It would’ve allowed the Broncos to petition to void Russ’s contract. I’ve been saying it the whole time. Payton was trying to tank for draft position and scapegoat Russ for it, and coax Russ into doing something that would allow the Broncos to snake their way out of his contract. It was obvious. The snide remarks to the media. The snatching away of Russ’s head give and parking spots. Those perks didn’t bother his teammates, btw. They used his office too! Leaving him in at the end of the Miami game. Making him check down every other pass play with the vanilla offense. National television and he blows up at Russ on the sideline. And they tipped their hand when they see that Russ can win games for Payton, and try to force him to defer his injury guarantee. All a setup. They benched Russ because they wanted to guarantee a loss of at least one of the final two games. They wanted to tank!
