Panasonic releases the GH6 and all is well in micro four thirds land. Or IS IT?! There's a bit of a problem with m4/3 and telephoto lenses for wildlife. An area where they should shine with smaller crop sensors vs full frame. Or do they? Panasonic DFD autofocus might not be their biggest flaw.
If you buy today's gear through my affiliate links, Panasonic will release a telephoto lens that wasn't built with salt water and rusted metal from sunken ships.

9:05 - My "Image Area of Video" 1:1 pixel for pixel sensor crop setting on GH5 II / GH6 (aka "Ext Tele Conv" on GH5 / G9) is custom set to the right press of joystick. All I do is press it once then press same button again (quick double tap), then half press shutter to confirm or fully press shutter to confirm and begin recording. Takes less than half a second to set. Try that :)

I had and sold the Leica 100-400mm, I found that holding the end of the lens and push/pulling is more effective than using the stiff zoom ring. I am a photo boy, so didn't use the manual focus often. Upgraded to a second hand copy of the 300mm f4 pro, and use the 75-300mm f4.8-6.7 as lightweight option. I find the IQ and stabilisation is better on the 300mm f4 pro than the Leica but I use Olympus Cameras. The above is true even when using the mc-14 1.4x teleconverter. The overall size does get a fair bit bigger and no zoom can be inconvenient, but if you come across a used copy, is definitely worth consideration. Cheers

I used both Leica 100-400mm as well as Leica 50-200mm + 1.4x TC. Recently sold the 100-400 because it was unreliable with the sharpness: mostly good until you reach the long end. I did get some really good photos with it but the 50-200 is MUCH sharper and a little lighter and smaller, which made me keep it over the other lens. Even though I was giving up a bit of reach. Oh yeah: I bought the 100-400 used and it came with some dust inside and an incredibly stiff zoom ring (focus ring was fine however). Had the 50-200 in regular use for more than three years and no dust enclosed inside yet.

I appreciate all the hard work you have put into this video Casey. I have been using my Nikon D7500 + Sigma 150-600mm C lens for wildlife photography which is great, but not for video-the contrast detection AF is terrible in 'LiveView' mode. I used to use a Panasonic G80/G85 + the Pana 100-300mm which was okay but AF was unreliable when tracking and the manual focus ring was stiff and virtually unuseable as it was so jerky and jumpy! That Pana/Leica 100-400mm is notorious with the zoom and focus rings too-plus you can't add teleconverters to it either! Maybe the best option for Pana users is the Pana/Leica 200mm OIS F2.8 lens (It gives a FF equiv of 400mm f2.8, then if you put a 2x TC on it becomes an 800mm f.5.6 lens). I am tempted by the new OM-1 though, with it's new AF system and burst rate plus that Oly 100-400mm lens I reckon it could be a winner for wildlife.

Leica 100-400 zoom ring is thin and distorts. Take hold of it near the camera and it moves far more easily. Grip it at the other end and it won't budge. Shouldn't make a difference but it does. Did you accidentally turn the stabilisation and auto-focus off?

Excellent video as ever :) Sorry to be a bit of a nerd, but I am going to pick you up a bit about the figures on your spreadsheet as it is not quite as simple as working out the total area.. If you are taking 16:9 or 17:9 then you are not using the whole sensor - cropping off the top and bottom. The effect of this is worse for MM, M 4/3, 1 Inch and 1 / 2.3 than Full Frame or APS-C. The ratio of MM, M 4/3, 1 Inch and 1 /2.3 is 1.33 but full frame and APS-C 1.5 each. 16:9 = 1.77 and 17:9 = 1.88, and the closer to those numbers obviously the better. In the case of those formats with a ratio of 1.33, you are using 75% of the sensor at 16:9 and 70% at 17:9, as compared to APS-C and FF which uses 85% of the sensor at 16:9 and 80% at 17:9. In terms of equivalent of FF; APS-C remains the same comparatively as they have the same sensor ratio. But all the 1.33 aspect ratios compared to FF drop to 23% for MM 4/3 and 12.6% for 1 inch. Hope all of that makes sense :)

The GH6 seems to be optimized for one specific, high-profile use case: Max dynamic range with V-Log in DR Boost mode. This is why the GH6 has V-Log rather than V-Log-L and why it doesn't offer an explicit Dual-ISO feature. Optimizing this GH6 sweet-spot was key to topping the GH5s while precluding direct feature-by-feature comparisons.

The 50-200 is buttery smooth, but it doesn’t have a lens lock. For wildlife the 100-400 is a great option just buy a used one that’s been worn in. Great video, good to see you're having fun with the G9 + PL100-400. Told ya, and the IBIS was good too. Well, that stiffness has been complained about on other platforms, it sucks. My personal copy is buttery smooth, seems like I was lucky. GH6 sounds excellent and like a high performer. In many aspects, but autofocus. I cannot believe they kept contrast based AF. Seriously, on the new 25mp sensor flagship??? Life could have been perfect with PDAF or ToF AF...

@@cameraconspiracies Well, then at least you made it look like you had decent fun with a good combo consisting of great ergonomics, size, reach, colors (for wildlife!), stabilization, video quality incl. sharpness and noise and last but surely not least: price! Yes, there will always be some drawbacks like stiff focus and zoom rings. This can be fixed, see the user comment regarding WD40 (easy on the amount!!!). All other aspects above could not be fixed if they were lacking. I really believe with your new interest in wildlife videography m43 ticks all the boxes that it has lost to apsc or ff in the meantime. For long focal lengths, which is key for wildlife, it offers a competitive price point, lightweight body+lens combo and super reach. That is, of course, without sacrificing any of the above qualities and requirements. In that regard the G9 + fixed PL 100-400 is the best wildlife bang for the buck (as an alternative one might chose the Oly 100-400 for better focus ring, but at the expense of less stabilization, more weight and higher price - totally valid. Or as you considered: the marvellous PL 50-200 + 2x converter. Lets see how sharpness and noise will turn out at the long f8-end. Everything is a compromise).

I have the 50-200 with the 1.4x converter on the g9. It is impressive and the zoom/focus rings are very smooth. I think you start to lose noticeable quality on the 2x converter with this lens, that tc is a better match for the 200 prime from what I've read - but this may be a lot less noticeable in video vs stills. I'd give it a go if you don't care about the AF. All the 2.8-4 panaleica lenses are great and one of the main reasons I hesitate to switch systems. Having said that the fuji 70-300 with a tc gets you more reach.

The Panasonic 100-300 f4.0-5.6 lens ii also has a very stiff manual focus. I've found the rings just don't have much strength to them so if you pinch squeeze with just finger tips it compresses against the barrel and makes it hard to turn. If you turn it with your hand encircling the ring with even pressure it works a lot better. Still, it's a pity the Mark i Mega version had this problem and they didn't fix it on the Mark ii Power version.

Hey Jermey (can't bother to look up your name sorry!) edit: saw other comments, Casey! I'm long time Oly shooter, I really want to get a "Pro" camera. I'm thinking of RICOH GR III... j/k. Do you think I should jump on the OM1 or wait for the EM5IV? Or there won't be a better Oly camera for few years, so waiting is just for them to show the cannibalized version of OM1 thus meaning I should just get the OM1? OM1 is expansive, and I really don't like the idea of spending so much on a body (thus why I shoot with crap bodies haha). Also, your intro thing with the auto tuned thing? Awful. You want the perfect camera? really? so why are you using Olympus????????? (seriously tho that into looks janky af) love your content, keep it up! Roy

Casey, even on Lumix cameras, it is the Olympus 100-400 that is the best choice. The Panny version doesn't support optical teleconverters. The Oly is easier to use and works with teleconverters and just as sharp as the Panny, maybe slightly sharper. I love it on my G9. Hey, here is a question for you then. If Medium Format is 168% of so called "full frame", then why can full frame call itself full frame if medium format has a fuller frame? :) The correct term for "full frame" is actually "small frame", or the original "Kleinbild". This is the term the inventor of the format gave it, Oskar Barnack.
@mountainhobo
@mountainhobo 2 жыл бұрын
"If Medium Format is 168% of so called "full frame"" -- It is a modern marketing bs speak. Back when those terms actually meant something, the smallest medium format was 6x4.5, and most people really thought of 6x6, 6x7, and 6x9. It's like today marketidiots decided to call a sedan with a sloping roof a "coupe". Those people should be shot to improve collective genepool.

30 percent crop on OM-1 - is that from full sensor? It is not a big deal because a 4:3 sensor already records only 75% of sensor when it records in 16:9 ratio. Dropping to 70% in high speed is not that huge a crop. Full 16:9 readout still has 25% crop on sensor. Or is it a 30% crop in 16:9 mode, which means 30% crop over 25% crop. What is it? I'm confused.

Once Panasonic gets the autofocus pulsing rate fast enough in future cameras such as the GH13, then the human eye would only perceive a slight blur in the background. This would be in addition to the Toneh resulting from the Tony rating of the lens. This would force Panasonic to introduce an actual DFD Tony Rating. DTR. This DTR could really set Panasonic apart from the competition. Tony's backgrounds..............................

I have the G9 and Panasonic/Leica 100-400. Initially I was disappointed having purchased the lens from new. There is a couple of dust particles inside and nearly sent it back but there is no loss of image quality and dust will eventually find its way in anyway, sooner or later. Zoom is a bit stiff but not unusable. Lens creep isn't a problem when camera is attached to a backpack camera mount and feels really lightweight to carry around, leaving hands free to do other stuff. Zoomed in at 400mm with ex-tele converter punches in a bit more and is nice but like you, pisses me off having to confirm switching with the 3 button press but with eye in the view finder, can be done quickly without having to look away. I'd recommend leaving ex-tele converter on all the time using a long lens. Dual IS with IS lock in video mode still has minor movement at 400mm, which is to be expected at longer focal lengths. Firmware upgrade is available for focus ring control but haven't felt the need to try that yet. Wildlife filming is a joy to use, just setup your custom dial buttons for different shooting conditions and away you go. Panasonic Lumix bodies are well thought out but their auto focus sucks and always will
