Justin, one reason Camel weren't better known in the U.S. is of because the cigarette company didn't take kindly to their branding being used on an album sleeve, and the band found themselves in litigation over it for ages. The U.S. release unfortunately has a totally different cover. And yeah, Camel were never know for great vocals, which is a big reason they leaned so much on instrumental music! But as this song demonstrates, Bardens and Latimer could solo for ages, which was more of a thing back then -- even prog bands like Yes featured extended solos. Camel are not as crunchy prog as bands like Yes, Genesis or King Crimson, but if you go through more of their 70's catalog (skip the first album) it'll become more apparent. The Snow Goose is a full-on instrumental concept album so I'd skip that one and try a few tracks from the next two albums instead -- Moonmadness and Raindances. The bass player here -- Doug Ferguson -- was very much a blues-y pocket guy. They switched him out for Richard Sinclair (from the band Caravan -- hence that Canterbury connection you read about) on Raindances, and he's got a much more fluid, jazzy style and tone.

Camel are NOT a jam band. Everything is carefully composed. I think that this is one of the top 10 tracks ever recorded.

Camel is great, one of my favourite bands. You definitely should check out Marillion! The Best band! Check out the album Misplaced Childhood ('85), Clutching at Straws ('87) both with singer Fish. And with Steve Hogarth, their 2nd singer, Brave ('94). Indeed you should listen to the whole album 👊🏻

You ever heard of a band called the Warning? They are rock power trio. Their album Error is great! Not a bad track on the album snd a bunch of head bangers. Highily recommended👍

I'm very much an album listener - I really like _Lady_ _Fantasy,_ but I've heard it way less than the minor songs on Nude (which is my favourite Camel album) because when I want to listen to Camel I'll stick an album on, and Mirage comes round rarely. Even when making compilation tapes (back in the 80s) I'd think about the overall flow, and often leave out songs I wanted because I couldn't make them fit well. Shuffled playlists irritate me so I've pretty much given up on Spotify. Old school, basically!

This song sounds like what you might wind up with if you combined Yes and maybe a couple of California rock bands from the late 60s-early 70s, The Doors being one of them. And that's a good thing IMO.
