I used to be a professional colorist for a print shop in Massachusetts. One thing that should be mentioned for color critical work is the color and brightness of the ambient light, and oddly enough, what you are wearing. If you have a room that is too bright, or too warm or cool or the light is has a strong color cast it can severely skew your color perception. Also be very careful not to wear brightly colored clothing (wear dark gray or black) when sitting in front of a highly reflective monitor like an iMac. That color cast will affect your editing. Same goes for anything in the background. We used to work in dark or dimly side lit rooms painted in a special XRite neutral gray paint, wearing aprons in the same color. Sometimes we would even completely isolate the screen using a hood and a face mask so only our eyes showed. Yes, that’s extreme, but when you are working with corporate clients spending millions on an advertising campaign, you have to get it right the first time. ;)

A very informative overview Nigel on this subject and can testify to being there with the print differing on paper and the monitor but getting there now. In terms of your sponsorship announcement, personally I think it's great news as you have been working hard to build your channel up and as full time photographer this will undoubtably contribute to the continuation of the channel and your profession and I wish you well.

Thanks for demystifying a topic that I have struggled to understand for a while now. I know I need to implement colour management, but really didn't know where to start. A new monitor is definitely on my shopping list, and I will get colour profiles for some Fotospeed papers that I am now trying on my first ever A3 printer, a Canon Pro-100S, as a result of your enthusiasm for the products. As for sponsorship, I have absolutely no problem with you going for it. Anything that helps you continue producing such interesting and informative videos is fine by me. I've learned a lot from you and a few other landscape photographers on KZbin, and I don't want to lose these wonderful sources of knowledge and inspiration.

Great vlog, I’ve just treated myself to a decent printer so this vlog was of particular interest and you’ve just explained what seemed like some very complicated things in a nice clear and simple way. As far as sponsorship goes, it’s obvious you put a lot of time and effort into your channel so why not reap a little reward, we are all so used to seeing a short plug i doubt it would put anyone off.

thanks Nigel for a very informative film - my images always used to print darker than the image on screen because of the screen being backlit. It just needed someone to point that out. I also find that with using a laptop the angle of screen tilt can also affect the view. Many thanks for your time and effort............same time next week.

Excellent tutorial. I agree what you say about the brightness, it's really the hardest to get right, especially if you sell to customers, where you don't have full knowledge about the space where the print is hung. I also go with 120 brightness for my display, but usually I will brighten my photos a little bit for print, if I don't have control over where they are hung.

As usual, good job. I have a fully calibrated system and workflow. This video confirmed that my setup is correct. At one point, I was getting dark prints. I found that calibration really doesn't do a good job with brightness because every environment is different. So, I went to the exercise of reducing my monitor brightness and then making a print until I got it dialed in. You do a great job and I look forward to your videos each Sunday... I see nothing wrong with advertising. Everyone has to make a living.

Great job, Nigel! Color management is something that makes some people go into a coma. It shouldn’t as color management is as important as taking a great photo with a great camera. I think you’ve done a brilliant job of simplifying/clarifying what it is and making it easier to grasp. It is essential for seeing your vision realized in a print. Get the sponsors as you need to make a living. I have faith in you that your choice(s) of sponsors will be in line with your sensibilities of this channel. All the best,

Nigel, I've personally learned a lot from you and I find you content very helpful. Your work is inspiring and have helped me channel my interest in photography. I love how you take us with you on your journeys. That in itself encourages me to explore. I've also come to admire your thought process behind your compositions so much so that I now see things differently. Having said that, your work and your time should be rewarded. I'm happy that you are able to secure sponsors. I guess now the challenge would be to manage the time dedicated to sponsors vs the content. Don't loose your identity in the process.

Hey Nigel, As a follower of your channel for some time I'm perfectly good with you finding sponsors that you yourself use or would use, not just selling a product. I agree with others that have commented too, this is your living and you have to cover your overhead, expenses, and time. You provide an extremely useful nitch with your videos from travel logs, reviews/overview and especially your instructional tutorials, as I call them, after all, your time and effort deserve to be compensated. Thank you again for another very informative instructional video, I found the information and topic very helpful. I've been trying to calibrate my screens, this is the next thing I need to accomplish. I'll be checking out your links in the video for a calibration unit. I also appreciate the info for getting one's printer properly calibrated for the correct paper/printer profiles, I didn't know that was available, I need to check this out too, thank you!

Good short and to the point coverage of a tricky topic Nigel. I spent a good number of hours wasting ink and paper until I got on the custom ICC profiles from the good people at Fotospeed. Having everything singing from the same song sheet/profile is the key to consistent results. On sponsorship - you fill your boots, it is your livelihood and if the impact is as low as in other photo vlogs, I can live with that for sure.

Great video Nigel, very interesting and informative. I am not at the stage of printing my own photo's, as their just isn't that many of them yet and couldn't justify the cost of a high end printer. What I could really do with doing is finding an online printing service providing high quality prints for the odd ones I do want done. Oh and well done on the sponsorship. Go for it I say, we all view these video's for free and a few adds aren't going to hurt anything.

Nigel, your content is great and so is the quality of your footage. A lot of work and time goes into that. That said, I’m happy if you got one or two companies wanting to sponsor your channel. I don’t mind to see or hear a little publicity in exchange for good content. As for the printing, I have just started to get some pictures printed. Unfortunately where I live that isn’t that easy as good printing services are sparse and in the country here there are no online services neither (except you wanna print a calendar on glossy paper with heart frames around each pic ;) I was close to buy a canon printer but stopped the project after not being able to buy quality photo paper in the country. Had to import it and well, just too expensive. Anyhow, hope that printing service I found is good as I would love to see some of my pics printed and not only on the screen. Keep up that great work and looking forward to next Sunday 🤘🏻

i disagree, after years of studies, and tutorial and books and classes, i still have lots lots lots of doubts in the effectivenss capabilities of these spider intruments. and to set a profile in lightroom for me is useless because now , 90 per cent of the print labs dont wont any more be charged of responsabilities and they requires a final pdf in high quility print generated form Indesign for example, and we are far far away to get close result between photo in "Monitors" supercalibrated using software super iccprofilated and "Papers" coming out from printer supercalibrated. they still still comes out very diffrent , using these instruments. i disagree.

Very timely video for me. I'm getting ready to unpack my new BenQ (not the 320) monitor and calibrate it. I suppose the various printing services do something similar as far as calibrating their equipment. I see you now have the Fuji XT-3. I hope you'll discuss that at some point, as that may be my next step in equipment upgrades. Also curious for your take on the Nikon Z7 in light of all the negativity surrounding it. As far as sponsorship goes, I'd say go for it. There are no end of other channels doing it. As long as it keeps the content coming without intruding, what's the harm. Carry on!

You´ve been extremely clear to me, so thank you very much for this video. I am a very amateur photographer and art history student and have a long way in front of me, but this kind of material is very usefull and I learn a lot. Plus, I think that if you believe in your sponsor and have an honest approach to what you are doing, it´s great to have a better support, because you´ll give better tips too (and maybe make good recomendations on what gear to use, for instance). I really like your work and the places you visit, though I usually never take landscape photos (I live in a city with very little an unintereseting landscape -well, maybe I am just to used to them). But really, my interest in photography is more on the urban an arts side. Anywhere, you always help, and always give a lot, and that surely is because you seem to be also a kind person, and that is wonderfull to have a good relation with your viewers. So thank you again, so much!

Another very informative video, which answered a lot of items I often struggled with you put it over in a way that anybody could understand, and by coincidence I do have a calibrator the same as you used and it was money well spent, all I do need to do is to calibrate my printer.....oh by the way the more sponsorship you can get the more you can do on here as long as the ads don;t keep popping up every 5 minutes which would spoil the viewing......Thank You.....DG

Getting sponsorship is a good idea! I really enjoyed this video. You have given us good information. I wasn't aware of all that is involved in color calibration. (I'm an amateur.) Thank you!

No issue with the sponsorship, you put a lot into your videos so you deserve some compensation.

Nigel, Seriously, I would like to join you in your workshop someday. Now, people here are getting free stuff from you. It is the law of the universe that take and give is part of making sure that the world continues. You have a good heart, but you really don't have to ask, this is your channel, own it! I just subscribed to your channel for only two days and learned so much! I love what you are doing, and I feel ashamed, not able to contribute to you directly. Please do what is appropriate. Speaking from the realistic side of the world, should there be any basher in the future, they are not only not your followers, they are vampires whom you should ignore. If there is any solid product, never hesitate to recommend and to even earn from it righteously. Bless!

Very useful video as always Nigel! As for sponsorship, go for it. As you said, many other channels mention it and it never gets in the way. Very nice of you to ask for our thoughts! All the best with it! My colour management workflow is slightly different...I am badly colourblind so I have an 'get wife to check colours' step...just to make sure I haven't turned blue skies purple or something equally barmy! :D

Coming from someone who wants to start printing their photos I find it very daunting. It’s not just doing the photo processing with your chosen program ie Lr or Capture one etc and send it to your printer. It’s a good quality screen, buy a calibration tool, the correct paper for the photo, sending print off to a printing service to get correct profile (no idea how much they charge for that per paper type) a good quality printer. In the end it just seems so expensive and out of reach to get good quality photos. I am just an amateur wanting to produce good quality prints, I don’t have the professional jobs that recoup the money I need to pay out on the equipment. After watching and I’m not having a go at you because I love your work and have been subscribed for a long time, it’s just that good quality and accurate prints seem out of reach cost wise to set up.

Very Informative Nigel. One question, what do I do if I upload images and also print images? I like ProPhoto colour space but do I also need to edit again using sRGB to upload? In the past I have just used sRGB for both

Very interesting video. I'm having more of my images printed than ever before and am still learning the processes. As for sponsorship, very well done. They wouldn't sponsor you if your channel wasn't successful. Keep up the good work!

I struggle only having a basic HD laptop for editing. Especially with the brightness aspect you mentioned. I'm really going to have to work out how to vet my screen brightness set better. Informative though Nigel and something I think a lot of people just skip over.

Thanks for that Nigel, one of the best explanations I have seen. Wrt sponsorship, personally I have no problem with it at all, provided the presenter is up front about it. What I dislike and avoid is when presenters mention and reco stuff from which they are getting some sort of payment or benefit, but dont say so. All the very best - Jn

Shared experience is the best. Everything looks good on an illuminated screen. Translating the image to print is where 99% end of the work ends up in the bin. Thank you for this thoughtful video. Sponsorship is fine as long as it serves you rather than directs your content. We are starting to get some interesting fog here in Marin looking forward to slogging out in the damp to take a closer look at it :) Is it just me or has the comma gone missing on my iPad keyboard?

Excellent video! Great explanation. Other channels do very poorly when it comes to technical issues, but with your background viewers can get great and trustworthy explanations. Aa for me, I don't mind it being even more technical :-) About the sponsorship - you got to make a living, it's obvious.

Nigel, crack on confirm your sponsorship! For good content and a quality channel, I don‘t mind the small sponsorship advert; I‘m even happy to sit all the way through an normal advert if it supports you. It is important that we (the viewers) give back to enable you to continue to provide a quality product for OUR benefit!

Always enjoy your presentation and informative, entertaining content. Just upgrading my 6 yr old PC and monitor 😬 and haven't really started printing as I'd also need to upgrade my $119 Canon 'photo' printer. I'd also be interested in your thoughts on printers, ongoing cost of inks etc vs using a print service. Definitely ok with sponsorship if it helps your business thrive and keeps your channel goingà
