As a C70 owner since day one (FOUR YEARS NOW) I want to remind people, that NOW is a perfect moment to buy a used C70 for next to nothing and embrace that camera I STILL have yet to find a better more pleasing image out of camera. And despite it's flaws, would still recommend it to anyone starting out. S35 is totally fine, the speed booster works great, and if you don't need SDI or some of the new features of the C80, don't let GAS confuse you into thinking that you NEED the C80 I was planning on selling my C70, but now I am thinking with the value it brings to me as a backup camera and for how much it would sell for, it's not worth it to sell anymore. To have a B cam with he image quality of the C70 is STILL powerful to this day. I mean, the C100 original is still awesome today... think how much longer life the C70 has as a b cam Ideally, I'd love to buy the C80, but it's feature set goes beyond my needs as a "KZbinr" and I still love the C70. | Search yourself and decide if it's worth it and if you can afford to make the switch/upgrade If you're starting from scratch, this makes a really hard choice. If you can afford it, go ahead and get the C80, but the C70 now offers an insane value
@Christo_glenn19 күн бұрын
Hey mate, I've been contemplating the c70 for a while now. In regards to the speedbooster, do you ever have the purple dot issue when shooting in really bright scenes? I like using the sun for backlighting, coupled with bounce for fill when I'm shooting outdoor documentary work, but do you think I'd have issues?
@angles781816 күн бұрын
I just did that, got one for 3K with one extra battery and a 256GB card. I'm also an owner of 2 Red Komodos, which I love for corporate for their sharpness, but now I'm starting to do a lot more doc work, I needed something with more built in options and better audio as which that's where the Komodo suffers (as well as boot up time). The komodos had me missing moment, and requires an AC most the time considering media and other caveats. Depending how the C70 goes, I may consider selling the two Komodos and getting either a C80,C400, or Komodo X. But I think most likely a C80. I like having small form factors for owned equipment as most my clients are retainer corporate and small to mid size productions. The other big benefit of the C70 is the smaller codecs for when clients just want stuff uploaded for social or uploaded in general. I don't have fiber where I'm located so uploading those massive RED files is a pain. So for any productions that are bigger than my average gigs, I can always rent bigger cameras.

Best run down of the C80 yet. I have 2 x C70s and I'm happy with them, so as nice as the C80 looks I'm not going to upgrade. Plus, if you use exclusively EF lenses, there's actually a really good reason to keep the C70. Firstly, with the speed booster attached the camera's light gathering is 1 full stop higher than the ISO suggests, so if you think the C70 is only usable up to ISO 3200, then that's actually the equivalent of ISO 6400 on the C80. That's just 1 stop worse than the C80, and if you use prime lenses as I do, then its totally a non issue. The second thing with EF lenses is you can use the adapter with built in CPL filter, making it possible to use with some ultra wide lenses that don't take filters on the front. Its really not that cut and dry folks. Sure the C80 looks really impressive, but if you're not using RF lenses it really might be sensible to keep what you have in the C70. One thing I'd bet is that the C80 is less power efficient than the C70, which is one of the C70s great strengths.... I guess we'll have to see on that one. There are some other improvements on the C80 not mentioned in this video, but they can all be fixed on the C70 really easily. For example, the C80 has built-in wifi for remote control.... but you can buy a cheap USB Wifi or ethernet dongle and plug it in to the USB-C port on the C70. The mounting hole position on the bottom of the C70 can be easily fixed with an adapter plate. Both my C70's have a smallrig bottom plate and they didn't cost much. One thing I will say, is the C70s autofocus makes me a little nervous in back lit scenarios or in low light, and that is probably the only reason I'd give the C80 a second thought... but even then the AF on the C80 is still nowhere close to that on the R6 Mark ii which I keep as a back up. The C80 is Canon's best effort for years, but C70 owners should not get too carried away with the 'new camera' videos coming out. Its actually why I stopped making camera videos about 2 years ago now as I don't think its healthy.

CVP's test show the C70 has more dynamic range. Of course Canon wouldn't give us a full frame DGO sensor for $8000 and $5500. I personally prefer fixed ISO higher dynamic range sensors which Alexa does. I work in narrative so it's different for event shooters. Yes the dynamic range difference isn't huge but when you are in the under 12.5 stop range every half stop counts. I personally find the C70 noisy compared to an Alexa in high dynamic range situations. The C80 would fare worse. I light my scenes and love having the maximum latitude to work with in post. For people who shoot in uncontrolled situations a C80 makes more sense with triple ISO.
@SheldonCharron2 ай бұрын
@@renaissancedigital5730 I've shot narrative too and directed/produced too, but many of us who shoot doc, reality, true crime, commercial, corporate have used the c70 extensively, and many times I personally prefer it over the 500 II. I don't do any events, and I don't think Griffin does either, so pigeon-holing the C70 for events is not realistic. Alexa is a different beast entirely, as is the Sony Venice and other larger cinema cams.

@GriffinConway4 күн бұрын
I noticed the mirrorless cameras tend to be slightly cooler/whiter compared to the cinema cameras. The little secret tip I have for you is when you walk in to a room, turn on auto WB on the c70/c80. Once you see what the color temp is, manually set it to that. For example if the camera is 4800k WB and you want it to look warmer, just set it to manual and adjust to 5000k or 5200k.

@@GriffinConway Thanks Griffin! I think if you have multiple C70's then it's okay because you can shot match and the footage is all uniform, but when trying to match the C70 to a FF camera the difference in sharpness is quite noticeable, and like you say in the video it's not really detail you can get through digital sharpening. And again punching in on the image from the C70 just isn't really an option either imo. Really love your content btw and it's helped me so much to improve my craft, all the best from Ireland! 🇮🇪

I'm running two C70s over here, and I'm not sure how much sense it would make to upgrade one of them to the C80. Having two of the same camera just makes everything so much easier in interview scenarios, IMO, and I did notice some color differences between the C80 and C70 here in Griffin's video, which are to be expected, honestly. I do *love* that triple base ISO, though: I'm frequently forced to shoot in low light with little or no possibility of adding artificial light. I shoot pretty much exclusively with EF-mount Zeiss glass. I don't love using the speedbooster, though I do it sometimes when I have to work close to the subject or need extra light. I also do love the extra resolution on the C80. Even though I do like the softness of the C70 in a lot of scenarios, when we do product work, the client is usually wanting as much detail as we can capture, and I sometimes have to sharpen C70 footage in post a little bit in those situations.
@EvanMortonFilm2 ай бұрын
Hi Griffin! C70 owner here haha, I noticed even before the punch-in @7:25 that the C80 is sharper. I've even felt like my R5 is sharper than my C70 with EF lenses and always thought it may be due to the diopter in the speed booster adapter. The C70 for me checked all the boxes, except that it's super 35. Full frame has always been a major boost to me as far as low light goes, especially with narrative filmmaking and wanting to film low-lit scenes, especially on an independent level. The triple base ISO plus the full frame is huge in that respect. The autofocus and SDI are nice too, would love to add it to my lineup as my A-Cam. The smaller body seems more flexible for gimbals than a C400 imo and easier for documentary filmmaking, especially in a docu-follow scenario.

@@JesseDriftwoodfor me, I picked the R5C over the FX3 and I’d pick it again any day. Most argue that the FX3 has more dynamic range than the R5C and I don’t disagree, but in most practical scenarios there’s been footage from my bud’s FX3 at particular ISOs in lower light conditions where the R5C noise looked actually cleaner/smaller than the grainy noise of the FX3, at least the high ISOs under 12800. And for my own workflow I find the R5C so much more feature-rich than the FX3 despite having to use external VMount batteries. As for which setup is more popular, depending on the region, niche and clientele-class, the C70(especially in my state in Switzerland) is more often seen in the hands of production companies/agencies than the FX3. @@iconstantine Yeah that’s totally fair. I think the R5c is an awesome camera (though not without its quirks) and I have a lot of things I don’t like about the FX3, but there’s no denying the value proposition of the FX3, even several years after release. As for ISO you have to be careful on the FX3 as 3200-10000 are going to look better on most other cameras, but knowing this you just go to 12800 and kiss those problems goodbye.

@@GriffinConway Raw isn't an option for me due to the file size, but I need higher resolution for reframing and stabilizing a 4K master. Would I love to have full frame? Yes, but at the moment, I'm sticking with what I got.

@@benp712 You should get a great deal on a C70. A lot of this buzz is hype. Once it dies down the best camera in the world will be the one you have in your hands. C70 is plenty good if you love what you are shooting.

Seems like a great time to buy the C70 as the price drops a lot ha. I don’t want to buy rf mount lenses as they’re not compatible with Arri cameras so don’t seem future proofed - although your RF 24-105 does look impressive. There actually is rf > pl focal reducers now (not cheap though) so I’d just hire one if I was using PL glass. Think the C70 will hold up for years to come as I generally shoot people and don’t want 6k to see all of their blemishes (you made a fair point about diffusion filters though). Interesting point about preferring long SDI cords. I’ve never had issues with 7m HDMI cords but hear the signal can drop out with longer cords 🤷 guess you can get HDMI input monitors that output SDI to get around that (maybe the extra price isn’t worth it though)

Hey Griffin! I've owned a C70 since launch and used it a lot, thanks for your thoughts. I was hoping you might mention build quality and the LCD screen, as that is probably my biggest gripe with my C70. I'm really hoping there is an improvement. Other than that I'd love the triple ISO and SDI but it wouldn't change my life so it might be sensible to hold off for a bit. Funny as well but with your side by side, I still find myself seeing a more organic and (sigh, I know) filmic vibe with the C70, but most of the production companies and corporate clients I work with would probably value the sharpness of the C80 more so there we go.

In my opinion it makes total sense to buy a c400. It has no codec limitations, more connections, CF express and a more appealing form factor. Then you also have the lens servo connection which makes it the perfect convo with the 24-105 RF 2.8. I'm upgrading from the c300 mkiii to the c400. I just love that body type. One thing I found really interesting is the power consumption of the C80. Even with the added 6k sensors, the downscaling and the 12g SDI port, you are still getting about 2hours shooting 4k XFAVC, oddly you get even more when shooting raw! Lol. At the highest power draw is pulling about 19watts, very similar to the sony fx6, while the c400 is pulling about 31watts vs lets say the FX9 pullling 36watts, or the Burano at 50watts. The C80 still sips battery even with the higher resolution sensor and sdi port. It's does really feel like a generation leap for sure.
