Wonderful story and beautiful photography. So happy to watch a Camino that doesn't treat the Camino as a check off someone's bucket list. Loved the serenity of the trail in winter. Do a follow up on the challenges walking in the winter poses. Was there any time when you couldn't find accommodations. It seems we older folks, who are tortugas, make the jpurney successfully. Nothing succeeds like persistence, said President Calvin Coolidge.

Wow, Thank you! I never had a problem with accommodation, a hospitalero at one of the first albergues recommended I use the aprinca website. .www.aprinca.com/alberguesinvierno/ It was always kept up to date with all the open albergues at the end of each stage.

I have walked the Camino's Frances and Portugues. My first thought when I watched this video was way too cold and solitary a time to walk the Camino for me, but then I got to thinking how fortunate you were to have walked it just before the pandemic changed everything and who knows how long it will be before I can walk the Camino again. Good video. Thanks.

Enjoyed that, Rolf. I added your video to my public playlist "Camino de Santiago: documentaries". I have some questions: ― How busy was the Camino in late autumn? ― How many Albergues / cafés / bars en route are open? ― Did you take a bigger backpack for the extra clothing you'd likely need? Anyway, thanks for posting. It's good to see a Camino filmed out of season.

I am glad you enjoyed it. As to your questions. There were few pilgrims on the route in winter... I just finished the Frances for the second time a few weeks ago and I started in mid October and there were still plenty of pilgrims. Most places along the Frances close November 1st. But Aprinca publishes a lust of albergues that stay open. You don't need a bigger backpack for winter...

Hi, There was always an albergue open at the end of each daily stage, but the closer you get to XMAS there are less so you really have to stick to the list of open albergues that is published and updated online. www.aprinca.com/alberguesinvierno/ There were some small towns where all the cafes and restaurants were closed... but all in all it was never really an issue. Sorry to bug you and if I am just let me know. Haha. Anyway, did you find it difficult to got lodging or were there portions of the trail that were unpassable?

How much to cost and weight does December add to the Camino Frances? Lovely video produced by just a mobile phone. Thanks.
@mycustomais4 жыл бұрын
I am not sure about the extra cost, but I can say you need extra layers of clothing and some good boots. I carried more than I should have.
@rolfscaminos4 жыл бұрын
My pack weighed about 12 kg total, about 3 more than I should have been carrying.

Is there a video of your packing list for this hike? My wife and I are debating over how many pairs of shoes you took with you.
@rolfscaminos3 жыл бұрын
Hi Roberto, I don't have a packing list right now but I am finishing a spreadsheet that calculates the weight of everything you pack. If you use a Mac I can send it to you. For my walk I used a pair old hiking boots and a pair of sneakers as they were well worn in... I never got any blisters. Initially I took with a pair of flip flops to use in the showers at the albergues, but I got rid of them as did't really use them as it was too cold. I do recommend you use some very high quality socks as they will keep your feet dry and blister free. I took 3 pairs of Wigwam brand Hiking socks, I highly recommend them. As far as clothing I took more than I really needed and got rid of some stuff along the way. Most albergues or hostels have washer - driers, so if you take clothes for 3 days you will not have to wash clothes every day. Hope this is of some help.

@rolfscaminos4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, I started in Roncesvalles on November 20 and Finished in Santiago on December 24th... exactly one year ago. ;) There were very few pilgrims, specially towards the end, due to the holidays.

How did you film @0.11 intro where your walking toward the camera and @0.44 shoot of your boots while walking? How did you position your Samsung phone? Did you used a tripod?
@rolfscaminos4 жыл бұрын
I am glad you ask as I was alway laughing at how I would set up my phone... I actually never had the intention of making a youTube video out of it... I just was messing around with my new phone could do as I bought in Pamplona a few days into the walk. I didn't have a tripod... hence all the low angles. I just found some large stones and sturdied the phone by placing one in front and one in the back..:) But I actually ended up liking the angles, and probably would never would have gotten so low down otherwise. Once in a while I would put the phone on the muddy embankment or on the guard rail or a Camino milage marker on the side of the camino to get a higer view. For the boot shots and most of the ones where you I am filming myself I had a super cheap 10 euro selfie stick... Amazingly enough my phone survived without a scratch. :) Hope that was of some help to you...

The fade out in the intro was done in the edit by doing a fade to the same scene without me in it...

@@rolfscaminos You did a fantastic job on your hack-tripod. I'm still contemplating whether to bring my mirrorless camera and a GoPro on my next year Camino de Santiago.

I actually just bought a Insta360 and have been testing it and love it. I messed up a lot of footage with the phone on this walk as I didn't always pay attention to the settings. :)
