I've had this lens for nearly a year. It makes my T6i so small that it fits (tightly, but fits) in my mirrorless camera holster bag, and the only way to end up with a bad photo with this lens is to miss the focus. I have the classic "nifty fifty" EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens which is 85mm equivalent on the crop body but it suffers from being like a mid-telephoto lens due to that crop, making shooting in several situations more difficult. The 38mm equivalence of the 24mm lens is so much more versatile. The only advantage that my limited 50mm still has is the nice wide f/1.8 aperture which makes a huge difference in dark conditions. I find that despite owning 5 lenses for my camera I always end up with the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 on it at some point.

I shoot mostly full frame on a 6D these days but every so often I like to take the old T3i out and shoot with the EF-S. Update: I returned the junky Sigma due to autofocus issues and got the Canon 24mm pancake. Couldn't be happier! This lens is sharp, responsive, and absolutely perfect for travel. The field of view is fantastic. I don't miss zooming at all. Grab this lens, get out there, and zoom with your feet! My only complaint is that it isn't good for video because it doesn't have IS, and Canon cameras don't have sensor stabilization. But still, the lens is more than worth the cheap price.

Very nice review, as always. This lens is actually one of the reasons I have decided to get a crop sensor body again, to replace the 100D/SL1 that I owned, but sols, thinking I would't' miss it when I went full frame. I was wrong, I did! That body was great with the 40mm pancake, but it's 64mm equivalent meant it was not quite useful as a general purpose lens. I did however buy a copy of the EF-S 24mm for my brother who shoots APS-C, so I have had the time to test it and view a LOT of images taken with it, and I can attest to Dustin's statements about the lens being a no-brainer. It is perhaps not to the level of the 22mm f/2 Eos-M lens, that is just phenomenal, but almost. The one thing I haven't had the chance to test is the bokeh, of course it is not the typical use for this lens, but I wonder what your thoughts are about that Dustin?

I'm thinking of that combo on my 200D. The 50mm is beautiful but the narrow field of view is frustrating when I can't use my feet to zoom. 24mm would be ideal with 40mm on crop.

The lens I prefer when I travel. I use my pancake 80/90% of the time on my 100D/SL1. The only limit I've found is on on dark places or during the night, when autofocus becomes slower and you have to push the ISO up. I agree with Dustin, why not more lenses like this!

Thanks for the great review. I've just bought this lens for my EOS 600D/Rebel T3i/Kiss X5, loaded with the Magic Lantern hack. I'm really looking forward to using it. If I like it, I'll be looking into purchasing its 40mm big brother. The 1.6 crop factor, gives the 40mm an equivalency of a 64.8mm f/4.54 lens on a full frame sensor. I like short telephoto lenses and this will work well.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I now have the lens. It really is a little sweety. I love using it. It easily lives up to your glowing assessment. I also bought a JJC clone lens hood. It's an odd little thing. It does actually cut down on flare. That really surprised me. The genuine Canon ES-52 hood, is ridiculously expensive. I think It must be made out of gold 🤣. I keep a Hoya, slim frame UV filter on the front of the hood for added protection. There's no additional vignetting, even when it's swapped out for a Hoya CIR-POL UV filter. Attach a 12mm extension tube to the lens and it becomes a very useful close up/macro lens. The Canon EFS 24mm f2.8 STM lens is shockingly impressive. For anyone using a Canon APS-C crop sensor camera, you need to have this lens in your kit bag. It's not even close to being expensive. It's a real gem 👍!

Hey Dustin, thanks for all your accurate and complete reviews. I am already using a full frame system but I'm getting a Canon M5, in order to downsize the weight during my mountain experiences, so i will certainly get an adaptor ring to use my FF lens on the M5 as well. So I am asking your opinion about buying this 24mm or the M version of the 22mm. Thanks again!

Great review (enjoy your others as well, very thorough) I'm actually torn between this and the Tamron 35mm 1.8. I only have the canon kit 18-55 and would like something that's a good throw-on lens that gives me better bokeh then the kit - that's why I'm leaning towards the Tamron + the pseudo macro, but what a price difference. I think the canon 50mm is just too tight for me (on crop). I like landscape, macro and occasional portraits. Would you take one over the other? Thanks once again for the great reviews. I've been researching lens like crazy and it has gotten to the point where your channel is one of the first places I search :)
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 жыл бұрын
The Tamron definitely has a much higher end rendering than this lens. The EF 24 STM is good for sharpness, but I didn't feel its overall rendering or out of focus area was overly special.

@DustinAbbottTWI

Will you be handholding the camera? A lack of stability might impact you if so. You might consider using some kind of glide cam type stabilizer or gimbal for the best results. This is a very good video lens when used like that.

Hi Dustin, you mentioned not liking to manually focus with an STM lens. Why is that? Thanks and great review!
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 жыл бұрын
STM lenses use a focus by wire system, which means that the focus ring doesn't actually move the elements. That input is routed through the focus motor, and thus there is a "disconnected" feeling and also some lag. It is easy to focus past where you want because of that lag.

How would you rate this one vs the 2012 EF 24mm 2.8 IS USM? Obviously this one can only mount to APS-C and the other one has IS but aside from limitations and features I’m curious about image quality comparison. The STM is currently $129usd ($100 used) and the USM is currently $549usd ($400 used) so being at the sub $500 mark leaves them in the running for me (24 isn’t particularly a favorite focal length of mine so I’m leaving the L out of the equation). I’d like to pick up whichever one (of these two 24’s) has a more unquantifiable dreamy factor for artistic applications. :D

I've had this lens for most of a year and only really played with it when I first got it. I may have to dig it out and experiment some more because my initial images were not at all impressive. Of the first dozen photos taken I don't think there was a single 'really' sharp one in the batch. Of course this was on my 60D and I never really tried it on my 7DMarkII.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 8 жыл бұрын
+Randy Dietmeyer Sounds like you may have needed to calibrate the lens to the body (not possible in the 60D). This is a very sharp lens and, properly calibrated to the body, will focus very accurately, too.
@randydietmeyer5883
@randydietmeyer5883 8 жыл бұрын
I hooked the lens back up to my 60D and took some test shots using my SpyderLENSCAL test chart. It had a pretty severe back focus, but because it is a 60D (like you mentioned) there is nothing I can do about it short of sending it to Canon. I then attached it to my 7DII and got the exact same results but since it DOES support microadjustments an entree of -10 zeroed in in pretty good.

I've only seriously been involved with photography for about 3 months and I don't understand the community-wide distaste for vignetting. Obviously it doesn't work for every situation. But I feel it brings more attention to the center of the image and in the past have often added vignetting it post. Just curious. Fantastic review, by the way!
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 5 жыл бұрын
Essentially it is an optical flaw, though one that has a desirable outcome in some situations. The same could be said of certain flare effects. I personally would rather add vignette in post to the images that it benefits than have it applied to all images equally.

Is there a 24mm for full frame that is this good ? I think what it comes down to when you talk about 24mm is that your shooting mainly for landscape or architecture so a need for a really fast aperture is really out of the question because you don’t need it. Your shooting for quality and therefore stopping the lens down. Am I right in saying that buying a fast 24 is a waste of money because of what I just said ? Let alone it’s hard to get DOF on a 24 even at 1.4. Just seems to make sense if you were going to spend less and go for a higher f stop that 24 would be a good place to do it
