We must approach the question of independence for Commonwealth countries with clarity and unwavering determination. It is imperative that historically colonized nations claim their autonomy and put an end to any form of dependence on the United Kingdom. Colonialism and slavery have left deep scars in the very fabric of these societies, resulting in devastating economic, social, and cultural consequences that persist to this day. The atrocities committed during colonization are not mere memories of the past, but tangible realities that affect the lives of millions. The economies of Commonwealth countries, often reduced to remnants by centuries of exploitation, cannot be rebuilt without an explicit acknowledgment of the injustices suffered. Financial reparations, in the form of billions of dollars, are essential to enable a transition to genuine economic autonomy and lasting stability. These compensations should not be seen as charity, but as a necessary restitution of the resources and wealth that were plundered. It is time for the United Kingdom to recognize its historical responsibility and take action to rectify the wrongs of the past. The dignity of the peoples of the Commonwealth demands that concrete measures be taken to support their development. This can only happen through a candid acknowledgment of the crimes of colonialism and a commitment to invest in the future of these nations. Independence cannot be genuine unless it is accompanied by adequate resources to build just and prosperous societies. The path to decolonization is fraught with challenges, but it is also an opportunity to reinvent national identities and build economies that meet the needs of their citizens. By investing in sustainable development, strengthening education, and supporting infrastructure, Commonwealth countries can finally begin to heal and thrive. The time for independence has come, and it is the responsibility of former colonizers to participate in the renaissance of these nations as sovereign entities. The moment has arrived to transform the shame of the past into a future of dignity and justice.
@toffy195228 күн бұрын

Very fair point, and identifying some of those who could/should be held accountable.

Cool, they should pay the 40000 sailers families that ended slavery

It was Africans and Arabian’s who sold them to us in the first place so make them pay, absolutely hilarious that this is even being discussed. We shouldn’t give them a damn thing

Talk of reparations are ridiculous. We owe nobody anything in monetary terms.

Totally absurd that people who were never slaves wanna be paid reparations for by people that never own slaves.

Its unbelievable this. Why would people who werent alive pay money to other people who werent alive over something that every culture has been a part of? Its madness

I wonder if the 'History not being ignored' will include the West Africa Squadron, 1808 - 1867, or the Slavery Abolition Act, of 1833 ? I suspect I already know the answer to that.

How much financial aid have these people gotten from the UK ? Including from welfare.
@Comfortzone9929 күн бұрын
My ancestors were not involved in slavery and probably 99% of the UK population was not either .. The English living on the streets trying to get food would have probably jumped at the chance to go to the warm West Indies pick some sugar and get regular shelter and food with it.
@fredmercury131428 күн бұрын
Arguably the English at the time _were_ slaves. A lot of them ended up joining the Navy and dying in huge numbers, just to be able to get something to eat. There were people of the time who claimed that slaves in the Caribbean had it way easier than the average Englishman, in England.
@neils488628 күн бұрын
The UK should pay whatever the Caribbean countries want in reparations for slavery, provided that the Caribbean countries pay the same amount plus £1 for the UK abolishing slavery (which was happening for centuries before the UK was involved in it).

Sounds like a fair point. Shouldn't be too difficult - it'll be Europeans conversing with Europeans to find a solution. Britain was happy to do this when they compensated the owners of enslaved people rather than those actually enslaved. Doesn't negate Britain being accountable to the Africans enslaved, does it?

Have we not already paid compensation in the amount of £20M that nearly bantrupted the country in the 1800s and only finally got paid off in the last 20 years.

And the removal of Europeans who colonised those places should also take place, right, for balance? It's not a coincidence that the national language in Australia, Ghana, the USA or Nigeria is English, rather a consequence.
