This lens is a must buy along with the EF 50mm 1.8 STM. For less than $300 bucks you have two great lenses that are tack sharp. IMO, if you're a beginner DSLR user, you'll develop better photography skills starting off with these two great lenses rather than a zoom lens. Once you get nice sharp shots with these, get an f2.8 zoom lens. Canon SL1 plus 24mm or 40mm pancake is just sublime.

I know its a year later, but which would you recommend for someone to get as their secondary lenses first? Just got a Canon T6i, and I'm debating which one to get. As of right now I've been taking a lot of landscape pictures with the occasional portrait thrown in.
@MacPhantom7 жыл бұрын
RHH973 With a crop camera, I'd get the 50mm (or even a 85mm) for portraits, and the 24mm for everyday/street photography. I personally have the 50mm, but I actually use my 100mm f/2.8 macro more for portraits despite the slower aperture (it's sharper and I prefer the longer focal length).

I have two different modes for photography: Going out to shoot, or going out and carrying a camera with me. If I am going to shoot, I have big heavy lenses. If I'm going out or somewhere new with no real "intent" to shoot, then this or the 50mm is my lens - it makes the camera SO much more manageable and easy to keep in my backpack!

Finally I found a comparative review between the 24mm prime and the 18-55mm kit lenses. As an amateur with an APS-C, this video is the final hammer on the nails that convinced me to keep my gear just comprising 3 lenses (55-250mm, 50mm & 18-55mm) to cover for all my amateur needs and skills. I can save my money for a 24mm or 35mm with bigger f stop. Any recommendations?
@ronjenkins42575 жыл бұрын
One thing to point out is that this lens will focus at objects very close. It's obviously not a macro lens, but it will take shots of objects that are very close to the lens. This capability distinguishes it from the kit lens.

Well, I have one and I just did a "taste test" in comparing a 18--55mm kit lens (mine does f4.5 when at 24mm) and the difference is pretty stark. For my test, with ambient light coming through the windows, at 400 ISO the 24mm was slightly brighter than the kit lens at 800 ISO. At 400 ISO the kit lens image was WAY too dark.

Thanks for your review! I had really planned to get this lens, but now I'm not sure. I have the 18-135, which I find heavy to carry around after a while. That's why I wanted the 24. The f/2.8 aspect sounded exciting, but now that you pointed out the lack of IS, it doesn't sound that different than the f/4 the kit lens has at that focal length. Another option I've thought of now is to add the 18-55 kit lens for when I don't want the extra weight of the 18-135, e.g. at parties. It's not as small as the pancake, and it's slightly heavier (7.2 oz vs 4.2 oz), but it leaves me the option of zooming - which I'm afraid I would miss with the prime. Any thoughts between these two lenses (18-55 kit vs 24 f/2.8)?? (I should mention I don't video at all so far, just use it for stills. And this is on a T5i.)

@MCGrigg-es7tu10 жыл бұрын
you said,on the crop body the 40mm(cropped to 65ish)will give you more control over dof than it on a ff body(40mm),this is untrue,the the crop sensor does it use the centre of the lens,so you will still get the same compression of the background(dof) but the focal length will be 60mm.I other word it is the same as take the photo on a ff body and than cropping it in to be equal to a 60mm
@photorectoby10 жыл бұрын
This is true but that is also like saying I bought a large pizza, eating part of it and then saying you bought a medium pizza. Sure that is true but it doesn't make sense to say crop each time. Straight out of the camera shooting with the 40mm gives you more control over depth of field. That is my statement and I am sticking to it :)
@MCGrigg-es7tu10 жыл бұрын
Okay,I get that but to use it on a crop sensor will give you more dof,losing that advantage your taking about,it simply physics the more space for light to go throw(lens aperture)and be connected(sensor),the more room for light to stray and give you less dof/control over dof.
@photorectoby10 жыл бұрын
M.C. Grigg But I was comparing it to the 24mm which will only be used on a crop sensor camera and when you compare the 24mm to a 40mm on a crop sensor camera you see a difference in depth of field at the longer focal length 40mm.
@okaro65955 жыл бұрын
What nonsense. 40 mm cannot be 60 mm. 40 mm is 40 mm. If you use same focal length on a smaller sensor you will get LESS depth of field but to understand this you have to view the depth of field as an abstract concept and forget totally what you are shooting.

Excellent review as always, Toby! I suppose you have to draw the line at some focal length in this discussion, but the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens is another good, fairly inexpensive prime lens (with current rebate, only about $420). It is very sharp, and also very small and light. Tamron makes a similar 60mm macro lens, which is 2.0, but it is somewhat more expensive. I think it is not liked as much, reviews-wise, but I may be wrong. As far as the 24mm pancake, as an SL1 user (also have a 60D), I will DEFINITELY be getting it.

True - there are a handful more lenses I could chat about and the 60mm macro is a nice one, there is even a 28mm f/2.8 IS that I forgot about. A few others have commented the same- The SL1 and the 24mm pancake is a lovely combo.

For those doing video, I can see the 24 STM having a great advantage. I seldom do video, mostly stills. So I prefer a larger aperture for lower light. I had purchased the sigma 30 but found the focus very inconsistent. I also purchased the dock, but it didn't help bc it sometimes front focused, sometimes back. Only about half of the shots were in the middle. This was on a tripod with a stationary object. I sent lens and dock back and bought the Canon 28mm f1.8 USM and it blows the Sigma away with fast accurate focus even at 1.8. And yes, I took some shots with the sigma stopped down to 1.8 before sending it back to be fair. I do like that focal length 24-30 on the cropped sensor, especially in confined areas.

I'm using a T4i. I understand I could have received a bad copy. I did some research before buying and saw several focus issues but figured it just needed calibration with the dock. After I experienced the problem I was able to find others with that same inconsistency. No worries, though. B&H took care of the return and I'm happy with the Canon 28.

Regarding your statement that this EF-S 24mm lens comes out to be 38mm equivalent on a crop sensor camera (paraphrasing there). Correct me if I'm wrong, which I very well may be, but I have always been under the impression that the 1.6x crop factor only comes into play when using a full frame (EF) mount lens on a crop sensor camera. Since this is a EF-S mount lens, designed for crop sensors, it is my understanding that the 1.6x crop factor is not relevant in this case and that in the case of a EF-S lens on a crop sensor, 24mm is a true 24mm equivalent. In other words, using the EF-S 24mm lens on a crop sensor is the same as using the EF 24mmon a full frame...either way it's a true 24mm equivalent. It is my understanding that the whole point of the EF-S lens mount is to negate the whole 1.6x crop factor issue. What am I missing?
@photorectoby10 жыл бұрын
You are wrong :) I know it is so annoying, why do they mark a lens that is clearly ONLY used on a crop sensors with a full frame equivalent. But my statement is 100% correct as you can see from Canon's website. You need to multiple 24*16 even though it is EFS.
@jayyaj705010 жыл бұрын
CameraRec Toby So you're saying that the EF 24mm lens and the EFS 24mm lens will have the same field of view on my 60D? Not disagreeing with you of course, you're the pro and all, but that sounds really weird. Makes me wonder what the point of an EFS lens actually is. BTW, thanks for letting me pick your brain here.
@photorectoby10 жыл бұрын
Jay Yaj Yes - they will look exactly the same on the camera. The point of an EFS lens is it can only be mounted on a APS-C or crop sensor camera and they are smaller and lighter because they don't need to cover as large a sensor.

I'm presently working on videos for KZbin in which I pretty much stand in front of a dark blue bed sheet and talk (0001 - Intro: Welcome to the WAY). I set my 18-55mm kit lens to 24mm, but even with my lighting, the video looked a little too dark and I had to boost the ISO a bit. Do you think the extra stop of brightness would be worth the $149 price, or should I be willing to spend more on something that does 2.0 or 1.8?
@photorectoby10 жыл бұрын
It is a tricky balance between more light by opening up your aperture but you still want enough depth of field that if you move backward and forward you don't drift out of focus. What ISO are you at for that clip?
@mstrainjr10 жыл бұрын
CameraRec Toby Honestly I don't remember, but I think it's 400. If I go any higher it gets noticeably grainier in the dark areas. I suppose for my purposes that doesn't matter too much, especially since I'm just starting out, but I want to look at least a little professional.

M. Strain Jr. I'd say try the 24mm at f/2.8 - that will keep it brighter and allow you to stay at 400 or even go up a little from 400 but with brighter exposure the shadows will be less. Hey I'm not sure if you have touched upon this topic but I was just looking at some of the other lenses that you mentioned in the video too and they cost around £400. I am now using the canon 550d (kit lens) and was thinking of either upgrading my lens or my camera (70d or something similar). Is investing on a better body or lens more worth it? I know upgrading the body would mean spending about £800. But I'm just curious which would be a better investment (and of course if it is upgrading the body, I'll be sticking with the kit 18-135 lens for awhile more) ?

Nice review, I learned a lot about the differences between the lenses. I got one question. Is this 24mm also appropriate for landscape photography?
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
Wouter Vanhorenbeek It is a nice focal length for general photography including landscapes.

Should I change EF 40mm to EFS 24mm if I only have APSC camera?

The only reason I'm confined to STM lenses is I have difficulty finding lenses that are quite enough to use with my Canon 70D for video, and still be relatively quiet. Do you have any recommendations for silent lenses that would work with my 70D? Thanks!

What lens do you have on the last camera?...Assuming it's the Mark III.

great review. I just bought the 40 mm f2.8 STM and thought it was silent like the 18-135 for video in autofocus, but it's not and I am returning. Before I totally give up, I was wondering if the 24 is silent. I have a feeling it isn't. I shoot with the canon c100 and even with a shotgun attached, the autofocus is so loud I can't use it. Your thoughts?
@zachmaxwell99788 жыл бұрын
+gigifaraci If you thought the 40mm is unusable, unfortunately the 24mm won't be much better in my opinion. It is quieter, but you'll still notice it if you're shooting in silent situations where you would have noticed the 40. You may want to research higher price bracket primes to get silent (sorry, don't have any suggestions there as i'm a "starving artist" myself lol..)

Hi, I'm looking to getting a new lens for my t5i to shoot my student film. It's going to be my version of a spaghetti western, so I want a wide lens. What would you recommend?

I have the 40mm. Should I buy a 24mm ?

Great video, I’ve got the 24mm, 50mm and the kit lens. My kit lens however doesn’t have IS, probably due to getting it with the 1300/T6 and not something more expensive. I use the 50 and the 24 much more than the kit lens but yes, the 24 would be better at 2.0

They offer same bodies with IS and without. IMO that is trulu confusing.

Hi, nice review !! I have an T3i (non STM support), Will this lens work on it? I used generally for film featuring. Can I use with Manual Focus? Thanks in Advance ! Sebastian
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
+Sebastián Krupnik It will work but you won't get the continuous AF - that is a feature of the cameras T4i and newer. You can use manual focus.

+Sebastián Krupnik - Deca Films Argentina my 40mm STM works great on even year 2004 released EOS 300x and EOS 30, so don't worry much, compatible

will the canon pancake 24 lens fit on a gh4 or gh5 with a metabones adaptor?
@SalwanJBinni7 жыл бұрын
Quite interesting! But don't you think that having the prime 24mm can result in sharper images @f/4 compared to the kit lens? Since it is faster, sharpness @f4 might mean the sweet spot for the prime...

It's a minor difference. Not enough to really get excited about but I can test again and see if there is a big difference. Thanks

Hi, I loved your review ! I have a question though. Is canon 24mm F/2.8 good for portrait photography? I have been searching for answers but haven't found any.. Would really appreciate for your thoughts. :)
@corinnegrey8 жыл бұрын
+adrian de Guia I would say yes. It is wider than the lenses typically used for portraiture, but you won't have to worry about any contortion from the wideness, making it very viable.

Hi Toby, great video. I was thinking of the canon 17-55 f2.8 as a walkabout lens for my 70d. Any thoughts?
@pascaldelaunay47409 жыл бұрын
Hello Toby, you forgot to mention the Macro capability. You can use it as close as 16 cm compare to 30 cm for the 40mm. It is a nice feature available any time and it is a way better lense for a crop camera, more usable on a daily basis.

I received delivery of my Canon 24mm yesterday but returned it today. I had to apply an amount of force/pressure to attach the lens to my T3i, which is not the case with any other lens I own. After notifying Canon directly, they agree that such force or pressure was not normal.
@photorectoby10 жыл бұрын
Oh Bummer - I did notice that mine seemed quite tight on some of the cameras but still within what I consider normal. You getting a replacement?
@geraldmeredith437710 жыл бұрын
CameraRec Toby I'm getting a refund. After watching your video, I decided that I'd rather have Canon's IS version 24mm lens, which would fit my plans for a full frame body at some point in the not to distant future.

I am glad I found your post. I just received my 24mm lens tonight about 6pm eastern time. I was very excited so I immediately got my T3i and as I began to turn the lens to lock it, I had to use quite a bit of force. As you said, none of my other lenses are like this. I also had the same problem removing it. I loved the photo's I shot but I don't want to ruin my sensor ring. I am not an amateur but not quite a pro so I am skittish with thing's I don't know about. I was going to call Canon also. I am so glad I found this. I do want an exchange. However, I'm afraid after reading the reply that this is just how they are.

Great Channel, I have learned alot from all your videos, I almost had that pancake ordered, glad I watched this video. I have been looking at the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras, is it safe to say I could get the same image quality out of this lens that I would have gotten out of the prime type lens but then I have more options with zoom and IS? This would be my first upgrade lens from my Canon 60d 18-135 kit lens, I have a priority for video and everyday use photos 2nd.

Canon have made an EF 24mm f/2.8 IS USM if you like the focal length and f-stop but want image stabilization. I don't know about image quality though.
