Andy Latimer of Camel has always been one of the greatest guitarists. Unfortunately for Camel their music got lost in the shuffle when there were so, so many great groups in the 70's. Early Genesis, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, King Crimson were the headliners of early 70's Progressive Rock, yet Camel had some extraordinary music that was under-heard. Lunar Sea was always one of my favorites. Later on the song Stationary Traveler was also epic as an instrumental song. Great reactions - Thanks!

Having been to a number of Camel concerts since the 1970's I'd like to point out that Mr. Andy Latimer is one of those guitarists who REALLY puts himself into his playing and this is very evident if you ever see them in concert. I know other guitarists do this too but there is something about Andy when he is really into it. It's like his soul is pouring forth from his fret board. It is a highly emotional experience.

It may get as good, but it can never get better than that. Why do so many people keep saying that Camel was underrated? They were never underrated where I come from or by anyone with an opinion worth listening to. Andy used to get so emotional while playing this and other solos that he often kept his eyes closed. He would often end with tears running down his face along with many in the audience. Andy was a tortured genius as are so many like him. This could sometimes make him difficult to work with therefore the other members of the band must be highly commended for complimenting Andy's God-given talents so sublimely. This recording is musical perfection in every detail. The playing, production composition, and arrangements are just how they need to be. IMO, only David Gilmour was the equal of Andy Latimer when it came to expressing pure human emotion with an electric guitar in his hands. Just like the best David Gilmour solo. From the first time of hearing it is impossible to imagine how it could be played or sound any other way.

Saw Camel do this song live from 5-10 feet away in 2003 at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia, their last US visit. Such a beautiful song.

Andy Latimer is such a brilliant guitarist and Camel are still active I believe. There used to be a brilliant live version of this on YT but it keeps being taken down so you were probably wise to stick to the Studio version. Well worth checking out more of their discography. Brilliant band in all its configurations though the years with Andy as the sole remaining original member and fulcrum around which everything revolves.

Oh my. That was beautiful. I haven't (knowingly) heard Camel for years. Their "Mirage" album was playing during my first trip. Three of us saw that album cover come to life with a whole, breathing camel! Aah long ago and far away.... This is so lush it's going on my playlist and I'm going to share it with my daughter and some friends. Brandon, if you hadn't reacted God knows when I would have heard them again. So, thank you.

...yes, Brandon, a master piece of the band... there is an interesting background story to it, which is that Phil Collins was involved with it in two ways: 01 he played additional percussion, but didn't want to be mentioned in the credits; 02 the record company wasn't satisfied with the overall performance, and felt that it was lacking something... they consulted Phil, and asked him to suggest improvements... Phil listened carefully and very concentrated to it, and gave it a thumbs-up, as it was, which then got accepted by the company (thanks Phil!!)... PS. if there's any other song of this kind by Camel, that can compete or even top this one, then its 'Sahara' from their 1999 album Rajaz - another candidate for the platinum award, I'm convinced! 💖

So happy you've finally reacted to this song🙂. “Emotional” is the perfect word to describe it - and Camel's music in general. They are not spectacular à la Pink Floyd, ELP. or even Genesis. They're a group of dedicated, well seasoned and highly talented musicians who play a kind of prog that goes straight to the heart (you should hear their new keyboard player Peter Jones, from Tiger Moth Tales, wow!🔥). Oh, and don't dismiss their later albums too quickly: as with Genesis, Camel's greatness did not stop with the 80's although their style has changed somewhat. For a start, you can check out the track "Sahara" from their Rajaz album (1999): a feisty, jazzy fiesta of instrumental brio. Ciao 🐝!

Beautiful choice for today my friend. As with your first reaction to them, it was another new one for me. You understand that with the multitude of great bands back then, you can only listen to so many! Lol I read where Camel was an influence to Steven Wilson… I can hear some similarities in Latimer’s solos. This will be tough for you to top tomorrow!

Their first four albums were their best. Their self-titled album, Mirage, The Snow Goose and Moonmadness. They had all the same members in all four albums. Their fifth album and beyond were just not the same and I believe that's because some of the original members were not there anymore. Don't get me wrong they are still listenable. They just don't have that same umph as their first four.

Yep Camel is awesome and I would suggest Moonmadness in your one or two songs format. I second Happy The Man as well Kit Watkins is mind blowing in that band but he quit after the 3rd album. Happy The Man (1977) Crafty Hands (1978) Both are masterpieces and produced by Ken Scott former engineer for The Beatles.

I love Camel but I have havw a related gem you should know called HAPPY THE MAN. The greatest unknown Prog band that few will know to recommend. Keyboardist Kit Watkins joined Camel in 79. HTM is phenomenal

You could both do well grabbing a copy of their album Moonmadness. Pure brilliance. Either that or find a copy of the 2019 Bluray of their concert in 2018 at the Royal Albert Hall London where they played Moonmadness end to end together with a load more great tracks. Andy Latimer was 69 at the time but had lost none of his skill or feel. Fabulous concert.

Please add the American band Happy the Man to your to do list. Their keyboardist Kit Watkins contributed that lovely Moog solo to Ice. He joined Camel after HtM broke apart. Good songs from HtM from their self titled first album would be "Upon the Rainbow (Befrost)" or "Knee Bitten Nymphs in Limbo". Befrost is a vocal number while Knee Bitten is instrumental. Both have killer keyboard work from Kit Watkins.

I feel that you rarely mention the album that songs come from. For those of us whose formative musical years were actually the 70s, 80s, and 90s (mine being the 70s), an "album"...both as a collection of songs and as an artwork in itself...was a treasured piece of media. Obviously, today's music is gathered and experienced largely piecemeal via digital platforms, so the concept of an "album" may not resonate with you as much, but I wish you would at least briefly mention the album these older songs were on. I actually have a really cool oversized book (the size of a record album) that is a chronological collection of hundreds of album covers, and even some of the bands and music I've never listened to I can still enjoy the album cover art.

Oh yes, I was born in '75 so I grew up heavily with music in the 80s and of course cassettes were the main thing then for me. @@retroreactions.... Wow, you don't look or sound your chronological age. I still have about a hundred cassette tapes that I recorded back in the 80s...most with an album on each side. I unfortunately lent my record album collection to a girlfriend back then to store for me when I moved away for grad school and we broke up so I never got them back. The book is titled "Album Cover Album" and it was the first in a series. Roger Dean, famous for his Yes album covers, was the "author". I'm an artist so I was really into the artwork on record albums and was sad to see that medium fade away.

Ha, thanks...probably just the good genes (and never touching alcohol!) I'm the same! Well I did get rid of a lot my pro cassettes, but I still have a couple of bags full, including demos of my own songs and home concerts from the 90s and stuff! I'm not sure if I have my record collection still....good times man... Yes! Records had the best artwork often, inside and out, front and back! ✌

Big fan of Camel but one thing that excited me about this 1979 album was the addition of the phenomenal Kit Watkins ex- Happy the Man, a mostly instrumental Progband as well. HTM were the best American pure Progband & rivaled Camel and was much more complex with their uplifting creative virtuosity having elements of YES, GENESIS & GENTLE GIANT. Unfortunately, their peak years only lasted 76-78 with 2 incredible albums. They were non- mainstream & underexposed in Prog world. Kit went on to do beauttiful Ambient records
