*FYI-------Just on the News tonight, the NM State Park there, Hyde memorial, has just closed all outdoor structures due to the tussock caterpillar/moth invasion. Warning again that people and pets are reporting injury from contact with them! They said that the invasion is expected to last another 2 weeks or so. *

I came in contact with one at a park 4 yrs ago and suffered for 10 days with rash, pain, itching. I couldn't believe the misery it caused on my arm. It came across a picnic table I was at and brushed my arm and I didn't see it till too late.

You are welcome! That is why I did the video. Our dog acted like he didn't feel well for 2 days after we got back and we have no idea if it was these guys or something else. Hopefully they will be out of the caterpillar stage in next week or so and then not as dangerous for humans and pets. Unfortunately, the moth stage is the one that is deadly to the trees and I am hearing about brown trees in spots in the Sandia mountains already.

Just a note: These caterpillars cocoon and become the Tussock Moth. The MOTH is the thing that is damaging to the trees. They eat the needles from the trees, and make them vulnerable to disease and bark beetle attacks. So while we were there, we only had the caterpillars. Hopefully, this situation will be gone in next few weeks but I don't know....

I tried to pet one when I was 5 years old and my little finger hurt so bad ! Also my family camped at that camp ground north of Santa Fe about 1961. There was a sever rain storm in the night and we were stuck until a bull dozer came to push the debris away in the morning so all the campers could get out. At that time there wasn’t any kind of amenities such as I see in your video like the rock wall or camp fire stoves etc.
