worry about such things, what they should worry about is learning to control their wedges. Henrik Stenson only carries PW 52 and 58. If you can learn distance control you won't need that extra wedge. Golf is an easy game to get good at, if everyone just practiced instead of whining about gapping, it wouldn't be an issue I promise you.

Higher handicappers normally only hit there driver about 180. Why do they seem to want to hit their 6-iron 160?
@jamocleasby77808 жыл бұрын
+Johnny Mac Then you can get rid of the driver? Irons are more forgiving so why not just tee off with a 6 or 5 iron?? Again, if higher handicappers only hit their drivers that far, get rid of the driver and go practice. Or better yet, keep the driver and learn to hit the whole bag well

I think the first were some of the Japanese clubs in the late 70's early 80's, maybe Nickent? There's a good thread on GolfWRX where Tom Wishon gives his commentary on how it developed.

PW is 44 degrees!

6 iron + 26 degrees = STUPID. Wonder what the Pitching wedge is, 40 degrees?? Doesn't quite help with gapping the old wedges does it?

26 derees on a 6 iron!? are you sure they didnt put the wrong numbers on in the factory, then just decided to go with it? These will sell because everyone knows golf is all about how far you can hit the ball.......right? 🙈

All manufacturers are making their new clubs "go further" . It's all a bit if a con. High launch with no spin equates to gig carry but no stop at the end. Even if you choose a 7 instead of a 6, you'll still have less control than if you use a "proper" club with a true loft.
