Hi Dan, another great video as usual. I am a water hygiene engineer. from what I can see in the footage the pipe with the cable running down it looks like a newer installed sump of the two pipes and will probably have a pump connected within the well. Well water needs to be tested before any use especially if required to be potable to ensure no bacteria (E-coli, coliforms) are in the water as well as high chemical readings ( from fertilisers). A UV & filter system or reverse osmosis system can ensure you have bacteria-free water. Hope this helps.

Two things you can do that will make tent camping twice as nice … 1. Put a footprint, or small tarp, sized for your tent, underneath it (protects the tent floor) 2. String a strong rope between two trees and a few feet higher than the tent. Place a big tarp, 20 x 30 feet (or larger) over this rope and pull the sides out and tie them down well (or wind will have fun). This acts like a roof and gives you a nice, always dry area in front of your tent. I learned this doing field work in the Sierra mountains of California … it makes a world of difference!

Once you've got the well cleaned out and pumpable I would put a little shed with a lockable door to cover it and keep humans, animals and leaves out of the water. You could use one of those small premade storage sheds they sell at garden centers if they come large enough for the stone ring. Or make a heavy wooden lid for it. You will want to filter it also, and have some sort of sterilization process if you will be bathing or consuming it as you don't know what unfortunate critters may have been rotting in there all these years.

Pumping water such a long distant both length ways and upwards will be very inefficient in terms of power consumption. If you could afford it, you get ground based water tanks, collect water via the roof and pump it up to header tanks.
@ji8044
@ji8044 Жыл бұрын
@@magingi Yes, that would be the only way to get any kind of pressure at all. Without an elevated collection system, you could never even take a shower. The water would just dribble out.
@magingi
@magingi Жыл бұрын
@@ji8044 Well, yes. You'd get ample pressure with the small header tanks(plastic) somewhere near the roof, hidden from view. Some sort of gutters would collect rain from the roof and that would flow into large tanks at ground level. From the ground, that water would be pumped up to the header tanks when the header tanks volume was low which would trigger an electric pump in the ground water tanks via header tank tilt switch's or float valves to replenish them. Alternatively header tanks can be dispensed with if one uses a high pressure pump at ground level to pump water when ever taps are turned on, though I would suspect the former approach would be more efficient.

A few points. 1. There was most likely some sort of wooden covering for the well that rotted into non existence. You will need to replace this and have it properly sealed up to avoid any sort of rodents / animals falling into the well. 2. Speaking of animals, who knows how many carcasses have fallen into the well. There is no way I would use that water for anything until the whole well is pumped dry and cleaned. 3. Ideally, there must have been a sealed well somewhere on the property for drinking / showering water. That well you see there now must be for watering the garden and/or used in the laundry.

@caminojohn3240
@caminojohn3240 Жыл бұрын
@@theghost6412 Yes! That was also bouncing around the back of my head. I could not recall how it was used; however, it may also be a source of water for showers / cleaning, not for drinking. I can't imagine having dusty, bird poop flavored water coming off the roofs into a tank for me to drink. Then again, if you had a bunch of servants, perhaps after an hour or so of normal rain / runoff, then everything coming from the roofs was relatively clean, which can be used to fill the tank. I recall going to Hill of Tarvit in Scotland, and in the kitchen there were three taps, hot, cold, and rain water. Depending on what you were doing.

Dan, the cable going down the pipe into the well might be a resistor cable, they are widely used here in the north to keep any water pipes from freezing in sub-zero weather. They warm up the pipe just enough to keep it thawed.
@scottheaney5675

Perfect! you have options for 2 pumps. You have an in-line pump on the newer pipe. The wire going down to the well from that pump should be the safety shut off. Should the water in the well get to low. It shuts off power to not burn out the pump and get air in the pipe. Pull up the wire and see if there is a ball looking thing at the end. There should be another wire to power that pump. second option is buy about a 1 horsepower jet pump and pressure tank. Connect it to the old hose going down to the well. (You will need some water to prime the pump.) Connect a temporary hose to the other end of the jet pump (water going out) until your ready to use it either in the house or at the pool later if you use the other for the house. recommend a new pipe to the house from the pump and insulate exposed pipes/pump to prevent water freezing and cracking during cold months. You will need to clean the well and then cover it for safety. Hopefully you don't find a body. *cringe* Good Luck, be safe!

IMO it looks like the well is completely full of rotten leaves and branches, it needs a complete clearout before it can be used for anything. The pipes at the well don't look like lead and the ones at the château are a mix of galvanised (the one sticking out the wall) and copper (in the old bathrooms). Don't forget much of the plumbing was probably done in 1939 when lead was no longer that common and Mironnet probably had some more renovations done in the 60s or 70s.

That brass thing at the top of the newer pipe is a check valve to keep water from running back down the well when the pump is not running. The cable running down that pipe ran a submersible pump that is undoubtedly still there. This would have been part of a modern pressure supply system used in the 1980’s before the fire. The old small pipe, and the gravity tanks were original, and not likely to have been functional in the 1980’s. The outlet you show was powered from the nearby service entrance. The pump pressure switch was plugged into this outlet. Find the end of the well cable and test the wires with a simple electric meter. If it shows a few ohms, that is the pump motor winding. It shouldn’t be zero (shorted) or infinity (open). If the winding is good, apply power for a few seconds and listen for the motor and/or water. The pump could still be functional. Trace the pipes with a metal detector. Somewhere very near the well should have been a pressure tank. You can see the small tube at the top of the pipe that went to the pressure switch for the pump. The pipe from the well and to the house will be next to each other where the pressure tank was located. Dig down next to the well and follow the power cable and the pressure tube and the water pipe to find this location.

My brothers and sisters love to see pictures of our Dad. Your kids are going to treasure these videos forever. I was born 7 1/2 weeks premature. Both my mother and I were in the hospital a month. My Dad drove my sisters half way across Texas to stay with my grandmother. She was deaf. She saw my 2 and 3 year old sisters sitting on top of the wooden cover over her well. She had it concreted shut. If they had fallen in....... I buy two gallon buckets made of food grade plastic. I put them out for rain water. The lids seal tight. My mother's family harvested rain water. We took a bath out of a splash of water next to the wood store at my grandmother's.She watered all her garden, and animals from a rainwater cistern. They sell them in Texas. A windmill brings the well water to the surface. The cistern is raised for water pressure. A hand pump can bring water out of a well. Will look for KZbin videos. My great great great grandparents, and great great, great, and grandparents were self sufficient, without banks, or credit cards, with as many as 9 kids. They butchered their own meat, made their own butter, cheese, clothes, drapes, etc. No air-conditioning. Horses and wagons until the 1920s. One great-grandfather said, "Whoa!" to stop the Ford. It went through the back of the barn. (No Reins!)

As someone who camps A Lot I would suggest getting a section of Tyvek material to put under the tent or on the floor inside - helps keep moisture from seeping up. Also would suggest a cot from local sporting good store. Doesn’t deflate in the middle of the night and you can store under it. Exciting to see such progress!

The ground was very soft, never pushed tent pegs in by hand! Lots of good comments below about ground tarps and rainwater traps for a temporary fix. The walls of the Chateau May have stood since the fire, but they have been disturbed during renovation and may not be trustworthy to sleep under just yet. Keep up the good work Dan!

String a large tarp over the top of your tent as others have suggested to keep less rain from hitting your tent. This should give you more dry space around your tent area for chairs and stuff.

If you do put a tarp under the tent, make sure the edges are tucked under the sides of the tent a few inches to prevent the water running down the sides of the tent onto the tarp. Otherwise, you create a bathtub under the tent. The rainwater must drip onto ground not the tarp. I learned the hard way many years ago. A large tarp over but not touching the tent angled for runoff will keep the tent dry and protect it from the sun. Attach it to the trees. You will enjoy being outside under the stars. Keep up the great work. You might want to get the well tested. Have fun! I would definitely use new piping for well. You don't know what's in them. Get professional help.

I found years ago that buying huge swarthes of green shade house mesh and simply doubling it over several times makes amazing ground covers. Enough to be several layers thick and enough to cover a large area of space. Water and any dirt just falls straight through it and protect you on the dry top surface.

We've put in three wells in three different homes. We actually drilled the wells and one wa 350 ft deep. You might see if there's a well driller around who you could ask about your well and how deep you think it is. Don't go down in the well. There's two different ways you could do this without going in. You could get a heavy weight and put it in the well then measure how deep the rope goes downs. Or you can put the pump with the 3" thick water pipe (it's bendable) down into the water. When you hit bottom you pull it up a foot or two. When you put the pipe down with the pump, tape the electric wire on for the pump. Then when it's down you secure the pump. We always had a fitting that we could slip the pump onto to secure it. Then when you use electricty it should pump the water into a pressure tank. You're right you can't get enough pressure to get it to the top of the chateau. The pressure tank is usually electric so you have to wire it. There is a different kind of water pumps with the right current for using solar power. Those pumps use a different current than regular pumps. If this all sounds difficult it is. It's not a simple thing to stick a pump there on the surface and pump the water out.If you can find a mate that has experience, use him or find a well driller there in France. He might just put the pump in for you for not too much. The expensive part is the pump and the pipe.

Hi Dan, you need a trap under the tent, helps stop the cold rising that can give you a chill on the kidneys and you may end up with an infection in them. Also one of those silver emergency sheets under the mattress will also help. I would also put a small trench around it to help divert the water when it rains heavily. Love watch your videos 😊

Nice. I think if I was going to be staying in a tent for a significant length of time I would probably build a little wooden deck, so it was nice and level and water could run under it instead of the tent sitting on the wet ground. But probably not worth it if it’s only a few weeks.

When I look back at these Dan it is marvelous how you made your ruins look so beautiful in your filming. This also reminds me of when we built our house and as movers not arriving for a few days, our children wanted to sleep there in the bare house(no furniture or anything) just because of the thrill of a just finished house. I love to look back to remind myself just how far you have come in this journey. I also enjoy the wonderful forest (future plan) evaluation that Nick had done back then...it was just amazing to feel what it must be like in that forest and what can be dreamed and manifested.

Dan, you could do what my sister did for a temporary water supply on her rural property for their tent stays. They constructed a small pitched gable iron roof on posts and ran guttering to a small raised water tank. It was enough to supply fresh water for their stays. You’d probably need extra water for drinking unless you have a filter attached, but should be okay for cooking and washing. You could fill the tank at the start and rainfall could top it up.

That well looks like it will do the job, but get some plywood cover over it to keep anything or anyone falling in! Might just save some lives! You will need help to clean out all the debris that has fallen in over the years. It looks like a submersible pump, but all that kit will need to be replaced after sitting all that time. You can set up a tripod over the well to use to both pull the pump and elevating a bucket to use to remove all the muck. Need some one on top and someone on the bottom, your electric winch will be useful. Pump out all the water with a good sized sump pump, then you can work. I use a chain ladder to allow me to enter and exit the well. Keep the sump pump there to stay ahead of the water. It's a stone casement so once it's cleaned out, it will last as long as the water table keeps up. At one time in the past, there were people that did well digging and such work. Today most well drillers only drill new and set up their own way.

Hey Dan, You could use the tarp that you had on the roof of the chateau to place above the tent (Wherever you decide to put it). You could place one of the old metal beams that you have replaced or a cut down tree , up in the trees and throw the tarp over it. It will channel away heavy showers, keep the ground dry around the area of the tent and also could keep the tent cool by creating shade. A simple and cheap, temporary idea for a bit of added comfort. Love the channel , thanks.

Build a temp gatehouse, which you move into, then a proper gatehouse later on, (you could rent out to earn money back till you decide to hire a groundskeeper family to help out!) That way you should be able to get water and electrics first to that from the street up and across. If you sort out decent on sight living with that setup you will be much better off in time rich terms.

Some deep thoughts on the water works: Obviously you’ll need a reliable long-term water source for the Chateau. You’ll want to test or have tested the well’s recharge rate. As others have commented, first have the water tested for toxins and replace the old pipes whether they’re leaded or not. Better to find out if the well is still viable before throwing time and money into refitting it and getting it back in working order. Or you could just make a wish and throw three coins in the well, then hope for the best.

Dan, put an extra rain tarp over your tent to keep the Raine out. I would have put an extra tarp underneath too, it helps keep the moisture out. Don't let your stuff touch the sides of the tent, it will wick moisture onto your bedding and things. Just FYI from a person that has done a lot of camping. One last helpful hint, if it's cold outside, put a sleeping bag or thick blanket on top of your air mattress, otherwise cold air radiates up through the air mattress. Even if it's hot outside an extra layer between you and the plastic mattresses will help you to not get all sweaty at night. Follow for more camping tips. 😂
