Dan, is quite right. One doesn't need fancy tools to do quality work. This videos are a testament to what a person can do with basic power tools on a job site. We like Old School. THUMBS UP!

Definitely Old School. I'm 79, but I remember as a kid watching kitchen cabinets installed in a house. Nothing like today's cabinet makers. They were built in place, piece by piece. Just goes to show, you don't need all today's special tools to do the job. Just use all the skills learned from a lifetime of doing the work.

I watch these fancy channels showing DIY cabinets with 25k in tools. But this is a lot more simply but look as great as anything I’ve seen. Makes me want to build my own.

Dan I’m a year older than you……. I keep going and once in a while I really think about buying a new tool to make my life a little easier sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t…….technology is so far advance now it’s incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!thank you for the trick and straightening out the board,,,,I like that a lot,,, I wish you’d make a couple of push sticks out of some of that Oak-that Andrews got kicking around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!every time you put your fingers near the saw… I wouldn’t look,,,,,,,familiar breeds content… I did 32 years on the railroad as a conductor freight and passenger The older you got the more familiar got with things the sloppy you got,,,,,, I was fortunate enough to leave early!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if I had stayed don’t know if I’ll get out there without going out in a bag!!!!!!!! feet first i’ve always loved carpentry and tinkering with all kinds of things always had a business on the side plus working on the railroad really always enjoy the smell of lumber and the satisfaction with the end of the day either cutting stair stringer the first time and only!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!NO LITTLE STEP AT TOP OR THE BOTTOM cutting roof rafters always enjoyed that…… keep up the great work enjoy the channel along with your son and Andrew your friend Samuel bacon

It reminds me of my father who worked all his life as a cabinetmaker and working in the old style is very good. It is not worth investing money in tools that are rarely used and without learning the tool it can be more complicated than working with the old one.

I hope that you will finish Andrew's house soon, so you can get back to your own. I'm so looking forward to seeing you living in the home that you both built. Amazing!!

Doing it the “old way” is called experience and expertise. I lost a very good friend just a week ago, 75, who was a Navy Submarine veteran who showed many of us that “old way” many many times, and save my a..ss a few times. He actually would make a tool to do his expertise in the restoration of classic Corvettes that made the job much easier. He would not expect anything less than perfection. Now lost his experiences forever those of us will miss him til our time to cross the line. Rest in peace Jim.

What a professional woodworker, Mr. Wheeler! Love the way you work and do things with two vise-grip clamps, a good aluminum level to guide your skill saw, pocket screw jig, etc. I can see that your results, with a bare minimum of fancy tools and work space ( all I have is a second floor balcony in an apt building- 14 carpeted steps to haul my plywood up to the balcony, across the living room, so I appreciate how you do things; I have no training except high school wood shop and I just turned 73; I want to build very cheap self-standing cabinets using the cheapest 3/8 inch plywood I can buy and spruce 1x4, and I will do it. Not as good as you do, but it will do.) working outside, on gravel, etc. and you make cabinets from old wood! I can see that your results are beautiful! You and Mrs. Wheeler hang cement rock from a steel ceiling, she mud's, sands and paints it...and it is beautiful! Love your attitude and your get-up- and-go mentality. Thank you both, for your informative and entertaining videos. :)

im glad to hear of another like minded person on the tool situation lol....years and years ago i sold most of my pro power and air tools since i no longer needed them. but a few years ago i decided to build another muscle car and i had to invest in some power tools and special tools for engine and trans work as well as frame and welding, so i thought about it and decided to buy much much cheaper tools...and hey they worked fine and i got the job done, rebuilt engine and trans and runs great to my surprise being my last built was more than 20 yrs ago lol...so instead of Snapon and Mac tools its now Harbor freight lol...i cringe at the thought but they worked just fine...i also sold most of my wood working equipment and had to re buy more and i did the same thing no more Dewalt or Milwaukee tools mostly Harbor Freight again. and like you im 68 yrs old and it made sense to me as well. oh and BTW, retirement sux!! good luck to you and i love your work and how you do things! and now...im going fishing!

Great work, Dan. Love watching your wood working skills. I am in my 70's Planer/joiners have been around for a long time. I use mine to build cabinets esp joining up "one by" stock to make flat panels for door faces. It is a must for making the joint completely disappear, Mine is heavy Craftsman 6 1/2 " model I have had for 30 plus years as well as a Craftsman 12"planer molder that makes beautiful trim and crown molding.

I am going to be 68 tomorrow, and don't say happy birthday, because I am not happy about that. I had a joiner that my grandfather bought. It wasn't easy to set up because it didn't originally come with a stand. I ended up giving it away. I do have a solid wood joiners' plane, about 16" long, I have a Stanley joiners' plane about 14 inches long, and I have a Makita electric plane (the kind with a tail). For a thousand years these have been the Joiners go to tool (except for the Makita). I rather enjoy the old tools. After, I am an old tool.
