Damn, this guy really does treat everything like a mission. What he's saying is kind of profound though. It's about the ripple throughout the whole universe. Everytime you make a choice, try to see how it would affect everything as far out as you can go when time allows it. The greatest net positive impact choice, is the right one.

@@Astromyxin I see how it could be difficult to do so. It requires you to be in a very specific mindset so detaching from that sort of goes against what you've made your second nature. I also don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. Jocko is a good guy and gives an interesting viewpoint to see things from. He's made that inability to do so a positive in a way.

I see what you're saying but I think this is the wrong way to think about things. If everyone acted in this way it would be a competition for everyone to have the biggest 'net positive' impact. I think a better way of seeing it is that the right choice is the one that leads you to play a harmonious role within your family and society in the best way you can.

looool, i got a story about this....but its too sad so i'll do it short version: employee disrespectful to boss and other employees, tried addressing in private, boss preferred addressing with the 2 ppl (rude person + person who complained) ...boss reached the conclusion that they're ok with a massively disrepectfull environment. I believe the words "yapping too much" were used or something like it.

I see it happening all the time, even to myself out of nowhere...about to leave a job because my co worker out of nowhere keeps doing so and I did nothing wrong... just toxic pathetic behavior that often goes on in the office. If you run into one of these types I just ignore and if needed respond professionally and answer with yes and no. Responding in kind (putting the gloves on) just fuels the behavior

Sometimes a person ends up in a role that is way over their heads. They might need support, counseling or more people or resources. I think that if none of that works, try to downgrade them for a time and get to understand what actually happened. Maybe the person isn't over his head, but has a hard time with issues pressing personal life and affecting his concentration at work. That is also a thing to consider.

This has carried over from my military career and has helped so much. You always told your people before taking them up the chain of command to get their dress and appearance in order and to be prepared for certain questions. This has helped build trust with my employees out here that has fostered a lot of productivity and higher work ethic

Great video. Been in to many companies that do not understand/respect/use chain of command and who had no issues with tossing you under the boss. Current position the chain is pretty much demand and when folks see it and use it well it makes sense. Lets us solve issues at the lowest levels possible. And even bigger bonus is it allows those with little/no leadership to make decisions that have very little responsibilty. Which may sound dumb but it allows us to see who can take leadership. Who can make the call. And who can take the hit if there is an issue.

I agree with the fundamentals of keeping the relationships from becoming toxic but Jocko approached this issue from the military perspective. In many business endeavors you will be dealing with someone who sold an ability/skill set and agreed on a salary for the position. The idea that they may need more help/support can be problematic when profit is the goal. I.E. if you hired in as a machinist you better know how to be a machinist. Many of the tactics to address that individual will be similar but someone who oversold their ability needs to be allowed an honest assessment of what brought them to the conversation at hand. I've seen this scenario unfold more than a few times.

I’ve wondered this. In my opinion you have to exercise extreme ownership and own the fact that the poor performer is still performing poorly on the job. Perhaps they shouldn’t be on the job at all, that’s ownership as well. It’s your team.
@top_r8866

It was defined as a cross functional team, meaning they must work together as department heads to complete the mission. For instance a production manager needs to meet a goal that requires an engineering manager to provide tooling. In this instance, PM should be aware if project falls behind and ask EM what his plan is to address getting back on schedule well before their boss is aware of any issues.

Jocko's answer presupposes two things: - People only fail on their deliverables because of external factors - Teams only need more resources to resolve their problems. I understand the idea of building relationships, but you are going to find a few bad apples that are unsalvageable. To continuously make excuses for their mistakes and bad performance allows these bad apples to remain in the team and affect the team's performance in cases where you are not there to solve their problems for them
@miniscool5613
@miniscool5613 Жыл бұрын
It is not about making excuses for weak performers or keeping "bad apples" whatever the cost. It is about taking ownership of a problem, giving people chances, bullding trusting relationships and a constructive working environment. If people will not get after it despite encouragement, assistance, etc. guess what - they will not only stand out clearly, extreme ownership dictates the leader get rid of the "bad apples" to help the team.

What if the answer isn't more people, but just a couple of people with a high enough IQ to actually understand and then correct the problem? That's all I need, a couple of people to understand the problem, and then actually solve the problem... More people keeps failing how we solve our problem, and they are making even more problems, that we then have to put more resources to, only the original problem isn't solved, yet more problems are coming up, because the people that came to fix the problem, have now created their own problems, that I could fix, if we didn't have the first problem, that still isn't fixed. What should I do then?

I've posted this around and it fits here too. Something I advised my subscribers in the very beginning of my own work day one. The substandard--everyone seems to settle for it now. We have reached an apathy to achieve---not just in this country but the world. But you can look at this apathetic mindset in a different light today. The fact that everyone is so weak minded and so unwilling to put forth effort makes it easy to stand out and excel. Simply put, become the Sheepdog among the docile lambs. If you develop a mindset that would be able to compete with other Sheepdogs you will blow away the competition which are largely not today. And life is about competition, not the participation trophies that they are trying to indoctrinate us with. I hope this helps someone out there and go be GREAT!!----Charles

What about toxic co workers? I’ve worked on projects that are well on plan and ahead of schedule and still get the hounding dictator co worker/manager continuously pounding and hammering people. Leads to burnout, turnover, low morale etc. I’ve always been a fan of work smarter vs harder. Sometimes the smart solution requires a lot of grunt work but not always. A lot of micromanaging is very counter productive. Communication is key always. Everybody should be clear with what they’re doing and asking questions should be welcomed. I’ve worked in places where all that is tossed out the window, toxic .

One thing a successful retiree never discloses is how they got to realize that the key to amassing wealth lies in making sound investments. I purchased my first home at the age of 21 for $87,000 and sold it for $197,000. My second home, acquired for $170,000, was later sold for $320,000, and my third property, purchased at $300,000, fetched $589,000, with buyers covering all closing costs and expenses. Not reaching a million before retirement feels like an unfulfilled goal.

so I have a question to people in the comments. or if jocko sees this and has an answer that would be cool to. I work at a grocery store and the top management has really trimmed down all departments to the point of running skeleton crews. the same person who did that is also a closing manger 2 nights that I close. he is a very controlling micro managing type leader. he used to not dig into every little detail that a department that i work next does. but the last 2 weeks he has physically walked to the produce department and accually directed people and kinda took over. and comes over and says stuff that needs to be filled. and accually one time told a person who had been working in that department for 5 years that he wanted that guy to walk with him on the floor and make a list. it was very humiliating to that guy. and all the people that work in that department know what to do and get the job done. but as a person who if I mentioned to this top management guy how is actions effect people I feel it might make the situation worse. what are you guys thoughts? honestly I have approached him on some other subjects and he uses the term well we need to come toghter as a team player and take one for the team. and he also when he talks to us he goes on and on and on. anyways thoughts, ideas, suggestions would be great. .
@gamingpentagon
@gamingpentagon 4 жыл бұрын
Id suggest talking to him face to face and presenting things that hes done and recommend changing some of his actions or the way he goes about things, micromanaging kills teams in any environment unless its something thats absolutely needed (9 times out of 10, its not needed), not saying be a dick about it, but run it up the flag pole in a respectable manner. Set things out that youd like to present to him (whether it be his actions or words) and tell him how that is affecting the environment within the work place, come up with some solutions, and walk with him from there. Anyone who understands how management or leadership works knows that sometimes people fuck up, nobody is above that, to be corrected is not something to get mad about, but instead to think about and to apply those things to yourself or other aspects of the environment and to better those things.

I think if we go back to the "missed two deadlines, if you miss a third deadline" scenario, I don't think I would approach it that way. I would probably, tell that person that they are too critical and the organization is worried about the bus count (bus count: is a metric used in entrepreneurial organizations to describe the number of people that would have to die or be incapacitated, get hit by a bus, to make the organization dead in the water.) I'm sending over more people to mitigate the risk posed by the organizations dependence on their lynchpin functionality. That's how I would handle it strategically. I think my tactical approach would be to ask if the guy or gal has a family, give him some cash so the souse can pick up dinner for the kids, then give him some money to go out to dinner with the people I am subordinating to him, to get to know each other and talk about how they are going to approach the problem without the stress of it being during a time when they are supposed to be productive.

If the guy/girl is consistently under performing there are a couple of situations: 1. New to how things are done and they want to prove themselves 2. Situation is over their head, but they are stubborn or shy about asking for help. 3. Personal issues that diminish work performance, because yeah, life is more important that menial job tasks. 4. Incompetent because indifference/carelessness/doesn't give a shit. 5. Maybe the project/job/office conditions suck. 6. Maybe you suck as a boss and this employee is more emotional about it (this should actually be number 1 and considered a constant head check for all the bosses to do). Before taking ANY decision, you need to find out where you stand. I've seen many times competent people get fired, because their managers didn't care about properly finding out the reason why they're not performing well at a given time. Then, after the fact, it was too late, and of course, the big ego of the boss prevented him to recognize he fucked up.

so many in the media sound so sick sometimes when they arent breathing right into the mic and my sound engineer ears are sensitive to creepiness and some voices give me the chills, not yours but so many i keep hearing that dont respect i was 12 when i put my own life on the line for my country and fired the winning shot in a war with my mouth like a shotgun that toppled the berlin wall when i was correct when i spoke with the tiniest little voice afraid that i knew the answer and was embarrassed i solved the biggest science question on earth by work id done by my own free choice not even knowing anyone else would ever ask me a question. the whole world was looking in the wrong direction because i wasnt the one pointing anyone but myself in the direction. i told them the answer. i was right, everyone else werent even close they were so far off course because i was the only one on earth doing pentum physics at nine years old in 1986. they were stuck at quantum. i already knew dark energy was hydromagnetism the fifth force of nature. id been further than einstein had been down blackholes before i ever hit double digits. i remember at nine years old at my grandpa smiths house the whole family all talking as i sat on the ground staring at the carpet and working on experiments of blackh. oles out and in and out . i taught myself that day the truth of how galaxies are born agains. my name is christian, weird coincidence. my grandpa smith was a super genius but he never said shit. he never talked but he created beatiful things you could see. thats why i like to type more than talk most the time so my work can be seen by some and by others be heard. ive never had any teachers in my life that were able to teach me the things i wanted to know. nobody knew those things and i had to work incredibly hard to solve both what were the questions and what were the answers. i solved them but not always in any order. which i solved first id then have to solve the other. answers arent always easy to create a question for. im a creator. i have to stare at pure empty space and from the center of the never there ever in the the area of the universe in we call the visible universe id draw them in from an edge where somtetimes not even light from any stars you could see from here had been able to go on the side pointing away from us. and where even the dark from there black holes had reached beyond even gravities furthest influence which is considerably further than light or dark to the hidden row where you and i , u and i would go to fuck if you were a woman and your pussy got wet. fluid. fuck ladies deep. f l u i d e y mess the limited range of digital writing is really sad to me. computers dont impress . computers are capable of things that an idiot could do. thats why its an interface you hide behind. so you can only see the things that the mind of an idiot could get. computers shield you from ha ving to see whats actually going on. your computers hide from you more than 99 percent of the truth. for inteligence gathering a computer is like putting a dog with his head chopped off on a leash so a blind man could drag it behind him as he crossed the five freeway with his hands for feet to feel tire vibrations cause his headphones are fully cranke blasting metallica one. i can not hear , i can not see, all that i feel, absolute terror da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da , rich, super rich, u leashed dog? cause im going for it . u leashed rich dog? east west who gives a fuck which is which ive found hell in omni direction except death and its a nano heaven the kind of rest you never even notice cause when your dead infinity can feel really quick . its not often a man gets to be on both sides of which in what feels like the same body but it happens. if im wrong about having been youll have to excuse me cause i was the one dead so i wasnt exactly taking notes i was just dead and then my body slowly started firing up its organs one by one and if youve been through that before you would of noticed. its the most intensity ive ever felt and impossible to forget with even just a mans head like i have. i didnt sign up for that shit. i will never forgive any man in america as long as i live and women and kids i havent verify ive seen any pure enough to say i believe they still exist. the united states is a disgraced waste and i only see cowards and chickenshits everywhere and am ready to leave or die wishing i did. you realize that to get my respect you would have to go to such lengths id be dead so long youd have to beg your children to keep working for thousands of years to ever accomplish what it would take to make upto me for what you all did??? thats just to get close to what ive already done for you before i turned 42, in the last year i put in a lot of overtime that is beyond anything anything that anyone could ever do in the realm of life. id need you to stay working dead to be security in case god tries to keep robbing me for eternity . i dont think the gates of saint peter will hold him in went he tries to find out where the fuck i went to see if i can find a safe place where i can keep my dick without having to let everyone in heaven keep begging to suck my dick for their prize . i dont believe even in heaven id ever get paid for my work. im hurt, and its bad, worse than you think or have the technology to detect with your decapitated leashed computer digital log.
