Hey Chris if you consider yourself an ally to black/poc folks please do jury duty. They rarely pic poc for jury duty because of racial bias so their voices never get heard. And it adds to high imprisonments, fines, and unfair trials that BIPOC have to suffer with exponentially more than wyt ppl. You are privileged enough to have a job where you can take off and not be homeless or in financiaL distress and your voice could literally save someone’s life and help in an oppressive system. I totally get not wanting to go to jury duty, but ugh I wish people wouldn’t try to get out of it just because they don’t want to go. Obviously many people have valid reasons but if you can go, you should. It’s so important. And to echo what other people in the comments have said, it’s especially important for BIPOC allies to serve if they can, as poc are already so underrepresented on juries. You can’t complain about the justice system if you’re unwilling to play this small role in it.

In my opinion, free country . Jury duty is way too much of a responsibility that if you don't go the punishments are way too much. We all got way more important things to deal with and there's always plenty of people who actually want to do a jury duty . They could simply put up ads asking for people to sign up
@allym.44932 жыл бұрын
@@smileymiley1000100 the point is that you are also entitled to a jury if you ever go to trial. That’s the exchange for having that constitutional right. Of course many people have genuine responsibilities that prevent them from going - can’t afford to miss work, childcare, etc. But if you can go you should. The “plenty of people who actually want to go” are likely to be disproportionately older, white, upper middle class with time on their hands who can afford to miss work. That skews the outcomes of the justice system

It is an inconvenience, and almost everyone dreads jury summons. But it is a privilege to ensure fair trial. If we only allowed people to sign up, then we are depending a small pool of people to decide our fate. Chris says he shouldn’t be there, but he is a great ally for different groups of people. Normally love the podcast but this episode left me feeling bad. I totally get the social anxiety aspect, I am the same way, but as a brown person, it sucks that so many people try to get out of jury duty just because they don’t want to do it. Especially if they consider themselves allies of Black and brown people. I understand if you can’t afford to because of work or if there’s no one to take care of your family. But if you truly can do it, it would be great if you did. The making up that you were sick to the worker, who I’m sure is tired of people faking excuses, wasn’t a great look either. Institutional racism leads to BIPOC statistically appearing more in court and being incarcerated, so if you feel that you’re an ally to us, then hopefully if you get another summons you’ll consider going. Maybe you’ve never thought of it this way and hopefully these comments can help you understand that your privilege is showing.

@ultraparanioa2 жыл бұрын
yea the taxes thing…. jury duty isn’t free. especially for people who live paycheck to paycheck like me. you have to be out of work and your employer doesn’t have to pay you. jury only pays you like $40-$80 a day, which doesn’t help cover the parking costs at court, and like rent, groceries, etc, when it could go on for weeks. it’s just kind of ironic you’re complaining when you make more money than a lot of other people and you could do jury duty and still live comfortably while its happening. also if you do wanna support bipoc like you’re so vocal about in almost every video, you really should serve. a lot of them get arrested and sentenced for the wrong reasons and they need voices who will speak up for them in court, especially since there are so many racist people in court who will vote against them on a bias.

he said he’s never had jury duty before so i understand him not knowing how it works and all(i haven’t had it yet either), but my parents taught me this and i thought Chris or someone else might like to know. depending on what the case is, every juror will be interviewed basically so the defendants or plaintiffs lawyers can get a good idea of who they want on the jury judging their clients. they’ll ask about ur job, how you feel about the nature of the case, stuff to just see what sort of perspective you may have on their case and if you’ll be of use or not. my parents advice is to just tell the full truth about yourself and your beliefs so they can get the most honest picture of how you’re going to interpret their defense. for example if it’s a case having to do with law enforcement and you have family who are cops or detectives, TELL them that. let them know that those are the people you’ve grown up around and they may decide to let u go for fear of you having opinions that will work against their client. my grandpa also told me how one time to get out of jury duty he showed up for the first day, the interview portion, and very enthusiastically told them he was happy to be there and knew he could make it as a juror. when they asked him why that was he told them it was because he could sense a guilty person by just looking at them. they did NOT like that and let him go with nothing more to ask💀 so yea hope this helps, jury duty is a privilege and it’s up to us to be the change we want to see in the system so just use this sparingly i guess? ya know if a case just seems too difficult for you to understand or make a clear decision on, or if you simply don’t have the time to be stuck in a court room for god knows how long

Its not that serious yall. Ive been to jury duty. Its just a bunch of middle class and young people sitting around acting like its a freshman college lecture lightly debating some ethics. Meanwhile theres hardworking immigrants sitting in there wondering what the hell is going on. Then they present the case (learning the drama is really really fun) and then they pick a mix of people, again ignoring the quiet and shy working class people who might not speak english well. Young people are left out as well, as they often voice being uncomfortable with the money side of cases (my jury had to decide money compensation for a car accident case, we weren't allow to know about how much insurance gave her, which made the whole case dumb and useless bc thats so important to know, but by dumbass laws were not allowed to discuss in court. So jury duty was somewhat entertaining, but ultimately Chris delaying doesnt bother me at all. I would like to see him go and share the drama, but I dont blame anyone for not wanting to go. I had fun and would probably go again, but there isnt a juror shortage here in Houston, and there probably isnt in giant metropolitan LA either. It would make good content for him to go tho. It was also in a completely different county I lived in. It was so infuriating that I actually asked around about how to get out of it. (I do know now how wrong that is but I was young and felt they didn’t care about the safety of my child or I when traveling) That was the only time I went and I got out of returning from saying I wouldn’t be a good candidate due to religious reasons. It takes a special type of person to even be able to be fit to be on jury duty. I read another comment where they decide if you would even be worth going through with the case. You may not even be someone they would be interested in after being spoken to! It’s worth going at least once in my opinion.

I get not wanting to go to jury duty but if you were to put yourself in the other person shoes wouldn’t you want someone to fight for your rights? if you truly are innocent you’d need people to fight for you! it’s so important to take part in jury duties!

it’s so funny how youtubers like not even a month ago would still talk about aid towards people (their fans) who can’t afford simples things due to the pandemics affect to peoples jobs and incomes and then the same youtubers make exclusive content to only be seen by the people who pay the every month subscription….

Dude I was waiting for someone to say this….it’s like you tubers are making so much on adsense and then asking for money on patreon…..and their followers and making way less working service jobs I can’t

I always fall asleep watching these but then I wanna go back and rewatch it but then I never finish it so then I just restart it basically I end up having to watch each episode at least three times

Ehhh this episode just wasn’t it. All the people giving reasons for why skipping jury duty is wrong are valid - but also? Listening to someone be on hold for an hour isn’t a fun podcast episode to listen to. I’d honestly go back to the rigid format if I were y’all.

I guess chris should do a smoking break. You can tell he's not doing good lately. This episode was terrible and he should apologize for lying about covid and go to jury duty at the next possible opportunity. This is a mess.

When you go to jury duty, during the preliminary selection the judge will ask if you’re fit to serve on a jury. you’ll be able to tell the judge why you can’t attend and they’ll excuse you. Even if you go to the selection you might not even get picked for a trial. The first day is just to select jurors for the jury. You sitting there complaining about how you “shouldn’t have to do it” is a very privileged take, and especially dumb because you may or may not even get picked. And even if you do, most trials last two days. You sit there and listen to all the evidence and then come up with a verdict with the other jurors. It really isn’t a big deal. Also, lying to get out of jury duty can get you charged with a felony. 💀 and you just did it on camera

nah i really hope this comes back to bite him bc it really shows his performative activism if he’s not even willing to do jury duty especially in his position where he can afford to. he has absolutely no excuse to lie to get out and the fact he used covid, something people have died from, is just gross.
