CamperVan Consumer Unit Build with Inverter and Polarity

This is my new 240v motorhome consumer unit. It can be powered via EHU or an inverter, and checks/reverses polarity when needed.

Very well presented video but no mention of the earthing arrangements. With a suitable earth you could leave out the RCD switches and got straight to RCBOs for each circuit. This would free up 4 ways in the CU and allow to you to subdivide the circuits further or install a smaller CU. The reverse polarity is not normally a problem on AC equipment (for functionality but it is if you only have single pole switches as a circuit that you think is "off" will actually be "on") but you could plug in a polarity tester in a socket in the vehicle and then set your polarity switch to suit. But belt and braces always keep your trousers up, and who wants to be caught with your pants down! Great explanations and graphics and the lack of music was much appreciated. Really professional, RCD at least do not have the preference of neutral input, so there is no need to control or change the polarity, the MCB are bipolar, this applies only to branded components and not cheap, yours is the solution better being mobile! eye that with the inverter having the "neutral" isolated The RCD is inhibited does not go in case of dispersion, for him it would be excellent an insulation controller or a differential relay for isolated neutral Good job

Thank you for this video, it's so helpful - I am looking at doing something very similar myself. I was just wondering, instead of having two RCD's, why didn't you just have one RCD, and trip the individual MCB for the charger when on the inverter?

Thanks so much for this, some great solutions here. Just trying to workout where the battery charger is wired. Is it across the mains input of the EHU/INVERTER switch over? Am I also right in saying "To polarity changer" is to "to polarity checker"

Hi Gary, the 240v charger is attached to one of the MCB's. Is this what you mean? Polarity - yep you are right, it's the cable that goes to the checker (my mistake, not the sharpest at the mo with this bloody flu that's going around)

Very nice panel. Can I ask one question: if you have reverse polarity, how do you ensure your load is isolated before you test the input?

What size mcb’s did you change to? Did you stick with the 80A rcd’s? Aren’t they a little high just for a camper?

I can't remember tbh Andy. I'm going to rebuild this anyway as not happy with it. Will be using double pole MCB's (already here), but not ordered the RCD yet. Will probably go with a 25A version with a 30mA trip. I'll be using two separate (smaller) consumer units. One will be from EHU and just power my 240v charger (would be for 240v heating and water heater as well if I had it), the other will be from a new Victron 2000VA inverter I have and power everything else. The inverter will be on all the time in next build.
