@lemsip20714 күн бұрын
The outfits at weddings are so ridiculous and most of the women and girls are in white not just the bride and bridesmaids. The men are getting drunk at the bar. There are middle-aged women in bodycon dresses consisting of basically a white corset top attached to a white skirt and white lace sleeves. The bride and bridesmaids are caked with makeup to look much older. There was one video where the bride looked 12 from behind because of the size of her head compared to her body as if she hadn't finished growing. Her bridesmaids did wear nice dresses, though with kneelength full skirts and sleeves to just above the elbows.

The crazy thing is, gypsies in my country mostly start families at around 14years old. It's 'normal' that they have around 8 children. I am always shocked when an 18 year old girl tells me she already has two kids 😭 Sometimes the guys don't even ask the girl if they want to marry, but go to the dads to ask them and then the dads tell them that they are getting married, it's insane
@izzilarkins39495 ай бұрын
Just throwing it out there that the whole "asking the father's permission" before proposing thing really is not at all far removed from these guys asking to take ownership of the daughter. Both are just vestiges of the idea that women are the property of men in their life, and I think both need to be seriously challenged
@jaykilkenny57275 ай бұрын
I agree, though asking the father for marriage to me seems just as tradition. Though personally, I'd ask both parents rather than just the father. It makes sense to me anyway because what if the person asking isn't the right type of crowd for the daughter, or what if the person asking is doing it for personal gain? Though I do understand the whole "man's property thing," it can also just show respect to the parents.
@Aurora_Lightbringer5 ай бұрын
It's mostly just a tradition and it's supposed to be symbolic, but yes, you are somewhat correct. It was originally used as actual ownership in a very loose form, as a woman's job was traditionally to serve her family and then her husband once she'd "decided" to make her own family.
@HerHollyness5 ай бұрын
I actually agree with this take. My father is no longer with us, but if any boyfriend of mine thought he had to ask his or anyone else's permission to propose to me, he'd be kicked to the kerb. My opinion is the only one that matters - my dad has nothing to do with it! I actually have the same opinion about being walked down the aisle - that stems from literally 'being given away' by your father to your husband i.e. "She was my property and now she's yours." Again, he's not here to do so but even if he were I wouldn't want my dad to walk me down the aisle, no matter how 'traditional' it is.
@jaykilkenny57275 ай бұрын
@HerHollyness That's your decision to make. Personally, I'd like a semi traditional wedding. Course I'd be the groom, but I'd prefer to ask my partners mother of father for their acceptance of my marriage to their son or daughter. The same goes for a wedding. It can be very loose and modern, but some things in tact (i.e., wedding march, suits and dresses, white wedding cake) all in all it's all up to the two parties marrying to make a decision of their wedding.
@me66645 ай бұрын
thats because 90% of "traveller culture" is just old fashioned uk culture, especially chav/ned culture, like guys aggressively hitting on women, having mysoginistic views, having massive families, downplaying and tolerating abusive husbands. go back to the 90s and you'll see folk like this everywhere.

"I've just finished watching 'My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding,' and I can't help but feel a mix of emotions. On one hand, the extravagance of the ceremonies and the strong sense of community among the Romani people is truly fascinating. The vibrant colors, the elaborate dresses, and the cultural traditions displayed are nothing short of mesmerizing. It's a colorful celebration of love and family that really stands out in a world where weddings can often seem standardized. However, as I reflect deeper, I can't shake the sense of brutality that accompanies some of the portrayals. While I appreciate the cultural aspects, the show also highlights some uncomfortable truths about tradition and gender roles within these communities. The pressure on young women to conform to certain ideals, particularly regarding their appearances and the expectations placed upon them for marriage, is quite alarming. It raises questions about autonomy, personal choice, and the sacrifices faced by these individuals in the name of tradition. Moreover, the way the series sometimes sensationalizes these practices can lead to harmful stereotypes. It's crucial for viewers to approach this content with a critical lens, recognizing the complexities and nuances of Romani culture that the show might overlook or oversimplify. In a broader sense, the reality show format often thrives on exaggerating certain traits for entertainment, which can perpetuate misunderstandings about the community as a whole. I believe it’s vital to engage in conversations around representation and to seek authentic voices from within the Romani community. Ultimately, this show has opened my eyes to the rich tapestry of traditions while also prompting critical discussions about cultural practices and societal expectations. It’s a reminder that behind the glitz and glamour, there are real stories, real struggles, and a real need for understanding and respect. Let’s hope that through dialogue, we can appreciate the beauty of the culture while also advocating for positive change.”
