Coleman - 424 Dual Fuel Stove Review.
The 424 is capable of burning Coleman Camp Fuel also known as White Gas and / or Regular Unleaded Gasoline and kicks out 14,000 BTU's with about 7,500 BTU's produced on the main burner and 6,500 BTU's on the secondary burner. Run Time is about Two Hours with Both Burners on High.
We will weigh the pros and cons of using this type of Camp Stove as well as take a look at the various components and construction of this Coleman Stove.
While not as simple to operate as a propane stove this Dual Fuel Stove is a much better choice when choosing a stove to double as an emergency cooking source. With the wide use of Regular Unleaded Gasoline you have more fuel options versus a propane stove. This capability can be a life saver in natural disasters such as hurricanes and blizzards where access to propane may not be possible due to riots, panic buying and or the break down of the local supply chain.
The fuel costs are less than that of a propane stove as well. With one gallon of Camp fuel equalling to that of four and a half portable propane cylinders.
If you read this far you will probably watch the entire video. Please do as I forgot to mention a few things until near the end of the review. I hope the information is useful.
Enjoy!

I have 4 of these, a 1930's 6F , 1966 411A , 1982 425F and a 1983 431. They all work fantastic on regular unleaded gas. Never had an issue with them, I just pull out the generator once a year and give it a few wipes with a green scotch pad and that's it. The 6F weighs a ton with the cast iron burners and a much different flame pattern. Great stoves that last a life time.

I picked up a couple at local thrift stores. $10-$12. One from 1974 the other from 1983. I inherited one and a lantern from my dad. They were both made in 1978. All of them run like new. They would be handy in survival situations.

Ultralight gear is great for hiking and mountaineering, but car camping is more family oriented. These Coleman camp stoves are great! Nowadays, so many people are off doing their own thing...singles, DINKs, etc. Less focus on family life. Yeah, when your young and single, hike the Himalayas. When you have a family, camping isn’t less enjoyable, just different. Liquid fueled camp stoves and lanterns are the best! I love ‘em. The other thing is, last year Hurricane Harvey hit us. All the department stores and sporting goods stores were completely sold out of propane. I still found Coleman fuel and, of course, gasoline.

I just picked one up a 414-700 New in the box at Goodwill today for $20.00 out the door. I even got a VET's discount of 10%. Box showed a lot of storage marks, small tears etc. But when I opened it up it still had the factory tape on the lid to the body. Never been fired up at all. Cardboard that holds the tank in place for shipping was still in it holding the tank. Very good video and so is your video on how to use it. Good refresher for me.

I grabbed one off EBay 25 yrs old never been lighted , all original , factory shipping tape still applied $25 plus shipping.To be honest , a use one from goodwill , a garage sale or other is always great when possible. Simple, easy maintenance an new parts can still be purchased for restoration.Coleman is a great American Co.that has made good products.

Agreed. I think with the whole ultra light weight craze in camping gear, people have forgotten or may not be aware that this type of camping gear still serves its purpose well. Thanks for the input Mike, your comments, shares and votes help me get the word out. I wish I could get through to my subscribers the difference their participation makes. I know that some don't have the ability to vote because of the format they watch my videos on. So I really appreciate your participating. InteliGear.

I just love the Coleman liquid fuel stoves. Wouldn't trade them for anything. I have a 533 that I purchased from WalMart clearance for $30. I also have a 426D 3-burner model that I purchased way back in the late 1960s. I also bought a propane kit for my 426D stove. I really don't consider these to be a dual fuel stove as advertised. Coleman liquid fuel and automotive gas are both gasolines; it's just that automotive gas has additives designed for car engines. To me, a true dual fuel (or multi-fuel) stove will burn, for example, liquid fuel or propane or some other form of fuel (kerosene).

You are absolutely right in your intro when you point out that the Coleman stoves are burning naphta and car gazoline. You can also add kerosen (oil lamp fuel). You do need the option to burn multi fuels with your home kit. And imo, the Coleman stoves are the best way to go budget wise. You canbuy these under $40 used.

Love the video. I've got that stove, a couple of the dual fuel lanterns. They were bought new at Walmart in 2005. And yes they price matched back then. I paid about the same as you back then. Top notch stuff. I also have a couple of the old 1960s / 1970s catalytic heaters as well.... I have yet to use auto gas. I keep plenty of Coleman fuel on hand. They work great. I have propane as well, but VERY MUCH prefer the white gas appliances... Propane is easier to use, White Gas is much more efficient, and environmentally friendly. (No not quite empty hazardous waste propane cylinders to dispose of). You CAN use the propane on a large tank but those require adapters, and if you use a distribution tree, you are tethered to the tank, so say you have a stove, heater, and shower, everything has to be within 8' of the tank...

I was going through my garage and found my old Coleman Duel Fuel stove that I bought in the late 80's. I haven't used it for over 25 years, and when I shook, the tank, I was surprised that there was some white gas still in there. I pumped it up and turned it on, and surprise, it fired right up. I'm letting the old gas burn out right now, but it's burning like it did when it was brand new. How's that for a testimonial to how tough these stoves are?
@dryfuss1955
@dryfuss1955 6 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed they are tough. Same here mine sat on the floor at deer camp for over ten years I have larger propane cookers so it sat unused . I brought it home and it did not want to pump so I replaced the pump and she fired up dandy brewing some coffee om my Cabelas stainless steel coffee pot.

Excellent video and congrats on a great deal! I have several of these ranging from a 425e (a 70's version of this exact model) up to a couple of 426d three burner models that I picked up. These things can be had very cheaply at garage sales. That last 426d was $25 at a gun show. It looked to have been lit but not actually cooked on. I picked up a couple accessories for mine. One is a propane adapter that slides in place of the generator tube. Another is an adapter to refill one pound cans from bulk tanks. Personally I prefer coleman fuel, but this gives me added versatility in a disaster situation.

those old leather plungers can be fixed if not used to much dry. I picked up a 3$ lantern at a flee market... i think all I had to do to get the leather plunger to work was add a bit of grease or olive oil. I can't exactly remember since I was black out drunk doing it about 8 years ago, but try to refurbish the old leather plungers since they do work well once moist / lubed.

I have been toying with the idea of taking the family camping. I have seen many a review on stoves and chefmate tends to win out for quicker boil times and the ability to use a bigger pan or skillet. Do you know much about these and if so is the difference negligible? thansk for any info. you can offer and thanks for the review on this stove.

At Walmart you can buy 4 cans of propane for just over 11dollars. Well now you can also buy a 5 or 7 gal propane and use a hose as well. Now if you want the best of it all your stove is not a duel fuel . Its a tri fuel yup .you can buy an adapter and bam you can use propane as well. A lot of people already have propane cylinders for there barbecue. Try using your gasoline fuel 10 years later good luck with that. But now then propane 10 years later is a whole different story. But just with the adapter you just have another choice of fuel.

What's the difference between gasoline and white gas, and why wouldn't the standard stove run on gasoline?
@johnbailey2034
@johnbailey2034 4 жыл бұрын
my area the Colman fuel is 13 bucks a gallon. Now the propane is 12 bucks and you get 4 bottles. Now then you can get a adapter to use a 30gal tank which now the fuel is a lot cheaper. But you can have the best of both worlds because you can use the adapter on the stove you have. So you have the best of every fuel for that stove.

I watched ur other video earlier today and it made me want to buy one of these... I stopped at a Goodwill and lo n behold... I found a Coleman 413H camping stove in pretty good condition. All the parts are there, the only thing is it looked like it has sat for some time and the fuel filling cap may not have been closed all the way. There is some dried up looking brown stuff (leakage) on the tank and a little inside where it was sitting. Gotta clean that up n see if it still works! I read a comment that said to use denatured alcohol and some gun cleaning brushes to clean the inside of the generator and the inside of the tank, if needed. I may use the denatured alcohol to clean the leakage stuff before lighting it up! I sub'd!

two things bother me about these newest models from Coleman one does the second burner valve pull out to escape the heat of the stove and the bright red colour of the tank which made this a Hallmark of Coleman recognise for 1000 yards is now a dark silver, too bad about that

Propane is very cheap if you refill your 1 lb cylinder using a 20lb propane tank. 1 gallon equals 4.5 lbs and 1 gallon is only about 3 bucks. Propane burns better than gasoline.

The stove can accommodate two 10 inch pots. You can go larger just keep in mind any thing bigger than 10 inches will limit the size pot you can use on the secondary burner. You want try and keep the burner centered under the pot or pan whenever possible for even cooking. Be Well Friend... InteliGear.

BTW, propane stoves suck compared to these dual fuelers, performance wise. Completely different flame. With the dual fuelers, you get the kind of flame you'd get out of a gas range in your kitchen. Propane come out all weird.
