These are supposed to be some of the most intelligent people in the country and yet they still refuse to listen to the truth. What hope is there for their future ?

These kids don't seem to have much hope for a decent future, all things considered. Their overwhelming desire to remain so woefully ignorant will most definitely lead them to a life of anger, resentment, misery and ultimately suffering, which they will blame on the rest of us. We indeed are in for a not-so-fun-ride in the not-so-distant-future.

Cambridge students aren't there because they're intelligent. They're there because mummy donates to the Cambridge Union and daddy plays golf with the Dean (and got the Dean's son a job jn the City). The real intelligent youth are found in the upper performing universities outwith the elitist Oxbridge Bubble. St Andrews, Durham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, UCL.

The UK is doomed with disrespect & denial shown by the Cambridge students in the background. Cambridge is supposed to be one of the best universities in the world with the brightest minds. Unlike the US where they have the economy and with the USD as the reserve currency of the world, the UK is no longer part of the EU and will continue to decline in every aspect on the world stage.

As always with this speaker, opinions are underlined with well chosen, broad ranging facts, rather than weak and emotional arguments used in the counter argument. If people who are concerned about historic slavery were as concerned about modern slavery they could truly claim the virtue they crave and do so in a useful cause.

I'm a high school teacher. Some of the rowdiest classes I've ever had were more respectful of guest speakers than these kids. I expected so much more from students fortunate enough to go to an institution such as Cambridge. Their lack of humility and openness to new (or competing) ideas is anathema to everything universities stand for. These kids should be utterly humiliated their infantile behaviour has been captured and permanently put on display for all to see.

The group behind him have no manners. Isn't it common decency to listen when somebody has given their time to speak whether you agree or not with what's being said? Could it be they believe they know everything about this subject and have nothing to learn? They have shown their ignorance. Cambridge needs to teach independent critical thinking.

I imagine the chances of finding someone that is actually connected to slavery is comparatively high in that room. Come on folks! You're the future. You'll be taking care of my kids. Listening would mean cognitive dissonance. Listening would mean that the basis of their moral positions and the way they see themselves and the world is wrong. It’s easier to ignore and discredit an argument that to listen and admit all of that.

The reactions of the students is why I stopped doing debate and debate competitions. Sure, it helps you practice public speaking, but you can get so narrow-minded on your own argument... and the judges assess winners not to find the truth, but to find the more persuasive candidate. You really enter with a "I'm gonna win this" mentality. There are better ways to have a constructive discussion, but it's not as entertaining/provokes as much of a reaction.

The inability of these students to separate emotions from genuine debate and a search for truth is scary. They appear more bothered about appearing virtuous then listening to him to to seek truth. They appear to want absolute purity from historical figures and he's right only british figures for them to be considered as decent people. The appear to think of themselves as better then the people as came before them as opposed to being equally fallable and flawed. They don't seem to care about the truth what they seem to care about is fitting in with what the current narrative tells us is morally superior and its people like that I don't trust, but honestly it's their parents fault and their teachers fault.

I am going to upvote this video because he said several extremely important things such as the burning of widows being banned by the British Empire. However, I would like to point out that the claim about India's population growing very fast during the Raj isn't a valid argument. The world population was doing the same thing. India's population growth compared to that of the world, just before the Raj, or during the Raj wasn't much different - if you compare the two time periods roughly around 1600-1750 compared to 1800-1950 (or the period of the Raj which was around 1850-1950), India, compared to the world, didn't change. UPDATE: I just realized that 80% of the world at this time was colonized by Europe - not just Britain. So, it might indeed be valid to say that Europe, in general, brought better health to the world. It might be interesting to compare this to the 20% that was not colonized.

If the Bahama's can't produce a list of harmed parties with evidence they are not compromised in their claim; then - was the slave status warranted? What if the original party put into bondage in Africa had murdered or raped or done some other crime for which they were put into bondage. Few if any slaves were brought with documentation as to why they were in bondage. Can we presume the bondage was not justified? What is fair compensation if I kill your husbund stealing money; and he was the breadwinner? Put me in prison? How does the aid or resplace your loss? Todays prisons are more like vacation homes, no work requirement.
