Rapper Ice Cube discusses racism, police brutality, what has changed - and what hasn’t - since his iconic song “F-The Police” in this extensive interview with MSNBC's Ari Melber. Melber also raises recent allegations of anti-Semitism against the rapper and actor; the history of hip hop and other music exposing racial injustice; and how politicians in both parties often attacked Black musicians rather than listening to their concerns about policing. The discussion also includes an appearance by historian Jon Meacham, who wrote about Ice Cube and other artists in his book "Songs of America: Patriotism, Protest, and the Music That Made a Nation." (This interview is from MSNBC’s “The Beat with Ari Melber, a news show covering politics, law and culture airing nightly at 6pm ET on MSNBC. www.thebeatwithari.com). Aired on 7/24/2020.

This 16 minute clip was far more impactful to my soul than I thought it’d be. It led me to go & listen to those songs by Nina Simone - Mississippi Goddam & Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit. I’d heard snippets of them before once or twice in documentaries when I was growing up. But I TRULY listened to the words & I’m in utter & complete tears right now how relevant that pain is today. How it was able to seamlessly translate what my heart & my weary soul is experiencing with this social injustice. I’m 33 years old. I paused from working (from home) and got on my knees as I listened to Marvin Gaye - What’s goin on and I wept & prayed. It’s too much hate in this world. Too much. Why do they hate us so badly?? We just want to live & live equally. That’s it. Why?? Why is that political?? My body, soul, and heart physically aches. God help us all.

I think it really just took that long for enough people to walk in other peoples shoes. South Central in the late 80's early 90's wasn't a place that much of the U.S. citizenry could relate to. Same with their experience with the police, it wasn't like LAPD under Daryl Gates. Now it wasn't a nice place by any means- not even close. But with the crack epidemic... people can relate to that now too since pill popping opioids and fentanyl have struck a lot of communties outside of the poorest. Everyone knows that drugs can shatter any community and the families in it.

I was thinking the very same thing. Because you have to protect yourself and your family at sometimes when they are being harmed . Self defense is not being violent, When you being attacked. I was told by my parents and exspecially my grand parents if someone hit you no matter what color you hit them back, not just one time,You keep on hitting them til you think they had enough. But never start any trouble, always respect yourself and other people . I think Dr Martin Luther king didn't want his people to died in violence because they wouldn't win. Not having the proper UNITY formed in a military way. Me myself know what it's like to make sacrifices. It's time out for just balling up like a baby and trying to cover up and take a beating. Being nonviolent didn't work nor help. Granny say sometimes you have to fight fire with fire to make it go another way. Give the devil and his emps a taste of their own racist meds. They would say never fear DEATH. God is in control of how long you live,And how you will die. If you live by the sword you should die by the sword. Racism will only end when you died or this world come to an end. Because of the two spirits, GOOD AND EVIL. It's up to us to choose one. And because of our learned behavior is how we were taught at the home FIRST by our parents is how we turn out to be. Raised to be right and good or wrong and evil.

@@dashaunlipscomb9533 Yes. Even Christianity has been hijacked. So many people call themselves Christians but don't actually follow the teachings of Christ. That's been the case from the beginning. People once used the Bible to defend slavery and keep enslaved people in line. We know now that "slave" was simply a word for servant in scripture. The Chattel slavery they wanted to justify was total evil. There's still a lot of people operating only in their own self interest and masquerading as Christians. Listen, you don't condemn GANGS & the problems Associated to them if you support the music that helps fuel them. Or the people made famous from them. "He sold music with racial remarks to sell songs" = And that's all he cares about. Is that MONEY. Who it effects doesn't matter. in one movie you can hear a group feeling sad because people were burning their records. And then EZ E says,, They bought em. Meaning they got paid. And look at those groups today. dead or in prison for murder. Look at our prisons in America. Jails all over. Full of young people who do not want to work and would rather be a rapper, or gangsters or drug dealers or all of them. Chasing that money is more important than teaching peace and working hard to teach our children morals that come with it.. You will never see him teach peace. You will only see more of the same from all of these so called artist.

He's intelligent, handsome and just straight hard- he's a good father and always been consistent with his position- he's not prejudice and he's not biased - he's down for people that care about life, respect each other and just want to live without being judged. 💛💪🙏🥰 Always love u Cube

This is Ice Cube. Not afraid of truth. He is more intelligent then “some” folks realize. Like he said he’s not the other artist. I love this dude because he speaks truth. He backs up his truth with fact! Stop letting hate infiltrate our community. We are in a moment much like the Freedom Riders mixed with white america. This time BLACK LIVES MATTER is mixed with EVERY culture. Let’s work together, get dolt “45” out and let’s heal America together. Although parts of Europe is experiencing racism of its own, I’ve walked the streets over there and felt safer than here. I’ve spent a lot of time in Germany, France & Italy felt relaxed walking around seeing police at festivals, they spoke, ready to provide assistance if asked. I never felt the same intimidation I’ve felt here. Don’t tell me to go home, I am home. I’m just saying through my travels over the last 4 years plus, my peace was mostly felt abroad. Funny they asked me before the election why do Americans hate Hillary Clinton. They said trump is an awful human being why would you support him. Umm 🤔 I don’t hate Hillary, I’m supporting her candidacy. They said don’t let him get the White House. These are people who knew I was American. Funny “45” turned out to be exactly as they predicted. We are better. Again Ice Cube speaks truth. “Let’s take what’s old, remix and make it better.”

Hilarious lol. But then, other people of color, particularly kids, think "what's up" is how ALL Black people greet and that is not the case. I'm a school teacher so I'm good at checking students at the door with that one lol. That super informal way of greeting someone stems more from the hip hop culture than skin color that's why we have to stop seeing everything as Black and white both literally and fight speaking.

Well in Israel, there are Ethiopian Jews and Black Americans that converted to Judaism, that face discrimination and racism in Israel. Now, one can say that white Israelis/Jewish people are racist towards their black brothers and sisters. Why would the Israeli government relocate Ethiopian Jews from Ethiopia with the promise of a better life, only for them to mistreat them like they weren't Jewish. The media doesn't speak on that.
