As a Scot I’d say people don’t use our word for cigarettes as an excuse to use the hard “F”. Like there are definitely some homophobic people, but they generally express their homophobia using different slurs, the F word is almost entirely associated with cigarettes here. Like I grew up around people casually using homophobic insults, but I didn’t even know the F word was a homophobic slur till I was 13 or something
@shlarla3 ай бұрын
Ive legit never thought about the fact that the word can be a slur 😅 as a smoker in scotland its just second nature to say it and its so normal in conversation. People use different slurs instead if they are being homophobic
@MarshaKlein8425Ай бұрын
@@shlarla Fellow Scot here. I used to work with some lads from Newcastle and Leeds many years ago. They always referred to cigarettes as tabs and I sort of picked it up and have used it ever since. I've always considered the homophobic F word to be very American. I was at school in Denny the 80s and there were the usual slurs implicating someone's sexual preferences but I honestly never heard anyone use that word as a homophobic slur. I think I probably first heard it used that way on one of those awful, 80's, American teen movies

4:25 I believe the word f** for a cigarette came from the old English/ old French word f***** which is sometimes called a short f*****, (As a unit of measurement) a f***** of sticks equals a bundle of wood sticks or billets that is 3 feet (90 cm) in length and 2 feet (60 cm) in circumference. A f***** was also a unit of weight used to measure iron or steel rods or bars totalling 120 pounds (54 kg) also f*****s in Bristol are Pork meat balls (not too sure historically why)

@andromalius88903 ай бұрын
You explained it so much better than I could have
@karebushmarebu2333 ай бұрын
Even when the word was first used in a derogatory sense, it was actually used to refer to an old person that was a burden on their family as opposed to its more modern American usage as an homophobic insult. The reason for this was because by that time the longer form of the word “F**” was used to refer to a bundle of sticks, which would be “burdensome” to carry

As a proud Brit, I can't help but chuckle at all the uniquely British references sprinkled throughout these TikToks. It’s fascinating how they capture the little nuances of our culture that might seem utterly perplexing to those outside the UK. For instance, the constant banter about a “cuppa” tea - it’s more than just a drink; it’s a ritual, a reason to gather, and a way to express comfort and care. I love how these videos highlight the absurdity of our language, like the endless puns on words like "biscuit" versus "cookie" or the legendary debate on the proper toppings for a Yorkshire pudding. And let’s not forget the iconic British weather: the expectation of rain at any moment is something that truly bonds us, isn’t it? The TikToks that depict our stoic acceptance of damp weather, carrying umbrellas while still managing to enjoy a good pint outside, speak volumes about our resilience and sense of humor. Moreover, the references to cultural landmarks, from the cheeky nods to the Tube etiquette to the eccentricity of British television shows, create a tapestry of shared experiences that connect us all. I mean, who doesn’t get a laugh out of the “Is your fridge running?” jokes, or the clever takes on “dinner's ready” when it’s really just beans on toast? It’s these little things-like queueing properly or the ever-looming debate about whether a hot dog is a sandwich-that make us all nod in understanding while others scratch their heads in confusion. It’s remarkable how these seemingly trivial aspects of daily life encapsulate a larger cultural identity. In the end, these TikToks serve as a beautiful representation of the quirks and charms of British life, and they remind us of the bond we share as a nation through humor, food, and the little annoyances that somehow become a part of our unique charm. Cheers to that! 🍵🇬🇧

I think the holiday brand thing is something that's been utilised for a long time even in regular adverts, advertisers want to make their product and use of their product look as good as possible so combining it with an environment that looks visually pleasing and gives off a good vibe is an important tactic to them. They want the customer the relate the product with those feelings.

The shorthand for cigarettes comes from the French term that means "bundle of sticks" and was kind of colloquialised to mean a small branch or thin piece of wood. I think it might have also been the unit of measurement at the time. So it, like many terms, started off innocent at first.
@JasminMiettunen3 ай бұрын
I wonder where the slur came from, what made it a bad word?
@Now_Or_Nova3 ай бұрын
@@JasminMiettunen so my speculative response is twofold. Collecting said bundles of sticks was the work of elderly women in medieval times to make a wage. The term became an insult, joking about being poor I guess. So taking a term you usually call women and targeting "effeminate" men makes sense. This kind of perpuated within British boarding school environments, where older boys would take younger students as servants, and their duties were said to include acts of a certain nature, which had a similar name to the term, because the young boys were "poor" looking for menial work. Then there's the more classical approach of a cigarette, long and thin object, going in your mouth, borrowing the shortened form of it and using it as an insult.
