I’m quite interested in this camera. I’ve been mulling over the upgrade to a C400 as a big brother to my C70 but this seems to be a great middle ground. I am curious as to the frame rate options. Can you record 4k full frame at the 60p in 422 10bit? Is this downsampled or is it line skipped? Thanks! Lookin forward to the the full review!

All 4k up to 60p is oversampled from 6k. I'm sure there's a 422 10 bit option at 60p too, but you'd have to check the menus and web specs

Thanks nice review. Does it have face only AF, like the c70 and more importantly does it have it in animal AF mode?

The AF is same as the C400, so more sophisticated than the C70. It can apparently detect human body shapes, but I only noticed a face frame when composing. And yes it has an animal AF mode, I show the menu and a demo in the video. I think it was discerning their faces rather than their whole bodies, but I can't remember 100%

Nice review. Not a fan of this sensor compared to the c70’s DGO, but glad canon are sticking with this size and format. A c70mkii will be amazing.

@@cameralabs the DGO of the c70 has some magic to it that this doesnt have. Cleaner shadows and better highlight rolloff. It just "feels" better and less sterile. Adding the speed booster gives it the full frame look and DOF as well. I do like the sharpness of this and would love an oversampled DGO sensor. I just don't think Canon can process DGO at full frame yet, it's a much larger sensor.

Personally I didn't like the hybrid aspect of the R5C, it felt like 2 cameras in one with different menus. If you're only filming video, I'd get the C80 in preference. PS - if you're planning on buying at B&H, please consider going via my links!

Very good review as usual. One ask I would have, is that when you zoom into the color chart to compare noise levels, include the zoom percentage on screen. Because the fact that you're zooming into an image, you're automatically increasing the size of the noise. Including the percentage of zoom would help us determine what we can expect in real world use. Thank you!

Yes, I'd say so, definitely in 4k HQ mode where it's oversampled from 8k, albeit only up to 30p

Komodo X has a great image but even at the reduced price still costs a lot more than a C80 when you add in all the extra bits required to actually use it - also no NDs or useable AF.

No CFexpress is a very weird choice. I get that it doesn’t need them from a recording bitrate standpoint, but the workflow benefits are huge when downloading large video files. What an odd decision. Especially when this is basically going head-to-head with the FX6 and the future (obvious) FX6 II.

I had an R6 and was so excited when I upgraded to the R5 that I ended up switching to Sony because of that exact limitations of not being able to shoot fast redundant because of that SD slot. Glad I didn’t wait for the R5ii. The real kicker is almost every camera body today has a pipeline limitation of getting data off the buffer and through the processing engine at around 700-800 MB/s. So the real question is, is dual CFA or single CFB better (aside from price) since the only real benefit of CFB is the post workflow of offloading speed. Otherwise is CFA more superior since Sony can implement dual CFA slots and canon cannot unless you have an R1?

To me it feels like they just added some new stuff on to the C70 without really addressing the issues of the C70 and called it a C80. And if this camera was cooking, why would they come out with a C400? I just don't get it.

So no 6K60p in RAW, no 6K with a codec at all (why?), no FF 4K downsampled from 6K in RAW and no CF-Express card at all. In addition a very outdated ND-Filter system (compared to Sony). For me as an FX6 user no reason to take that camera into consideration. What’s even worse. Sony has no reason to perform superb with their FX3/FX6 succesor. At last because it is not a DGO sensor we should not expect any big steps in terms of DR.

Looks like the C80 has the thumbstick design from the DSLR + R5/R6 era...the GOOD thumbstick era. Yet the R5 II and R6 II have updated slippery convex trash joysticks. Idk what it says about me that this is what I care about.
