A UV filter is totally worth it! My granddaughter pulled my camera off my desk and my Canon f4 24-105 hit the floor at about a 45 degree angle. My $12 UV filter had a huge dent in it. So much that I couldn’t unscrew it off the lens. I had to break the glass to get to the inner metal ring of the cheap UV filter. I proceeded to pull/bend the ring out with pair of needle nose pliers until I was able to unscrew it. My $1200 lens was saved by a $12 purchase. I’ll take that any day of the week.

Well the trick is if you're trying to use your camera in low light you don't want sunglasses on the lens, you want as much light as possible. But you might not want to take the ND or VND filter off because that's what protects the lens from scratches, dust, dirt, fingerprints etc. So unless VND filters go as low as 0 stops of light (clear), then UV filters are actually still quite useful.

cool video. But whey does nobody mention clear protective filters? I think it would be smart to always have that on, same as a glass protector on my phone's screen. Also, ISO doesn't change the amount of light received by the sensor to produce a frame, it just changes the settings of the sensor, so that it "overreacts" to the same amount of light, hence why the quality of the picture always becomes worse the more you increase it beyond it's default/native setting.

Thanks.... for explaining the 1 stop vs 3 stops. I didn't quite get why that would be something to convert myself with. Secondly, I have UV filters for my D200 - yeah, an old dinosaur. And mostly I've used them to protect my expensive lenses. Now I am interested in shooting video with my iPhone Pro Max and looking for clarity in which ND filter I should go with. Do I get 3 or a set of 5 different filters? Then I would have to switch them out basically to see whats best for whichever lighting scenario I was in... Hmmmm.... The variable seems the best which gives you multiple options in one and you can control the density. That I found to be great. SO I will be looking for a variable ND for my phone. Thanks again.

One more tip, dont cheap out on the variable ND-filters.. I recently got a cheap (300 SEK) JJC 62 mm variable ND-filter, and it got this terrible X-pattern.. My ~1500 SEK (~140 Euro) NISI variable ND-filter is friggin amazing.. Perhaps i got a bad copy of the JJC filter, who knows..
@PeterLindgren1
@PeterLindgren1 5 жыл бұрын
That happens when you use it on wider angles though. I have no issues using my JJC ND filters for video at all (in fact all videos and vlogs here are shot using that very JJC ND Filter). But if you are going to take photos i recommend fixed ND Filters though. Image quality wise it's more bang for the buck buying one JJC Variable ND and one Fixed ND! Thanks for dropping a comment man!

PLVLOG The funny thing is yeasterday I was getting out of my car and I was carrying one too many things and I dropped my A9 with my GM 24mm F1.4 and it hit hard! on the cement smh. I herd a crash and looked down and saw glass by the camera. Well, as i bend down to pick up my camera it all looked banged up to me so i picked it up and I knew it was not good at all. To my surprise and being absent minded I totally forgot I always buy UV filters for my lenses and the glass I saw on the ground was from my Heliopan UV filter and the ring on the UV filter was all banged up but my camera and my lens was perfectly fine. Not one scratch on them lol man if you only knew the feeling i felt when I saw it was only the UV filter. I think you see my point from this but I can say with 100% if I didn't have that UV filter on my camera my Lens would've been broken without a doubt and that was worth every bit of the $100 I spend for it. Just me, also love the content you've been putting out PLVLOG keep it coming.
