Camelot Pro with MIDI guitar 2 - an outdoors iPad wireless setup test (iOS)

A first simple outdoors test of the ”Setlist, song and scene manager” that work also as both ”Hardware Instrument manager” as well as ”software Instruments & fx host”. It is also a pdf music score reader and MIDI patchbay sporting a ton of other smart functions. The funny thing starting out with this was that I felt it was limited in comparison to MainStage, which was the environment I wanted to move away from. But boy, was I wrong! There is sooooo much you can do with this once you get your head around it. It was super confusing to me to begin with to start over with a new signal chain hierarchy: starting with scenes, layers, building songs, and creating setlists. And neither really resembled the mixing console channel strip, and there was no Audio vs MIDI tracks/channel distinction. Not that this is needed, but it was confusing to begin with. And then to use MIDI Guitar as a pre-processor with audio in on a side chain? Whuuuut? But it works remarkably well, and yes it replaces MainStage in my setup, especially as it works on my iPad the way it does. I am not giving you any details on how to set up in this video though, this is just an outdoors (hostile environment) test drive. I set up a few instruments (flute, tenor sax, and bass clarinet) as scenes in a song, with MIDI Guitar 2 inserted as a pre-processor plugin on the Song Rack level, making it available for all scenes in that song. Then I had to make a MIDI thru connection for each scene, connecting each instrument with MIDI guitar 2. I did also copy the scene layers that ”hold” each instrument, which means that any assignment I did for the breath controller automatically applied to each instrument. After that, it is just a matter of moving between scenes to switch instruments. That's how ”easy” it is. It is actually easy, but just on other side of the labyrinth. I will probably return with some sort of setup guide for MIDI Guitar inside Camelot soon. Till then, have a look at this, and questions in the comments as usual.

Thank you for the demo of Camelot Pro and what you've been doing with midi interfaced to your guitar , really opens up a lot of possibility's to what you can do with guitar, I was planning on using my TC Helicon Voice live Extreme to do what Camelot Pro does but now I'm convinced Camelot Pro is the way to go after watching this, I almost bought a Steinberger spirit but I decided that getting an iPad was more important since I have a good selection of guitars in my stable, do still plan on getting though ; look forward to your plans for your future video on how to connect hardware and software and put it all together in Camelot! Really cool demo!

I am happy you both liked it and also found it helpful. I really can't ask for more. I am sure the guys @audiomodeling will be stoked to hear you choose Camelot over any competition, and truth be told, there is sooo much you can do with this software. I believe they also have a demo version for you to try before taking the plunge. Any specific questions arising in that trial process I would be happy to help you with (to the degree I am able). And I believe you prioritized just right with the iPad over the Spirit. If you have a great guitar already, you shouldn't go for another just for the sake of it. The Spirit is great, being compact, headless, great sustain and overall really consistent with regard to performance, but it is just a guitar. The reason I feature it a lot is that it is relatively cheap (compared to the Parkers), and makes for great companion everywhere. On Camelot I will do a setup video pretty soon, because it isn't super obvious how to go about thing coming in from anywhere else. It is a pretty modular structure, in the old school sense that you need to be prepared to patch your favorite structure together so that I works just like you want it. More on that later! Thanks for stopping by man! 🙏👍

Sorry for the questions, so it is not possible to send the two Midi signals through a single channel? and if it were sent through independent channels as in the case of AUM, where you can send the signal through session or Wi-Fi via bluetooth and via host, it occurs to me that this could be a way, it would be interesting to see your mapped guitar, with different instruments with different parts of the guitar, it occurs to me that you could also map some of the knobs on your guitar to change to a different sound without needing to be near the ipad, and with all the knowledge you have you could certainly add to your loopy pro portfolio you could make incredible sequences and the rozzeta suite with unlimited possibilities of midi dynamics and an lfo and all these apps in a portable way on your iPad although the mapping would be from abletton but everything else can be done from the ipad good blessings Midi Man and it was interesting how the birds began to sing when you started playing "music is the most powerful form of energy I have no doubt"

It is absolutely possible to send both MIDI Guitar 2 data together with breathcontroller data on the same MIDI Channel. I have a setup where I send MIDI from four controllers at the same time on the same MIDI Channel. (I have breath controller, an expression pedal, a Keith McMillen SoftStep foot pedal and a Livid Guitar wing on top of the MIDI coming in from the MIDI Guitar 2 software). But this software is pitch-to -MIDI, and as it "listens to/translates" incoming pitches, it does not recognize where on the guitar neck these pitches are produced, so you can't really map your neck as you suggested. You can use a hexaphonic pickup in a rather intricate setup, with this software, to be able to separate strings however. kzbin.info/www/bejne/porWhGSrr7aBl80

Man, what a great setup. I have the swam instruments and MG2 and the TEC Bite. I guess I need Camelot to make it work. I was using AUM, MG2, Geoshred and your Mozaic script, but only managed to get it playing smoothly a few times. I get the sense that using a breath controller is more stable. Cant wait to try this. Thanks for the video.

Thanks man! This sure is a great setup! I believe there is a trial version of Camelot, but I am not sure. You might want to check that out? I have only briefly dabbled with Aum yet, so I have nothing to compare with really, and I am not resposible for any Mozaic script either (I wish I was, but hey, there is only so much time). I am however in the process of putting together a more comprehensive startup pack for MIDI Guitar inside SWAM instruments (with Breathcontroller). It is mainly a collection of MIDI mapping files to choose from when starting up with any SWAM instrument, so that you won’t have to do all the same settings over and over again. I had a pack for woodwinds up, but now I intend to have also Brass and Strings. These three categories call for different settings to be set, so it takes some time. I hope to have it up together with my next Camelot/Swam video!

@@lofileif nice. I thought the script that was converting geoshred mpe signals to midi w expression was yours. Well it worked well, but I could only get it working stably and consistently a few times. I'm hoping this set up will be solid. Be great for live set ups.

No problem! It is nice to get credit and all, but then you have the guy that actually did it sitting there sad and depressed. 😢 But as for the Camelot setup I have great hopes. I've tried it with a wireless controller for switching scenes as well, and it works. But everything depends on the quality of the wireless setup down to the physical controller of course.

Love these detailed tutorials! and the Steinberger spirit looks really nice and portable, I'm planning on getting one to replace my Traveler guitar as the spirit has more pickups and a tremolo bar, I haven't tried those Steinberger tremolos with double-ball ends, Is the tuning stable? , I'm planning on using it for more than MIDI and I use my iPad a lot with amp sims and fxs

Hi Alex! Yeah, I have nothing bad to say about my Spirit, so I can absolutely recommend them. Of course you are going to check that you get a straight neck and that you get good frets, no stringbuzz even for really low action. But that goes for all guitars. The tuning has been 100 % from day one with this. And I have been really carefree when it comes to temperature changes and stuff like that. The only thing I know is an issue with this could be in the whammy bar construction, the pegs that the whammy bar rest on have had a tendecy to bend ever so slightly. So check the whammy bar action too. But other than that, just go for it. It is certainly one of my most used tools in my studio setup! 😀👍

Sure thing! Hope you get as much from this as I have. It literally changed my whole approach to playing guitar. But beware, there is a phase of getting use to the software initially. There is a little latency involved in the translation process, and it might feel awkward in the beginning. Check this out if you haven't already, it is applicable also to the iOS version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnm8anavqKtnesU

good evening, congratulations and thanks for sharing your knowledge, it seemed a bit confusing to me, why the midi guitar has a transmitter as if it were a normal guitar, because I know that a midi guitar does not transmit sound, if you could explain to me in a few words how that happens ?
@lofileif
@lofileif 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Luis! Good morning (form Sweden), and thanks for stopping by. I see how that would seem confusing, but fact is there is nothing MIDI about the actual guitar used here. It is a standard Steinberger Spirit GT-PRO Deluxe. It is actually the software that is on the iPad in this car that is called MIDI Guitar 2. It is by a company called JamOrigin and here's a link if you want to check it out for yourself. www.jamorigin.com

can you please explain in meow detail the path that everything is going on?
@lofileif
@lofileif Жыл бұрын
More detail? What did I miss here? You connect your guitar to your audio interface, and your audio interface to your computer/iPad. You can choose to use a DAW like Camelot or AUM if you like but it is not necessary. The software works in standalone mode as well. Open any vst plugin you have inside the MIDI Guitar 2 (MG2) software, and perhaps some audio effects too, and play. I really recommend you try the Trial version for desktop computer first, to see what questions you need answer to, and also to evaluate if this is something for you?www.jamorigin.com/download/

Hi... how to change the specific Scenes via CC or ProgramChange Message using KorgNano Key2 ..
@lofileif
@lofileif Жыл бұрын
Well, i haven’t used that particular controller, but generally for Camelot: you find settings for next scene/previous scene in the remote tab under settings. Now, I didn’t see any suitable buttons on that nanokey 2 to use. I am not certain that is the controller for the job. But I am not sure though. Sorry for the bad answer!

@@lofileifthanks for the reply...but my point is - is there any method to select ANY Scene by Program change !? Not previous or next. I mean from Scene 1 to Scene 6 or 7
@lofileif
@lofileif Жыл бұрын
@@swarafusionband420 I have no clue, tbh. I don't know nanokeys 2 very well. I think Camelot was designed primarily as a performance tool for rather rigid sets ( great for a predefined playlist, but not as good if you are improvising a lot). But if you use an iPad you can change it in the Camelot scenes window of course. But from my experience you dont have an option to match a specific scene to any CC or PC message.

how would you get all the audio from iPad into a PA?
@lofileif
@lofileif Жыл бұрын
You are going to have to use some sort of audio interface. I use an iRig because it is the most lightweight solution. A slightly better interface will give you slightly better tracking/results. Use the audio out from the interface to the PA..
