My friend, thank you so much. I'm 3 years into my guitar journey, can play most of my fav songs pretty well but was stuck playing the same pentatonic lines over and over. It never occurred to me to take a chunk of a scale and play it up and down in a shifting pattern. I've worked on my alternate picking for a couple of weeks using some of your techniques here and it's made a massive difference to me. Still can't follow the metronome at high speed but I can't expect that without spending some more time. Thank you

I just wanted to say thank you. I feel like this is what I have been missing. I've been playing for about 15 years and to be honest. I suck. To a non player I am sure I sound like a pro but i have zero improv. I skipped a lot of the basics so I could sound cool lol. 15 years later struggling to find my groove I feel like this video was it. these simple tricks and patterns really helped me find my groove and travel up and down the fretboard. Thank you so much

@@CameronCooper You very well deserve it ,….I’m a lead player also,… I taught myself my own unique style of running up and down the fretboard ,..Basically improvising , But the first time I saw your video,…it was “Steal these licks “, I could practice right along with you and for the first time in my life ,..understand every detail , I can see your picking also which is what I needed help with . I practiced about a week on one lick and unlocked a new approach ,speed and the walls came down. I’ve been recording your videos so I always have them . ..just wanted to say Thanks ,..and You are a no. 1 at teaching and Shredding. 🎸 ,..I’m gonna catch up,…I might be 90 but I’ll get there.

Hey Cameron,.. I’m telling you man,..when I put a video of you and then you got this great trick to teach people…where you show one little section ,..like a mini lick,..and then you’ll say ,..experiment with that for a while ,….or youll say like,… this is a killer lick all on its own . …that’s how you helped me out because I’ll find one riff like that ,…which I need to work on that weak spot but I’ll pause your video and be jamming through all types of variations,…and then 30 minutes later ,I realize I’m still on the 1rst or 2nd lick,….it’s crazy ,…thanks ,…yeah you should keep those teaching tricks in your tool bag,..cause that’s what gets motivated Guitarists experimenting and then improving ,..

Noticing how you start with upstrokes, I deeply relate. Years ago I used to watch all these tutorials for fast alternate picking starting with downstrokes and never worked for me. It was one day that sort of came as a revelation that I was able to play those licks if I started with upstroke, and I never trained or practiced them like that before. It possibly had to do with my general way of picking or bad habits that are deeply engraved in my head, that just makes it easier for me to process alternate picking with an upstroke
@Jarrodpimental
@Jarrodpimental Жыл бұрын
This USUALLY depends on the angle you naturally hold the pick. Tip pointing up or down. And that has to be pointed out when someone tells you to start on a down stroke.

Yep your physiology, nervous system etc dictate those sort of things. Eg I can only kick with my left foot and I practiced for year's diligently with my right with no joy. I can only wink with my right eye no matter how much I try with my left. I can't do the Spock live long and prosper symbol because my middle and index fingers have too much connective tissue. You can't really directly copy anyone it's much more important to be natural and find your own way or you'll endlessly be frustrated 😀

Hi Cameron! I had to tell you how much I appreciate this lesson for a strong personal reason: I like shred lines and wish to play them but everything I had found teaching some of them involved some very intensive left hand pinky work (especially pull-offs). Well, mine is busted with arthritis and it's just impossible for me to drive it like crazy as it results in painful inflammation. I've been following you for a good while and had noticed that you played extremely well with a nice aggressive drive yet weren't constantly using the pinky. A lot of the stuff that you just showed I can practice and so man, you're saving my life here!

I love this video. This proves that there really are no rules for playing guitar. There are so many different ways to play guitar. Whatever technique allows you to play your very best, is the correct way to play. This is a real fact, and one that's sadly overlooked by so many guitarists. Any technical fingering can be adjusted or manipulated into whatever works best for that individual. This is a great example of that. 😊

I just recently in my guitar playing journey started to alternate pick with decent speed. What got me there was how I held the pick at a downward angle with only the front edge tip of the pick making contact with the strings. I also tried to limit my economy of motion. Smaller compact pick strokes. Made a world of difference.

Left hander who plays right-handed guitar player here. I got better by watching my right hand and focusing on the brain/right hand & arm/pick grip feedback. Before that I'd done hundreds of hours of scales & drill practices with or without a metronome---with very little limited results. My right hand dexterity was limiting my two-handed sync--at higher levels of guitar playing. Then I started watching my right hand and focusing on the brain feedback. That's when magic started to happen.

Hey, you’re left-handed and play right handed guitar like Steve Morse! I saw a clinic with him back in the 90s and he explained that playing guitar where he holds the pick with his right hand and frets with his left hand Is the smart way to do it because his left hand has to do all the work, and it is his strong hand. It made a lot of sense, but I didn’t want to have to buy more expensive left-handed guitars so I kept with the way that I had learned how to play.
