Agreed. This album came out in1986 (?). In summer of 86 in Europe. I did get the album then. I did like this song as one of the best of the album, I was 17 yo, just 6 months shy of 18. Now not 20 years but 35 years have passed. I hear this song and it fills me with emotion due to nostalgia as the song hits me in the face with what Bob is singing. My older brother got me into Bob Seger in the 80's. Later periods of listening to Bob Seger alternated between Dire Straits / Claption / Tom Petty. Still Bob Seger always comes back!! ;-)

I’m 31 brother. Play for a singer who primarily does pop stuff as a hired guy. She let the band do one song in the set recently to kind of show off something different. I talked them into this song and our bass player who’s the oldest guy on the stage sang it at 46 years old. I like a lot of guitar stuff. There’s flashy stuff like Erruption. But this to me… This is the song and the guitar solo. I played this note for note while looking at the crowd rather than the fretboard. Letting the slide talk and just watching a room full of teens and early twenty somethings all stopping and watching and just taking that sound in. Most of them did not know a word. Probably had never heard the song. But for that few minutes that room got to just experience it. Had a kid come up to me after the show and ask me what that thing on my hand was I was using to play the solo. I explained it to him and he told me he had recently started learning guitar. And how is new goal on guitar was playing that like I did. I told him no your goal should be to play it like Seeger’s band does it. Have no doubt my guy the music lives on for those who know where to find it and know to enjoy it. I think the irony was not lost on me that the first time I heard this song was as the kid at the beginning of the song. And now I’m hitting my 30s and I can identify with the later part of the song more

Neil Young, Bob Seger, Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Tom Petty, The who, the stones, peace Sunday, further festival, CSN, and so many more. That crap they call music today is just hideous noise!

Back in 1978 I was 21 years old living in New Castle, PA outside of Pittsburgh. Attending Penn State and working hard ass jobs in the mills in my home town in the summer and fall. I worked a hard job 7 days a week pushing big bundles of tangled metal chip balls down a chute so the crusher could beat them into small chips and conveyor them up into a rail car. We filled 2 rail cars a week. Barry and me worked a sold 7 hours a day pushing and pulling chips in the hot humid summer. Weighed 185 lbs and wore 32 waist jeans. Took home almost $375/wk in 1978 (when a six of Michelob was $2.25 and a ticket to see Pure Prairie League, The Outlaws, and The Eagles at the Tomorrow Club in Yougstown for less than $10). Had a 1971 Ford Econoline van that we took hill climbing into the quarries and skinny dipped with the girls in the evening drinking beer and carrying on. Seeger Live Bullet always playing in the cassette deck with a power amp. Went back to PSU hard as a f'n rock every year with a full bank account. Partied like a maniac for 6-9 months and worked in the mills again the next summer. Did it for 5 years until I graduated. I am 63 now. Once when I told this story my still hot wife said "You act like those were the best days of your life". I told her they were. She got pissed and never said that again. Those times were great and rank up there with the best. Rock on kids. Rock on. Study hard. Work hard. Play hard. Be fair. Be kind. And stick up for others that can't stick up for themselves. Time flies by. Live life and have no regrets.

I’ve been playing guitar for 35 years semi professionally but just started seriously playing slide only a couple years ago. I practice only slide guitar at least 4-5 hours a day and am starting to see it pay off, although I still have a lot to learn. Much as I love Segar, this song never hooked me until I actually listened hard to Vito’s solos, especially the last one. Took forever but now I can play it pretty decently. Not as good as this guy, but not too bad But Rick Vito’s original version is honestly so smooth, passionate and moving that nothing compares. Rick should get free corvettes for life. Those commercials might’ve made Bob a fortune but they kinda made that solo so well known that people may not realize just how incredible it really is.

Heard this many times before but last night it brought tears! Lyrics, voice, guitar/slide, all of it.❤️ Crazy thing is, my close friend met him in his younger recording days. He was doing carpentry work on a home sound studio that day. His brother is also a musician, whose former partner, Pete Carr (RIP), actually played the epic guitar solo on Main Street. Funny how so much is connected. Wish I'd seen Bob perform live - always a chance, right? 🤞🎶

This song still gets to me deep inside. Reminds me of the first time I saw Bob Seger in '72 at a small festival in Oregon IL. He opened for Brownsville Station and Electrified the crowd. I just KNEW that this guy had a LOT MORE to offer and was going to become a HUGE ⭐! He DID INDEED.

Awesome song, I've always loved it. It reminds me of being a young carpenter and then looking back over my life as a 59 year old contractor.

Bob Seger WOW ! Still...... I was 13yrs old and my sis and her husband and about 10 or so other friends had tix to his concert. I was being baby sitted so their only option was to take me along... It would be my 1st concert. The memories are still vivid. Needless to say he's still my favorite singer songwriter. I'm 53 yrs now. He toured again about 8 yrs ago here in B'ham. Grandkids came first and I had to miss it. My heart broke. I see myself in so much of his music and lyrics. Like A Rock I identify with most now. I love me some Bob Seger. It's always my cleaning music. And I always end up dancing. 😏

I can envision the precise evening in my life when this is how I felt: a hot summer nite in 1976. This song always takes me there.
