I call in Barred Owls once in awhile with my bluetooth speaker, its spring here in New Hampshire and the owls have been quite active. Last Saturday I tried to call them in and got quite the surprise when 7 or 8 all swarmed where I was by the firepit. They were all around me with a few very close watching me and they were all hollering loudly, it was an awesome experience and scary at the same time with them swooping over my head trying to find the source of the calls, I’ll definitely have to record them next time…👍

A couple of years ago my spouse and I stayed in a cabin in Shenandoah National Park. When the sun set it got dead silent. In the middle of the night, we were awakened by REALLY loud noise, it sounded like there were monkeys in the trees. The next morning I told a park employee and she got a good laugh. These birds sure make a racket, especially in the middle of the night.

Normal feeling when you hear another individual of your specie call in your territory for hours. This barred owl was hella confused and probably terrifed at the idea of having to tussle with another barred owl, or it was chasing a non-existing mate. Either way, it's pretty annoying shit. Totally understand why the Barred Owl would attack the closest source of the sound that's been taking all its energy and time.

You mean caterpaulting? Like when you catch them and get to launch them

Please don't do this! When birds are reacting to calls like this it is a stress response or an aggression response. The American Birding Association heavily disapproves of using playback to attract birds because it can have significant negative effects on health and well being (stress, distracts birds from foraging and mating, exposes them to predation, etc.) Research indicates that a male bird that hears another male's call increases their stress hormones and burns more calories-- both things which negatively affect their health. One of the principle guidelines to viewing wildlife is to not disrupt or disturb them, and this breaks that rule and causes measurable harm to the birds.
