My thoughts are, as have just been ill (virus/phlegmmy throat/nose eyes) is all about energy levels. I erg when ill, just to produce a big sweat reflex to catalyze what illness I have to leave the body faster. In terms of sessions, I wouldn't do interval sessions, whereby I need to be at my best, but longer low rate rows (produce more sweat) and at a lower intensity than normal. This would ensure that my fitness is topped up when ill. When symptoms are gone I yam on it. I also do not take anything (pills, powders, syrups) so I'm stronger next time. Rowing is a tough sport, and you need to be tough, mentally and physically. Cant throw in the towel when you have a cold. On a sidenote, the footage about 1:16 in, is beautiful. How did you film that? It seems like a standalone camera on rotate or on a dolly? Please spill the beans.

I always rather take the time off rather than force the body to try and get rid of the illness. Just had bad experiences of digging a hole I can't get out of! Definitely no intervals though! The footage is from a 360 camera!

I must admit that there are times when you can work through not feeling your best and surprise yourself by having a killer workout. "BUT," if you are running a temp, don't be tempted to work through it... Your boat was running like a scalded dog today. Good work!

Wise words once more and a good topic for this time of year. I've known a lot of athletes who battle through and just end up going backwards!

Exactly my point James! Sometimes you have to slow down to go forwards!

This is a great subject Cam and I think you nailed it - especially taking an extra day off. The body will be ready to return to normal day to day activity a bit before it is ready for the additional stress of training.

I agree with everything you said, Cam. My rules of thumb: if you are running a fever stay home. That is your body's immune response to an infection. If you have a gastrointestinal upset stay home. These can be very contagious such as the norovirus (cruise ship sickness ) and you don't want to be the guy who introduces THAT to the crew. For 24 hours you wish that you could die but your wish is rarely granted. Seriously, norovirus can serially wipe out any team for about a week as it is passed around. On the preventative side be sure to get flu shots.

Hey Cam, say if you are the person who continued to train while ill and had the snowball effect-what is your next course of action?
@CameronBuchan4 жыл бұрын
Pretty much the same, if you're ill, don't train. If you've been ill but been training and it's worse, don't train. Listen to your body and try to recover!
