Camille I understand you're in love, but you are embracing a language that evokes bitter memories for the majority non-white population of South Africa. Afrikaans to them meant oppression, humiliation, an absolute denial of basic human rights (the tongue of the brutal oppressor). Detention without trial, & death while under interrogation. Check out the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, all those crimes perpetrated in the Afrikaans language. Then they were forced to speak this oppressive language, hence the Soweto school riots of 1976 where Afrikaans speaking police shot, killed, & wounded many school children. There were the protests which evolved into riots because of Afrikaans speaking police at the University of the Western Cape 1973 (a Coloured, mixed race ) university where students were forced to receive all lectures in Afrikaans even though their mother tongue was English. This is just the tip of the ice burg of the recent oppressive legacy of Afrikaans in South Africa. No matter how beautifully you dress it up with rhythm, & rhyme, tragically to many, it remains the cold echoes of brutality down the hallways of detention centers, police stations,& humiliation at the workplace, verbal abuse on sidewalks, in Afriaaner homes to the ears of domestic workers, not to forget every bureaucratic institute i.e licensing departments etc.where everyday business was handled. Not a hundred years ago. very recent, & sadly still in rural areas,& farms. Nee, Afrikaans is nie n pragtige taal nie!

So someone should feel guilty for speaking a language because it is used by some of its speakers to oppress others? You're assuming that Afrikaans' only purpose is as a tool for oppression and that it has no other value, which ignores the fact that it is used by many of its speakers in a non-oppressive way. Also consider that any language can be used for oppression and that speaking a certain language does not necessitate a certain ideology. I would also like to add that you are, in a way, perpetuating the problem that you have brought up, since here we have Camille doing something non-oppressive with Afrikaans and you are trying to talk her out of it.

@@williams7787 There is a move by racist South Africans to sanitize, & sanctify the instruments of white privilege, neo-nazi ideology to the west as they cannot tolerate black governance, & try to emigrate to western countries. In New Zealand, the indigenous people are already feeling the racist, condescending,& disrespectful attitude of these new immigrants from South Africa. To aggravate the situation they show off by speaking Afrikaans loudly saying disparaging things about their hosts in public. They have not changed, & are using unsuspecting individuals to propagate their nefarious agenda. They have not shown any remorse for their legacy of hatred, suffering, pain,& injustice. Instead, they are playing the victim to win sympathy. Camille, why not sing in Zulu or any native tongue?

Apache maybe you are the oppressor that you despise so much. Find the 12 foot supporting beam in your own eye before casting judgment on others.

Apache, English is also historically a language of oppression, and so is French and German... Should we stop speaking and singing in those languages too? And by the way... many people who were oppressed by Afrikaans speakers were Afrikaans speakers themselves, as was the case with the English and the French and the German oppressions and colonisations! And if we dig a little deeper, we will find the same in many other languages. These ones are just the most famous and recent. Oh! and let's not forget the Dutch, who sent the first white oppressors to Cape Town and enslaved the local people, as well as the Malay and other nations and brought them to the Cape as slaves. Did you know the Malay slaves were instrumental in the development of Afrikaans as a language? Did you know that Afrikaans has a lot of words that are of Malay origin? And did you know that the English created the first concentration camps during the Boer war and kept not only Afrikaans speakers but also people of all other races in South Africa in these death camps, where most of them died of hunger, exposure and starvation? Be careful how a LITTLE bit of knowledge can make you VERY one-dimensional in your views. And please, let's move the heck on now. It's over. South Africa has a hard enough time moving forward without outsiders trying to keep us living in the past.

@@minniedesaivre7903 Your litany of colonial demonic escapades across the globe in the name of civilization, after they decimated the European continent is elementary school History. Depending on where you were educated of course. The Anglo Boer war was a canine-like growl, rip,& tear by two colonial powers over a marrow filled bone in a strange and beautiful land. The Boers were not victims as they would like to portray themselves. They were co-conspirators, which their legacy thereafter proved to be so. THEY WANTED THE JUICY BONE. With hindsight, most colonial powers have shown remorse for the atrocities committed to indigenous peoples, some even by paying restitution, except a handful of which the South African white is one. Instead, they are cunningly attempting to slip out of the perpetrators cloak into that of the victim. In order for you to move on as racist white S.Africans, you need to deal with the past,: "Bring forth, therefore, fruits meet for repentance ." Matt. 3:8 Scripturally speaking. Deafening is the cry of countless innocent souls of black, brown,& white victims ripped from their loved ones during the apartheid era in the name of white supremacy. Like the souls under the altar of Revelations, they cry out "how long". Your language will not be hoisted as victor's flags across the globe. There are too many alive who know your dark history. Using foreigners to sing in this language was tried before. In the sixties an American singer with a great established career tried to sanitize Afrikaans to the world to his detriment, he made an Afrikaans album in phonetics and made a movie called "Kimberley Jim." I am referring to Jim Reeves. This move destroyed his career in the US. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all the people all the time. Today you'll be lucky to find an American who knows who Jim Reeves was. Believe me, he HAD A BEAUTIFUL VOICE, BUT HE WAS USED,& PAID THE PRICE. viz.HIS CAREER. Humble yourself, & repent & you'll be exalted.
